Ipex Champions Open Most Important Ipex Ever

Ipex 2010 got off to a notable start, following a high profile opening ceremony which saw the print community celebrating the inspiring work of the Ipex ’Champions in Print’.

Members of the Ipex Advisory Committee as well as other Ipex exhibitors, the media and visitors watched industry visionaries Benny Landa, Professor Frank Romano; Lord Bob Gavron, John Crosfield and Mike Gordon (RR Donnelley) being officially honoured during the ceremony and receiving an award in recognition of their pioneering work which has shaped the modern print industry. Representatives of Adobe and Kodak collected the awards on behalf of Dr. John Warnock & Dr. Charles Geschke as well as Dan Gelbart. Remaining Ipex Champions JK Rowling will be presented with the award after the show.

In their speeches, both Trevor Crawford, Ipex 2010 Event Director and George Clarke, Ipex 2010 President & Heidelberg UK MD & thanked the industry for their continuous support and commitment since Ipex 2006. The event is set to impress visitors from over 150 countries with over 1,000 exhibiting companies, demonstrating the latest technological advancements, providing printers with a real insight into the future of their businesses.

Says Trevor,” We’re delighted to have the Ipex Champions opening the event. Ipex has always had a reputation for being more than an exhibition. Yes, first and foremost it is a business show but it is also a showcase for all that is great about our industry. For that reason, two years ago we launched the ‘Champions In Print’ initiative to honour a group of people who have made a significant contribution to the development of the printing industry.”

Digital Print Pioneer and first ever Ipex Champion Benny Landa spoke on behalf of all the Ipex Champions, re-iterating the important role print continues to play in today’s communications landscape.

Says Benny Landa: “It’s a great honour to be speaking on behalf of all Ipex Champions whose creativity and commitment have shaped all areas of our continuously evolving industry. It is especially thrilling for me to return to Ipex, since, after all, it was at Ipex seventeen years ago that Indigo first made its debut. I am fascinated to see how Ipex continues to be a watershed event for entrepreneurs, product developers and visionaries, giving them – and their future customers - an unrivalled opportunity to meet and exchange insights."

For the next eight days, the NEC in Birmingham will welcome tens of thousands of visitors to Ipex from the UK and all over the world aiming to make investment decisions and keep abreast of fast-changing technology. To assist visitors, the Ipex organisers have introduced a raft of new features, including the Printers’ Profit Zone (Hall 9, Stand 9F333), The Great Print Debates (Hall 9, Stand 9F333) and the Knowledge Centre (Hall 11, Stand 11F230) to help print providers understand new market dynamics and the opportunities they represent.

Xerox Demonstrates Innovative Production Inkjet Technology, Precisely Controlling Two Billion Ink Drops Every Second

Patented ink technology delivers vivid image quality on low cost, plain papers

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. – Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) will highlight the power of “supercharged” continuous feed production at IPEX 2010, this year’s largest print industry trade show, with a preview of its high speed production inkjet technology.

Driving the inkjet device are 56 durable piezo-electric, drop-on-demand print heads with more than 49,000 nozzles jetting nearly two billion ink drops per second. Each drop hits the paper with precise pixel placement as the printer produces more than 2,000 color images per minute. This technology is designed to produce high impact color on low cost papers with close-loop controls to deliver exceptional reliability and performance needed in production printing environments.

“Xerox has long been recognized as a leader in toner-based technologies for graphic communications, and now it is investing in applying its significant cache of inkjet technologies and intellectual property to meet the needs of production users,” said Jim Hamilton, group director, InfoTrends’ Production Hardware Consulting Services.

Vivid image quality on low cost papers
The technology can produce up to 500 feet, or 152.4 meters, per minute – on lighter weight papers, saving print providers money and conserving an estimated 2,000 trees per year.

Xerox production inkjet technology delivers vivid image quality on low cost, untreated papers without any special coatings or bonding agents. This is enabled by high-speed, ground-breaking capabilities that include a sensor to precisely control every inkjet nozzle on the fly, automatically compensating for any jets that misfire.

“This digital production technology is a marvel of research and engineering, and an example of how our unique differentiated ink technology can address the needs of production customers,” said Sophie Vandebroek, Xerox’s chief technology officer and president of the Xerox Innovation Group.

Innovations inside
The technology features innovations based on more than 2,000 patents developed by researchers and scientists inside Xerox labs in Wilsonville, Ore., Toronto and Webster, N.Y. The innovations include:

  • Robust print head design – A proven technology, Xerox has manufactured more than one million print heads to date. The stainless steel print head is about the size of two decks of cards yet contains 880 microscopic nozzles – each half the width of a human hair. The print head design allows for a modular approach to achieve full-width printing – up to a maximum of 20.5". The 56 print heads are stitched together to achieve high speed, four color, 600 dpi prints.
  • New Image On Web Array (IOWA) sensor – At the core of Xerox’s unique technology is the sensor that scans the billions of droplets per second to ensure they appear exactly where they need to be. An intelligent scan bar registers each print head and automatically adjusts alignment when necessary. Unlike competitive inkjet systems that slow production by requiring operator maintenance, the IOWA sensor can detect when a page is missing the appropriate amount of color, and autocorrects to maintain color uniformity without interrupting the print job.
  • Production inks – The technology uses a patented, granulated, resin-based formulation that does not soak through the paper, ensuring crisp image quality on low cost, untreated and uncoated plain papers. Aqueous or water-based inks often suffer from bleed-through and dull color issues, which usually require more expensive and specially-treated papers. The formulation of the ink also enables document de-inking, difficult to achieve with other inks. Xerox’s production inkjet technology is the only one without applying costly pre-coating materials to the paper to receive the highest de-inkability rating - “Good” - from INGEDE, a group of leading European paper manufacturers representing the International Association of the Deinking Industry.

