February Graphic Arts Monthly Is Printed on KODAK NEXPRESS S3000 Digital Production Color Press
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Feb. 12—The photo on the cover of the February issue of Graphic Arts Monthly (GAM) looks so real, you want to reach out and touch it. When you do, it just might surprise you. The editors of GAM, one of the graphic communications industry’s leading trade publications, selected the KODAK NEXPRESS S3000 Digital Production Color Press to print the magazine’s February 2008 cover, which includes extensive coverage of the major digital printing trade show, AIIM/On Demand.
The GAM issue features a striking photograph of an apricot on the cover, requiring a shade of orange that can be difficult for digital presses to reproduce. The NEXPRESS S3000 Press has a larger color gamut than traditional offset-based SWOP specifications, so this vibrant orange color was easily and accurately printed. A custom URL, www.graphics.kodak.com/gam, was set up especially for GAM readers.
Kodak used the five-color configuration and the fifth imaging unit for the 70,000 GAM print run, making it possible to use Kodak’s intelligent coating solution, which adds a protective coating of KODAK NEXPRESS Clear Dry Ink. This is particularly important for a magazine in wide distribution, as the coating helps reduce damage caused by finishing and bulk mailing equipment. To enhance the photo, Kodak used the intelligent coating process to create a “fuzz” effect on the apricot, adding extra depth that readers can feel.
“A real-world demonstration of the extended color gamut possible on digital presses is of value to our readers,” said Bill Esler, the magazine’s Chief Editor.
The KODAK NEXPRESS S3000 Digital Production Color Press is the most productive digital color printing solution offered by Kodak, delivering 3000 A3/tabloid 4/0 sheets per hour (100 pages per minute) on a very wide range of substrates. The S3000 delivers unsurpassed cut sheet productivity with offset-class image quality. A fully modular design makes it field upgradeable for increased paper input or delivery capacity—or to add a fifth imaging unit. The NEXPRESS S3000 Press is ideal for print service providers who want to take digital printing to the next level and maximize their bottom line.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase the KODAK NEXPRESS S3000 Digital Press by printing GAM’s cover,” said Kevin Joyce, Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. “The February issue of GAM demonstrates the NEXPRESS S3000 Press’s strength in its color gamut, its in-line coating capabilities and its impressive speed.”
The cover is printed on NEWPAGE STERLING ULTRA 100-lb. gloss text, a sheet that contains 10 percent post-consumer fibers. This paper is certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council. All KODAK NEXPRESS Dry Inks are non-hazardous, and printed sheets are easily de-inked for recycling. Subscribers will receive the February 2008 issue during the week of Feb. 12.
