Océ VarioPrint Systems Help UK's Largest Independent Academic Book Manufacturer Gain 300% More Capacity for Short-run Book Publishing
MPG Books deal adds to Océ's 65 percent market share in UK digital book printing market
Trumbull, CT – June 17, 2010 – Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, announced that the Océ VarioPrint® 6000 line continues to gain ground in short run publishing with an agreement between Océ and MPG Books for Océ VarioPrint 6320 systems. MPG Books is the UK's largest independent academic book manufacturer. The deal will give MPG Books 300 percent more capacity to take advantage of rampant growth in short-run and on-demand book printing. In addition, the company will achieve a significant reduction in total electricity costs because of the environmental advantages of the Océ systems.
MPG is adding two Océ VarioPrint 6320 systems to their book manufacturing capacity. The first was installed in the week leading up to Ipex, the international printing conference, while the second shipped directly from the conference to MPG headquarters in Cornwall, England. Each system will have MBO folders to optimize the productivity of the digital presses and allow the company to produce notched books that have the same look and feel as litho production.
Huge increase in capacity to cope with explosion in short-run printing
"We have signed major agreements to produce books that fall into the 1-99 book run category. This latest investment on top of £5million we have already spent over the last two years is part of our drive to offer the complete lifecycle of the product and will provide the capacity to cope with an explosion in terms of short-run book production, particularly the 1-99 run lengths. The Océ VarioPrint 6320 systems will provide us with a 300 percent increase in capacity, and the quality of books produced has been unbelievable," said MPG Books Managing Director Tony Chard.
"The reason we chose Océ is because it is the clear market leader with the highest quality and most productive systems for digital book printing, as well as the best total cost of ownership. Added to that, we will have up to a 40 percent in our total electricity costs due to the environmental benefits that include substantially lower temperature levels for the systems."
Back-up role will bring extra benefits to MPG Books Group
Océ already has 65 percent market share in the UK digital book printing market. MPG Books, Océ's latest customer, is part of MPG Books Group, which offers the complete range of book manufacturing services from print on demand to long run sheet fed. Another role for the new presses, which will also have Océ PRISMA® software and MBO inline folders, is to provide back-up for the MPG Biddles site at Kings Lynn in Norfolk, which last year invested in an Océ VarioStream® 9210 continuous feed system to expand digital short-run capacity.
Book printers increasingly recognize the benefits of digital technology
Craig Nethercott, Océ UK's Director of Production Printing, said: "MPG Books has made a significant investment in our digital technology in the full knowledge that new markets are opening up in short-run book printing, particularly the 1-99 run length category. We are sensing an increasing mood of optimism among book printers who are increasingly recognizing the benefits of digital technology. Investing in digital is an important route for printers to grow their business in what are still challenging times for everybody."
