CAP Ventures Announces Estimates for 2001 Western
European Printer Market
(Norwell, MA) October 28, 2002...According to findings from the
CAP Ventures' Digital Peripheral Solutions Consulting Service
Europe, the 2001printer market in Western Europe declined to 22.39
million units, an 8.8% decline compared to 2000. CAP Ventures'
research reveals that the total market for all printer-based
multifunction products (MFPs) soared by 50% in Europe to 1.49 million
units. Placements of single function printers fell by approximately
11.3% to 20.89 million units in 2001 from 23.55 million in 2000.
2001 saw an unexpected decline in placements of inkjet printers as
the market fell by 9% from 19.26 million units in 2000 to 17.54
million units in 2001. The primary factor in this decline was a
corresponding reduction in the sale of personal computers in Western
Europe.
Despite the decline in inkjet printers, two areas that saw
significant growth in 2001 were mono workgroup page printers and all
colour page printers. Mono workgroup page printers (between 13 and 39
pages per minute) experienced growth of around 47% in 2001 to 1.38
million units in contrast to the personal environment (0 to 12ppm),
which saw placements decline by over 20% to just 2.64 million units.
This confirms the changing trend in the workplace where single,
higher speed laser printers are replacing several slower
printers.
The colour page printer market in Western Europe grew by 12% to
just under 230,000 units in 2001. However, several new product
introductions by vendors this year, especially single-pass higher
speed workgroup colour page printers, will ensure that growth in this
market continues. Cap Ventures expects to see the colour page printer
market grow at the expense of mono page printers, as the cost of
colour devices declines and the cost per page for using a colour
printer to print in mono falls in line with current mono-only
devices.