The Xerox production inkjet technology demonstration will take place in the Xerox stand at IPEX 2010, Hall 7, May 18-25 in Birmingham, U.K.

The KODAK PROSPER S10 Imprinting System, the first product to implement KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology, was launched in June 2009 as a monochrome imprinting system for delivering offset class variable data applications produced inline with web offset presses and finishing equipment at up to 1,000 fpm/305 mpm. The PROSPER S10 Imprinting System, with flexible mounting options, integrates seamlessly with web offset presses and web finishing lines using a variety of third-party printing towers to add variable data to offset printed materials at a resolution of 600 dpi.

Adphos, GSS, Matti Technology AG, Intro International GmbH, and i-Web (Integrated Web Finishing Systems) have been selected as the first authorized integrators for the PROSPER S-Series System inkjet technology. “Adphos and GSS have partnered with Kodak for more than ten years in providing inkjet integrations, and we were honored to develop the Adphos/GSS TDC for the PROSPER S-Series inkjet technology,” said Niels Frederiksen, President of Adphos North America.

John Sillies, Executive Vice President of GSS added, “The TDC development program has allowed GSS to utilize our web handling and engineering expertise, coupled with Adphos’ inkjet drying experience, to develop a product that meets the stringent requirements of registration, tension control, and drying of process color inkjet at 1,000 fpm/305 mpm.”

With a print width of 4.16 inches/10.56 cm. and pigment-based process color inks that offer fade, scratch, and water resistance, the PROPSPER S10 System increases throughput and eliminates the need for additional standalone equipment.

“The changing nature of print and communications means that service providers must adapt to meet the needs of their customers, offering a variety of solutions that are best suited to address the individual demands of each project,” added Cohen. “The PROSPER S-Series Imprinting Systems provide an ideal bridge between digital and offset for hybrid applications.”

Kodak Expands KODAK FLEXCEL Product Family, Delivering Award-Winning Technology for Diverse Flexo Applications

BIRMINGHAM, UK, May 18 – Kodak is expanding the range of its flexo solutions, adding the KODAK FLEXCEL NX Wide System, the KODAK FLEXCEL Direct System and the KODAK FLEXCEL SRX System. These additions join the award-winning KODAK FLEXCEL NX Digital Flexographic System in Kodak’s flexographic product line to address different needs in the very diverse package printing market.

The FLEXCEL NX Wide System will support plates with sizes up to 42 by 60 inches, appealing to printers and trade houses working in larger formats. The FLEXCEL Direct System, which includes imager, media and workflow, features innovative new technology for the direct laser engraving of flexo forms. And, providing an affordable entry point into the benefits of Kodak’s proven flat top dot technology, the new FLEXCEL SRX System offers the print stability and robustness of a conventional flexo plate with the tonal reproduction afforded by a digital system.

“The introduction of these new products demonstrates Kodak’s ongoing commitment to the development of the FLEXCEL Product family, and to supporting the flexographic packaging industry,” said Oscar Planas, Vice President Marketing, Prepress Solutions, Kodak. “These new KODAK Solutions are designed to deliver high-quality results and increase production efficiencies across a wide range of packaging applications, enabling package printers, converters and trade shops to cost effectively take on diverse jobs and build their businesses.”

The FLEXCEL NX Wide System delivers all the features and benefits of the current FLEXCEL NX Digital Flexographic System in a larger format, allowing printers and trade houses to produce a wider range of package sizes or increase efficiency though the ability to optimize job layout on one plate. The FLEXCEL NX System, including the new FLEXCEL NX Wide System, dramatically increases the quality and efficiency of flexographic printing, for applications including tags and labels, folding cartons, and flexible packages, while also offering improved productivity and predictability on press.

The FLEXCEL Direct System is an elastomer direct engraving solution ideally suited for imaging in-the-round forms that also delivers an affordable, high-quality solution for seamed or seamless sleeves. Kodak Announces Comprehensive Paper Strategy for KODAK PROSPER Press Platform

BIRMINGHAM, UK, May 18 – Today at Ipex, Kodak announced its comprehensive paper strategy for the KODAK PROSPER Press Platform. The strategy encompasses development programs with world-leading paper mills to produce paper optimized for inkjet printing; an in-line paper pre-treatment module for the PROSPER Press to allow the use of offset and existing inkjet paper stocks; and a paper certification program to help printers confidently and reliably select appropriate paper stocks for various applications.

“The PROSPER Press Platform is a breakthrough technology, bringing previously unattainable levels of quality, productivity and total cost of ownership to the digital print market,” said Kevin Joyce, Worldwide Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Digital Printing Solutions, Kodak. “The next step in driving value for print service providers and their customers is this comprehensive paper strategy, which delivers the widest choice and range of substrates to accommodate the needs of the commercial printing, book manufacturing, direct mail, and catalog markets. Taken together, all the parts of the strategy deliver substrate flexibility, maximum productivity and offset class quality.”

The comprehensive paper strategy for the PROSPER Press Platform will help printers choose the right paper for their specific application with a paper certification program, and provides the option to purchase paper optimized for inkjet printing from a paper mill or pre-treating paper in-house using the PROSPER In-line Optimization Station, depending on the customer’s business model and operational requirements.

    PROSPER Press paper development
To best meet the needs of high-volume printers, Kodak is working with 10 major paper companies worldwide to develop and produce new papers optimized for KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology. With assistance from Kodak, the companies are developing a range of coated and uncoated papers typically used for book manufacturing, direct mail and catalog and magazine printing markets.

“This commitment of resources demonstrates the high level of confidence these paper companies have in the future of Kodak’s revolutionary Stream Inkjet Technology and the PROSPER Press Platform,” Joyce said. “By working collaboratively with these paper mills, Kodak is ensuring a market-driven development process in which paper, inks, hardware and software have all been optimized to produce the best possible production and image quality results.”

