1.5 Times Brighter Than a Xenon Lamp With One-Third of
Power
Singapore, September
21, 2011
– A color scanner using a white light-emitting diode (LED)
light
source developed by Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. and Fuji Xerox Advanced Technology
Co., Ltd., its affiliate company, received the Lighting Technology Award 2011
from the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan. The award ceremony was
held on September 15.
The companies
incorporate the white LEDs as the light source for the scanner units in their
digital color multifunction devices. Having overcome LEDs’ non-uniform
brightness and color variance, Fuji Xerox’s LED scanner has achieved the
brightness 1.5 times greater than that of a xenon lamp at approximately
one-third power consumption. The technology was highly rated for offering
enhanced energy efficiency, convenience and productivity compared to former
models.
White LED light
source technology
In recent years,
digital multifunction devices have been required to scan documents faster to
enhance office work productivity. Higher scanning speed needs higher
illuminance at the light source, however, while less power consumption is also
required.
To overcome this
challenge, Fuji Xerox and Fuji Xerox Advanced Technology decided to adopt white
LEDs, which require less power than xenon lamps, as the light source. Although
LEDs were considered to be difficult to use for this purpose because of their
non-uniform brightness and color variance, the companies succeeded in achieving
1.5 times the brightness of a xenon lamp at one-third the power consumption while
maintaining consistent scan image quality, by developing an optical component
that achieves a uniform light dispersion, as well as an image processing
technology that automatically performs digital color correction.
Lighting Technology
Award
The Lighting
Technology Award commends excellent achievements expected to greatly contribute
to the society including; development of light sources, fixtures and control
systems with exceptional functions, performances and energy-saving performance,
outstanding improvements to current methods, and unique ingenuity of designs or
manufacturing methods.

Introduction of the
LED Scanners to Products
Fuji Xerox first
introduced this award-winning color scanner to the eight models four models of
ApeosPort-IV series multifunction device as well as four models of
DocuCentre-IV series released in August 2009. Since then, the company has been
incorporating the scanner into flagship models including a full-color digital
multifunction device, ApeosPort-IV C2260 released in December 2009, and
monochrome digital multifunction devices, DocuCentre-IV 3060/2060 released in July
2011.
