Integrated and Hybrid Print Solutions:
Using High-speed Monochrome Digital Presses - Segment 2
Today’s high-speed monochrome digital presses have much to offer commercial and in-plant print providers as they address the changing demands of their markets. High speed digital presses have made significant inroads in the printing market and have brought about changes in print customer expectations that are redefining today’s marketplace.

Numerous digital printing systems are available in the high-speed monochrome category, from companies such as Xerox, Nipson, Canon, Océ, InfoPrint (IBM+Ricoh), Delphax Technologies, and others.
However, in terms of high-end productivity and versatility, the product offerings from Nipson stand out for the powerful functionality they provide to print providers.
Nipson entered into the high speed monochrome digital printer business via development of a unique imaging technology called magnetography. Unlike most competing products, which use electrophotography with its delicate photosensitive imaging drum, a magnetographic print drum has a hard metal surface that provides exceptionally long life and the ability to handle a wide range of print media, including affixed plastic cards and labels. This rugged reliability combined with magnetography’s penchant for high speed operation allowed Nipson to concentrate on high speed applications and capture a major market share in the high end of the speed range.
Nipson’s success in the high speed monochrome digital press market comes not only from the use of magnetography, but from combining this outstanding imaging technology with other features in products specifically implemented to address the needs of today’s market. These features include flash fusing, variable speed control, and web systems that match the production environment in which they are working. In addition, Nipson’s toner is magnetic, so users can print security documents using MICR fonts without having to stock and use special toners.
Nipson has developed two distinct product families in the high-speed monochromatic digital press market – the DIGIFlex line and the VaryPRESS line.
The two product families share many traits, including the following:

The DIGIFlex product is a compact unit that can produce up to 600+ pages per minute of simplex output. It is a “slack web” system, meaning that it controls the movement of the paper through the printer. The DIGIFlex can be used as a stand-alone printer using fanfold stock or integrated with pre- and post-processing equipment to form a complete printing solution.
The VaryPRESS digital press can print over 1,070 simplex pages per minute. While it can be run in a stand-alone configuration, it is specifically designed to be able to operate in-line with traditional printing presses, combining variable data printing capabilities with the high quality color and productivity capabilities of the offset press. The VaryPRESS is a “tight-web” system (like offset presses) and prints in sync with the offset press, ensuring accurate print placement. Thus, output can be produced in one pass, with the VaryPRESS adding variable information and the offset press printing the color images on the web, resulting in significant savings over multi-step manufacturing scenarios.
Part three of this series continues a look at integrated and hybrid print solutions using high-speed monochrome digital presses, and it considers the two classes of print solutions.