The paper companies working with Kodak on optimized paper development are:

  • Appleton Coated, Kimberly, WI
  • International Paper, Memphis, TN
  • Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd., Tokyo
  • NewPage, Miamisburg, OH
  • Nippon Paper Group, Inc., Tokyo
  • North Pacific Paper Corp., Longview, WA
  • Sappi Fine Paper North America, Boston
  • StoraEnso, Helsinki, Finland
  • Verso Paper Corp., Memphis, TN
  • Ziegler Papier, Grellingen, Switzerland

“At Kodak, we’ve led the development of almost all transactional papers used across the inkjet printing industry today, and have an unrivaled breadth of experience in image science and print technologies,” said Don Burns, Business Development Director Media, Kodak. “We chose these paper companies because they are best-in-class for paper technology, manufacturing, logistics, and application know-how in addition to their continued commitment to our target markets.”

Beyond the mills participating in the paper development program, Kodak has a number of long-time paper company relationships including Holland-based Crown Van Gelder (CVG); Enterprise Group, a division of Domtar Corp. of Montreal; Glatfelter of York, PA; International Paper; Memphis, TN and Brussels, Belgium; Kishu Paper of Tokyo; Oji Paper of Tokyo; and Ziegler Papier of Grellingen, Switzerland that produce papers already well suited for the PROSPER Press Platform. The manufacturing history of production inkjet paper grades goes back almost 20 years with some of these firms and even longer for hybrid printing applications.

    PROSPER In-line Optimization Station
For those printers who require an almost unlimited portfolio of papers, Kodak is developing the PROSPER In-line Optimization Station, a pre-treatment module as an addition to the PROSPER Press Platform. This technology will enable the optimization of almost any standard paper and is designed to provide a robust and flexible option to printers of short-run jobs with variable paper requirements and specifications. The In-line Optimization Station, which will be available commercially in early 2011, can be integrated into the PROSPER Press or, alternatively, can be operated independently as a near-line coating module.

Kodak’s In-line Optimization Station is designed to deliver optimal image quality and consistent operation, allow the widest possible choice of substrate and maintain high levels of speed and productivity. The pre-treatment process optimizes existing paper designs to create an appropriate surface for the physical requirements of inkjet printing, including aqueous pigment based inks, evaporative drying, ink adhesion and gloss, without affecting other paper properties.

After investigating a wide range of application methods, including inkjet deposition and spray coating, Kodak developed a roll coating method that achieves a consistent application of pre-treatment fluid accurately and reliably. The water-based pre-treatment fluids contain adhesion-promoting additives that can be customized depending on the specific paper stock being treated. The system provides paper flexibility, allowing for the pre-treatment of virtually any paper surface, whether coated or uncoated, and from matte to silk to glossy finishes. It ensures high quality print by delivering consistent coverage of pre-treatment fluid across the entire web, as well as ease of use and excellent performance on press.

“The In-line Optimization Station provides an efficient solution allowing printers to use the widest possible range of standard offset and commercially available inkjet papers,” said Anir Dutta, Inkjet Printing Systems Product Manager, Kodak. “The option to optimize a wide variety of paper stocks provides our customers with substrate flexibility allowing them to maximize productivity and achieve optimal image quality.”

    Paper certification program
Kodak will further build on its long-standing paper expertise by expanding its testing program to include a robust paper certification program to assist PROSPER Press Platform customers in paper selection. On a one-to-four-diamond rating scale, the program will evaluate paper based on image quality using the major recognized metrics of optical density, strikethrough, raggedness, color-to-color bleed and mottle, allowing customers to choose the paper best suited to their projects and performance expectations. The paper certification program will provide customers with the assurance that tested papers will perform as rated for specific applications.

“With more than 4,000 paper tests completed and a decade of experience co-designing papers for various print engines, Kodak is well positioned to develop a transparent, industry-leading paper certification program,” Burns said. “The certification program will help our customers make the best choices among the many paper stocks available, helping to simplify logistics and supply chain management, and allowing them to efficiently provide high-quality service and reliable results. With so many possible combinations of paper, and the various types of inkjet technologies and ink formulations, a clear measurement of image quality and expected print performance will prove invaluable for PROSPER Press customers and their clients.”

For more information about Kodak’s current paper selection guides, visit: www.graphics.kodak.com/substratesolutions.

“Along with the launch of the color KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press at Ipex, this comprehensive paper strategy for the PROSPER Press Platform marks a critical step in demonstrating the full potential of offset class digital inkjet printing,” Joyce said. “It will allow all of our PROSPER Press customers—commercial printers, book printers, direct mail, catalog and magazine printers, and other print managers—to consistently and efficiently choose the right paper for their specific application and get the quality results they expect.”

Xerox Honors Digital Printing Excellence at IPEX 2010

BIRMINGHAM, U.K., May 18, 2010 – At this year’s largest print industry trade show, IPEX 2010, Xerox Corporation’s (NYSE: XRX) customers from around the world are touting the benefits of digital printing with applications that resulted in triple-digit response rates for their clients and increased leads and profits for their businesses.

“At Xerox, our strategy is always to make it easy for print service providers to drive revenue through the power of digital printing,” said Tracy Yelencsics, vice president, Production Products and Programs, Xerox Corporation. “Our customers are using technology and software to transform their clients’ challenges into opportunities that pay off – and that’s a winning combination in today’s marketplace.”

Xerox’s Best-of-the-Best contest honored digital printing applications produced by members of the Xerox Premier Partners Global Network. Applications from more than 17 countries were judged on image quality, business results and the use of Xerox technology in the following categories: books, collateral, digital and offset, direct marketing, photo publishing, and transpromo. Three winners were honored in each category.

This year’s winning print providers, in alphabetical order, are: Cathedral Corporation; ColorCentric Corporation; ColorFast, S.A. de C.V.; De Budelse b.v.; dsicmm Group Limited; DMM, Inc.; Global Diseña; Keiger Direct; LaserTryk.dk; Lateral Group; MBA Group Ltd; medialogik GmbH; Pondres; Progressive Communications; TeleMail; TOCHO Co, Ltd; and Wuhan Caifeng Digital Image Express Printing Co. Ltd.

A sampling of the winners includes:

  • U.K.-based Lateral Group, an integrated communications management company, produced a campaign for the British government's Change4Life campaign, which is aimed at raising obesity awareness. The integrated campaign demanded a complex and robust mix of data and technology. The direct-mail pieces included more than four million variable-data points and were printed on a Xerox iGen3™ 110 Digital Production Press using software from XMPie®, a Xerox company. The resulting campaign generated 200 percent more registrations than expected. Lateral Group has engaged in similar campaigns for a harmful drinking awareness program for a global pharmaceutical and consumer goods company.
  • MBA Group created the world’s first 100 percent variable publication that integrated personalized content on select pages throughout the magazine, generating 256 percent more leads for advertisers. The U.K.-based company produced the magazine, with a circulation of 12,000, on a Xerox 980 Color Continuous Feed Printing System using XMPie software.
  • Mexico-based commercial print provider ColorFast created a promotional calendar to highlight its capabilities to customers and prospects. Printed on the Xerox 700 Digital Color Press, it helped the company improve sales by 60 percent over the previous year.
  • LaserTryk took advantage of the printing quality of the Xerox 1300™ Continuous Feed Printing System, Xerox Nuvera® 200 EA Perfecting Production System and Xerox iGen3 110 press to produce offset-quality, short-run black-and-white books on demand.

The Denmark-based company captured sales with publishers who wanted the look of traditional offset without the hassle of extra stock and warehousing costs. The fleet of Xerox solutions offers LaserTryk significant flexibility – using the iGen3 press for short-run color covers, and the black-and-white systems for high-quality pages inside.

    Xerox at IPEX
Xerox’s stand in Hall 7 features 18 pieces of technology, including a demo of Xerox’s production inkjet technology and the Xerox Color 800/1000 Presses. GMG to Demonstrate Digital Printing Solutions with HP at Ipex

Tuebingen/Birmingham (17.05.2010) - GMG, the world's leading color management solutions provider, is pleased to announce that it will present solutions with HP for the commercial and wide-format printing segments at the HP stand AB150 in hall 12 at Ipex 2010.

"We feel confident that GMG and HP customers will be pleased with the high color accuracy and repeatability of consistent color results which can be achieved in digital printing with GMG's highly innovative color management solutions," says Paul Willems, CEO of GMG GmbH & Co. KG.

The solutions include ColorServer for color conversions and SmartProfiler for calibrating and profiling different output devices, such as HP Indigo digital presses or HP Scitex industrial large-format printers. GMG and HP are therefore expanding their long-standing relationship in the field of high-end contract proofing, where the GMG ColorProof proofing software has been supporting the HP Designjet Z-Series wide-format printers from the outset.

The combination of GMG SmartProfiler and GMG ColorSever helps users of HP digital presses and wide-format printers easily meet their customers' increasing expectations for high color accuracy, repeatability and colors that match those of print media produced by conventional offset printing processes. The solutions also benefit companies that have several similar or identical output devices installed. In these cases, distributed color management on each front-end results in different color rendering on the individual printing systems. With centrally controlled color management using GMG SmartProfiler and GMG ColorServer, companies can greatly increase productivity, improve production reliability and achieve identical quality of printed output.

"GMG SmartProfiler and GMG ColorServer enable us to easily create color profiles and calibrations for different output devices and substrates," says Gunther Fells, Head of the Digital Printing department at KL Druck, Germany. "The high-quality color conversions offered by GMG ColorServer optimally convert colors, including spot colors, into the color space of the required output devices. Since we have been using GMG color management technology with several of our HP Scitex printers, we have been able to achieve repeatable and identical print quality on every printing system and substrate in our portfolio, which otherwise is a very difficult and time consuming production process."

Recently, GMG successfully passed the FograCert Validation Printing System certification for the HP Indigo press 5500 and the HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press using the GMG ColorServer color management solution for the coated substrates Digi Gold Matt and Digi Gold Gloss from Papyrus/Schneidersoehne. The certification was achieved at HP in Boeblingen, Germany. In addition, IDEAlliance SWOP® (Specifications for Web Offset Publications) and GRACoL® (General Requirements and Applications for Commercial Offset Lithography) certifications have been granted to GMG ColorServer for the HP Indigo press 5500/5000 and the HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press.

"We are delighted to further strengthen our collaboration with HP as the de-facto market leader in the digital printing market. But we are even more satisfied that HP customers can confidently take advantage of the well-known GMG color management technology, which will impact both companies' technology leadership in this fast growing segment. Our common customers will certainly be very impressed by the high accuracy and repeatability of colors as well as by gaining more flexibility, with consistent print quality on different output devices, enabling users to select the printing process at the last minute", says Paul Willems, CEO of GMG GmbH & Co. KG.

"Based on use cases between HP Scitex customers and GMG, we are pleased to report that testing was successful and customers can maximize the performance of their printing systems with the combination of these two solutions. GMG provides innovative technology for high-quality color management in mixed production environments covering a wide range of HP commercial and wide-format output devices," adds Eli Israeli, Strategic Marketing, HP Scitex Division.

About GMG: The software company founded in 1984 and located in Tuebingen, near Stuttgart, Germany, has a worldwide distribution network with local presence in France, Spain, Benelux, Nordic, the UK, Asia and the Americas. GMG has specialized in high-end color management for the entire graphic arts industry. Today, more than 10,000 systems have been sold across the industry spectrum from ad agencies, prepress houses and offset printers to newspapers, flexo converters and international gravure printing plants. In fact, the GMG ColorProof system has become the de-facto standard of Europe's extensive gravure printing industry.

About the GMG family of products: GMG ColorProof, a color management software system, provides the most accurate way of calibrating digital inkjet proofing engines to produce digital contract color proofs, precisely matched to the printing press. GMG DotProof® enables users to generate contract quality halftone proofs, using the original bitmap data of the output RIP. Specifically tailored to the needs of the packaging industry is GMG FlexoProof, which supports specific flexo file formats and includes a complete Pantone® spot color library, along with other functions. GMG ColorServer is a tool for automatic color conversions - CMYK-to-CMYK, RGB-to-CMYK and RGB-to-RGB - for more efficient workflows. The GMG SmartProfiler wizard allows the profiling and calibration of different output devices, such as digital presses or large format systems, easily and quickly. GMG InkOptimizer automatically reduces chromatic colors, thus providing cost savings by reducing unnecessary ink usage, along with better print stability on press. GMG ProofControl is the ideal solution for instant, color-accurate verification of proofs. GMG PrintControl is one single software for standardizing the press from start to finish. GMG RapidCheck is a verification tool to control the printing process at a click of the mouse. GMG Media is a range of proofing-specific papers and films for the most popular inkjet printers. They are manufactured to high tolerances for color critical applications, available in a range of sizes.

Romano, whose career in the printing and publishing industries has spanned 50 years, will appear for two special sessions in the K-Zone at Kodak’s Ipex stand. At 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 and Thursday, May 20, Romano will be interviewed by Jo Francis, Associate Editor of Printweek to discuss the current status of the print industry; how new technologies are changing how print is regarded, produced and used; and why he thinks print is as vibrant and meaningful today as ever.

Ipex visitors are invited to attend either of Romano’s K-Zone sessions, meet the author, and receive a complimentary signed copy of the new book. The book provides an engaging history of print, the media and advertising industries that have been shaped by it, and the new technologies that are changing all the rules.

“The printing industry is so exciting because it is constantly changing,” noted Romano. “It’s changed more in the last 20 years than in the previous 600 years. We are very fortunate to be part of this industry and witness the digital transformation that is taking place today.”

KODAK Solutions are used in a third of all books printed worldwide, and every page in Romano’s new book was printed with KODAK Technology. The book demonstrates the range of Kodak’s inkjet, offset, and toner printing technologies, giving readers a chance to compare technologies side by side to see how offset class quality is delivered across the entire KODAK Product portfolio.

“The printing industry is in the midst of significant change, but it is still about producing products that educate, inform, persuade, engage and entertain people,” said Chris Payne, Director and Vice President, Business to Business Marketing, Kodak. “We are privileged to have this opportunity to work with Frank and use the powerful portfolio of KODAK Solutions to make his book available to Ipex attendees.”

Frank Romano is the editor of the International Paper Pocket Pal, the author of thousands of articles and 46 books, including the 10,000-term Encyclopedia of Graphic Communications (with Richard Romano), the standard reference in the field. Xerox Premier Partners Global Network Offers New Revenue Opportunities through Expanded Program

ROCHESTER, N.Y., May 17, 2010 – In an effort to help its network of more than 800 leading print providers from 48 countries better connect with current and potential customers, Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) has created a new web platform for its Premier Partners Global Network program. Designed to generate business and drive information and educational opportunities, the web portal is the latest installment to the program, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

“The key priority for our new web platform is to make it very easy for Premier Partners to connect with current and potential customers,” said Gavin Jordan-Smith, vice president, Commercial Print, Premedia Business and Premier Partners Global Network, Xerox Corporation. “We realize our members have many demands; helping them grow business and capture new revenue is now just a mouse click away.”

The peer-to-peer social platform is an open web forum where Premier Partners can share ideas and educational opportunities. The platform has a section dedicated to Xerox companies and business partners, including GMC Software Technology and XMPie®, a Xerox company, where Premier Partners can access promotions, beta and software trials, along with other exclusive opportunities.

Xerox is also launching a web and mobile search application via iPhone and BlackBerry. Print buyers and marketing professionals looking for a print provider can enter the services and applications needed, along with their location. The application integrates Google Maps technology to guide the print buyer to the door of the most appropriate Premier Partner.

“Membership has its benefits, evident by the new business-generating tools Xerox is making available to its Premier Partners,” said Bart Van Deuren, managing director, Publimail nv-sa, in Belgium. “The web portal will allow me to take full advantage of a global network of print providers; sharing insight about how to grow revenue and stay relevant with my customers. It will be a valuable component to my business development plan.”

The new services will be available to Xerox’s Premier Partners in July at http://www.xeroxpremierpartners.com. IPEX 2010 kicks off tomorrow, where attendees will see a full range of Xerox technology and solutions in the Xerox stand in Hall 7; IPEX is taking place May 18-25 in Birmingham, U.K.

XMPie debuts first interactive, one-to-one exhibit at Ipex 2010

Technology demonstration of print personalization for mobile users

NEW YORK, May 17, 2010 — XMPie® is highlighting its industry-leading one-to-one software in a first-of-its-kind, interactive exhibit at Ipex 2010. The XMPie Advantage is an exclusive, one-to-one showcase featuring movies, theatre presentations, interactive applications, new technologies and demonstrations of XMPie’s latest variable data print (VDP), cross-media and Web-to-print solutions. XMPie is also showcasing a new technology that brings print personalization into the hands of mobile users.

“Over the past 10 years, XMPie has developed a reputation for innovative, flexible and robust one-to-one solutions that keep users on the leading edge of highly creative marketing communications,” said Karin Stroh, vice president of marketing, XMPie. “At Ipex 2010, we are building on that reputation with an interactive and personalized exhibition. For the first time, the complete power and performance of XMPie’s technology will be on display, in the hands of attendees.”

XMPie’s exhibit will provide attendees with the opportunity to take a journey into the world of XMPie-enabled personalized communications. There will be a fast-paced, live action animated movie showing the one-to-one advantages only XMPie can provide, presentations highlighting real XMPie customer applications that demonstrate the keys to personalization success, and an interactive zone with self-service kiosks full of XMPie customer applications. There will also be ongoing demonstrations of XMPie’s latest solutions for VDP, cross-media campaigns and Web-to-print marketing portals.

Debuting at Ipex is a new technology demonstration of a future-looking one-to-one communication capability. uPrint Mobile is an iPhone App that integrates with PersonalEffect and allows the user to select a document, customize it with pictures just taken by the iPhone, and have the document printed on a nearby Xerox printer. It uses Xerox mobile printing technology to enable the local printing. With uPrint Mobile, XMPie pushes its idea of “Personalization at your Fingertips,” where personalized printing can be done on local devices controlled by the individual recipient, following a pull versus push model. It’s a new dimension for personalization where relevancy is not only improved by content and design, but also by the simple fact that the individual recipient creates the printed piece.

Additional highlights of what XMPie is planning for Ipex include:

  • The launch of PersonalEffect® 5.0, which includes new features and capabilities that (a) advance VDP performance and productivity, (b) provide better integration between the creation of print and e-media communications in cross-media campaigns, and (c) further simplify personalized e-mail processes.
  • Workflow and processing speed enhancements to uImage®, XMPie’s image personalization solution. uImage now includes a “packing” feature that streamlines the collaboration of designers, rules developers and production managers. In addition, processing speed was dramatically improved with innovative automatic optimizations for objects identification and objects caching and re-use.
  • The European introduction of uStore® 4.0 and uProduceTM Marketing Console 1.8. The latest version of XMPie’s uStore Web-to-print solution introduces anonymous store visiting, search-engine visibility for Web portals, automatic image enhancement, improved user management and permissions, the addition of the Ogone payment gateway with support for localized European payment options, and significant enhancements for enabling a smooth transition from staging stores to live stores. uProduce Marketing Console 1.8 includes breakthroughs that further streamline campaign management and provide a more in-depth view of recipient behavior and response to live campaigns.
  • The Ducati Xerox Team You’re the Rider Experience. Attendees will have the opportunity to take a photo on a Ducati motorbike and use an XMPie-powered kiosk to personalize and generate a unique, Ducati Xerox Team photo memento.

XMPie’s entire line of solutions for variable data, Web-to-print and cross-media communications will be on display in stand 07-CD450 at Ipex from May 18-25, 2010 in Birmingham. InfoPrint Solutions Launches New Inkjet Platform at IPEX

New Features for Industry Leading InfoPrint 5000 Give Customers More Choices

Boulder, Colo, May 10, 2010- InfoPrint Solutions Company, a joint venture between IBM and Ricoh, today announced the addition of the InfoPrint 5000 MP (multi-purpose) platform to its extremely successful family of continuous forms inkjet printers, supporting three speed points for low, medium, and high volume printing systems needs. This will be unveiled at IPEX, Birmingham, UK, May 18 – 25, 2010 where InfoPrint Solutions is exhibiting alongside Ricoh at booth 12-D130.

The InfoPrint 5000 MP, a smaller footprint member of the InfoPrint 5000 family, complements and is compatible with the existing full color models of the InfoPrint 5000. It provides customers with a new level of modularity, flexibility and investment protection. The InfoPrint 5000 MP can run a variety of inks and fluids and be utilized in various configurations, including a twin-engine, or tandem, monochrome duplex and coupling it with the InfoPrint 5000 color system to optimize the production of documents with checks or coupons using Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR).

“For the second year in a row InfoPrint Solutions is the market share leader in continuous-feed color inkjet systems installed in the United States and Western Europe. In 2009 InfoPrint Solutions held the number one position with over 30 percent market share. Since entering the market in 2007, InfoPrint Solutions has placed 35 percent of the systems installed in the United States and Western Europe. In that same time period InfoPrint Solutions and its partner, Dainippon Screen, have installed more than half of all continuous-feed color inkjet systems,” according to InfoTrends.*

“With the InfoPrint 5000 MP, a customer can easily reconfigure and re-purpose capital assets, protecting investments as needs change over time. It provides customers a new low level of power consumption and a significantly smaller footprint, with the same sustained high reliability and ease of use as all the other InfoPrint Solutions models,” said George Promis, Vice President of Production Inkjet Solutions and Technology Alliances, InfoPrint Solutions. “This is the next step in fulfilling our on-going commitment to customers to deliver technology that enables them to migrate applications to inkjet, while lowering costs and increasing revenue and profit.”

InfoPrint Solutions is also announcing a new ink measurement solution for the entire InfoPrint 5000 family. This includes tools that produce quick and accurate ink estimates at the job costing stage and show actual ink usage upon print completion. These complementary tools help customers leverage the significant economic benefit of InfoPrint 5000’s imaging techniques that dynamically select variable drop sizes for each pixel on the page, allowing optimization of document appearance vs. the amount of ink actually used. “With the InfoPrint 5000’s unique imaging technology, it’s not the ink price per liter, but the ink price per impression, that impacts your bottom line,” said Mike Herold, InfoPrint 5000 Product Manager.

The InfoPrint 5000 MP will also support PANTONE® PLUS. "As a leader in on-demand solutions, InfoPrint Solutions understands the impact color can have when incorporated into personalized marketing collateral, direct mail pieces and all business documents," said Andy Hatkoff, Vice President of Technology Licensing and Business Development for Pantone. "By supporting the new color offerings in PANTONE PLUS, InfoPrint Solutions is empowering its customers to employ even more creativity into their precision marketing campaigns."

These announcements demonstrate InfoPrint Solutions’ commitment to protecting customers’ investments as they migrate to inkjet print technology, with a short- or long-term goal of adding color to their documents.

The InfoPrint 5000’s market success, the most customer references in the industry, is due to many factors, including its exceptional print quality, high reliability, compact and simple design, ease of use, and the lowest power consumption in the industry for its class of product. PostScript®, PDF and AFP (Advanced Function Presentation) support along with a high performance controller, and a reputation for highly skilled inkjet implementation support have also been major contributors to InfoPrint 5000’s success.

In addition, InfoPrint Solutions offers customers access to its skilled professional services team who work with customers to enhance their print operations to reduce costs and grow revenue and profit.

The InfoPrint 5000 MP will be available in North America, Europe and Asia in the third quarter, 2010. See www.infoprint.com for more information.

Lyra Offers Ipex 2010 Preview: Setting the Commercial Ink Jet Table

Lyra's Commercial Ink Jet Analysts Available to Discuss the Latest Product and Marketing Trends at Ipex

Newton, MA -- April 14, 2010 -- Lyra Research, the digital imaging authority (www.lyra.com), has issued a market perspective, Ipex 2010 Preview: Setting the Commercial Ink Jet Table, that discusses what vendors such as Agfa, Fujifilm, HP, Impika, Kodak, Océ, Olympus, Riso, Screen, and Xerox will bring to the table at Ipex (click here to see figure). Ipex is the quadrennial trade show for the high-end printing industry that is held two years apart from drupa. This year's show will be held from May 18-25 at the NEC in Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

"While the 2008 drupa event was billed as 'the ink jet drupa' and was the show where ink jet emerged as a viable technology, this year's Ipex will be the show where ink jet becomes a legitimate contender for more than just transaction applications," said Peter Mayhew, director of Lyra Research Europe.

"Since the drupa show, Screen and InfoPrint have clearly hit their stride with their Epson-based Truepress and InfoPrint 5000 presses. There are reports that the two companies have now installed some 200 engines between them. HP's T300 Inkjet Web Press is now 'commercially available,' and HP has several beta sites in operation. Kodak is not quite at that stage, but it currently does have several installations of its Prosper S10 imprinting system installed and will have a black-only Prosper 1000 press installed by the time IPEX is held," Mayhew added.

Lyra's commercial ink jet market analysts, including Peter Mayhew, director of Lyra Research Europe; Steve Reynolds, senior analyst; and Tom Baratz, principal analyst for Lyra's Commercial Ink Jet Printing Advisory Service, will attend Ipex 2010 and are available to discuss what is happening in the commercial ink jet market and share Lyra's observations about the show. BÖWE Group at IPEX 2010

IPEX 2010: “The whole is more than the sum of its parts” – even in communication logistics.

Augsburg, March 18, 2010: With this motto, the BÖWE Group will present cross-product solutions for communication logistics at this year’s IPEX trade show from May 18 to 25 in Birmingham, England. In Hall 17, Booth 17 D 901, the Group will present innovative hardware and software that optimally interconnect individual customer requirements with the various processing steps in the mailroom. In addition, the BÖWE Group will use the international trade show as a platform to simultaneously introduce three new products to the European, Asian, and MEA markets: the new Turbo Premium26 for inserting in the high-performance segment, a new high-speed unwinder from Lasermax Roll Systems, as well as the inserting system Combo14 for fast C4-insertions and great flexibility with regard to envelope formats.

For the first time in Europe, the Turbo Premium26 from the Turbo Premium Family will be introduced. It is equipped with a fast, high-performance input channel for a paper feed of up to 80,000 pages per hour with 12" and an unbelievable inserting rate of 26,000 insertions per hour. Automatic job and enclosure setup shorten and simplify user operation, allowing for a harmonious interaction between man and machine.

In fulfilling the continuing trend in mailroom operations, the Turbo Premium26 at the trade show demonstrates an intelligent TransPromo application. It shows not only the fastest possible processing speeds while maintaining gentle material, but also the tracking and recording of all documents throughout the production process, which is achieved through the integration into the BÖWE One Item Workflow. This gives the customer unparalleled transparency and confidence.

In order to obtain these processing speeds, the high-performance inserting systems require extremely fast and reliable feeding components from the Pre and Post-Processing sector. For the first time, the BÖWE Group will introduce the newly developed high-performance unwinder Unwind u10 from Lasermax Roll Systems. It has a maximum feed speed that attains 3.5 meters per second (700 feet per minute) and can process paper either pinfed or pinless with a paper web width of 200–520 mm. Learn more about Lasermax Roll Systems: Hall 12, Booth 12 C 111.

With the Combo14, the BÖWE Group presents a new inserting system in the mid-range performance segment. It is not just extremely flexible in all formats, but was specially developed for the fast processing of DIN C6/5 and C4 envelope formats. The Combo14 attains 14,000 insertions per hour for DIN C6/5 as well as 9,000 inserts per hour for C4 formats. With that, the system offers the highest flexibility for a number of applications because it can rely on the complete input channel spectrum of the BÖWE Group inserting systems. A further feature of the Combo14 is EASE (Every Application Setup Easily), which allows the changeover from format DIN C6/5 to C4 with just eight adjustments and within a few minutes. This is possible without tools or specialized knowledge. With this, EASE not only simplifies the work of the operator, but also saves considerable time with job transitions and, therefore, automatically increases job productivity in the mailroom.

With the products from the BÖWE One Software Suite, the individual exhibits become a “giant whole” at the IPEX. BÖWE One Production Management collects the production data of both, the Combo14 and the Turbo Premium26, and analyzes them according to individual adjustable criteria. The interested trade show visitor can also get information on tracking and recording of document data with BÖWE One Item Tracking as well as data preparation with BÖWE One ReCompose.

The performance spectrum of the BÖWE Group is complemented through the multifunctional reading system JETVision. With this highly modern reading technology, the processing integrity of any third-party product can be increased, and the system can be integrated into the BÖWE One Software Suite. Consequently, the customer can centrally control and supervise the complete mailroom – even with production equipment from various manufacturers.

“Our clients want more than single systems and isolated applications. A comprehensive total solution is required that meaningfully interconnects all the processes and thereby insures secure processing, highest output quality, increase in efficiency in the mailroom, as well as a reduction in production costs,” asserts Willi Kanzler, Director of Corporate Marketing for the BÖWE Group. “With the exhibits at IPEX, we are showing that these customer expectations are our standard for the development of hardware and software solutions for modern communication logistics.”

All BÖWE Group companies are developing concepts and solutions for leading-edge communication logistics worldwide. Our technologically leading high-speed inserting systems, mail-verification and sorting technology, personalization and mailing systems for plastic cards, pre- and post-print processing systems as well as intelligent software modules are continuously setting standards in modern mailroom management for decades. We provide our customers with complete solutions of the highest standard and from one source for their individual requirements both in the mailroom and in data management: from competent consultancy through state-of-the-art solutions in hardware and software to comprehensive services. Kodak to Unveil KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press at Ipex 2010

Installations upcoming at Consolidated Graphics, Offset Paperback Manufacturers, Webcrafters and Rotomail Italia

LA HULPE, BELGIUM, March 8-Attendees at Ipex 2010 will be the first to see the industry-changing KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press. The color press, driven by KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology, will run in Kodak's stand, 9-E320.

"The launch of the PROSPER 5000XL Press marks a turning point in the digital print market, bringing previously unattainable levels of quality, productivity and total cost of ownership to print service providers and their customers that serve the book, direct mail, and catalog markets," said Kevin Joyce, Worldwide Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Digital Printing Solutions, Kodak. "Through demonstrations, samples and testimonials, visitors to our stand will learn how the PROSPER 5000XL Press delivers digital without compromise."

The color PROSPER 5000XL Press and monochrome KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press provide consistency from press to press and job to job, making it easy for printers to ensure maximum productivity and uptime. The family of PROSPER Products also includes the KODAK PROSPER S10 and S5 Imprinting Systems, monochrome continuous inkjet solutions for inline digital printing on high-speed web presses, finishing equipment and mailbases.

In a related announcement made today at a pre-Ipex press event, Rotomail Italia is set to become the first Kodak customer in Europe to install the revolutionary new KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press. This news follows earlier announcements of upcoming PROSPER installations at Consolidated Graphics, Offset Paperback Manufacturers and Webcrafters.

KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology: In a Class of Its Own Based on innovative KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology, PROSPER Solutions make it possible for print service providers to produce offset class output in terms of quality, productivity and cost for their clients, while offering the unique ability to print permanently on glossy coated papers. KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology serves as Kodak's latest revolutionary technology in continuous inkjet, which Kodak developed more than 40 years ago.

With Stream Inkjet Technology, speed and accurate drop placement are ensured using a continuous flow of ink through inkjet nozzles at a very high volume. The stream of ink is then stimulated by thermal energy to break it into individual droplets. These drops of ink are then thrust from the nozzles at a very high rate of speed to guarantee excellent drop placement accuracy and image quality. Stream Inkjet Technology uses air deflection and silicon nozzles to deliver uniform ink droplet size and accurate droplet placement with a drop generation speed over 400KHz, producing image quality approaching up to175 line screen (lpi) at speeds up to 650 feet per minutes (200 meters per minute) in a process color environment.

An enclosed and secure jetting module forms the core of Stream Inkjet Technology solutions. The jetting module contains a single row of high-velocity jetting nozzles for fast printing speeds that deliver ink to paper with simplicity and reliability, all in a single pass. To further enhance productivity and maximize uptime, jetting modules can easily be changed by the operator in a matter of minutes.

Kodak's proprietary inks for Stream Inkjet Technology boast an advanced formulation to further enhance print quality, permanence and durability while offering the unique ability to print on glossy coated substrates. Providing exceptional vibrancy, color gamut and color consistency, these high-performance inks won't clog jetting modules, which contributes to reliability and productivity. In addition, due to the continuous flow of ink through nozzles, the inks require minimal wetting agents which keep the inkjet nozzles clean and help extend the life of the jetting module. Due to the lack of wetting agent in the ink, printing and drying on coated and glossy papers are improved with an appearance similar to offset print.

PROSPER Press Platform Opens New Opportunities
The first installation of a PROSPER 1000 Press will begin later this month at Offset Paperback Manufacturers (OPM), a Bertelsmann company, in Laflin, Penn. OPM chose the KODAK PROSPER Press Platform with an integrated MULLER MARTINI SIGMALINE in-line finishing system for its book printing operation.

The PROSPER Press Platform enables print and marketing service providers the ability to maximize production and supply chain efficiencies, and improve return on marketing investment. For book publishers, the PROSPER Press Platform provides an ideal solution for short-run books with economics that drive operational and supply chain efficiencies for run lengths up to 7000 books.

"With continuous inkjet solutions such as KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology, we are seeing a reduction in costs and significant improvement in quality," said Bill Lamparter of PrintCom Consulting. "Led by PROSPER Products, we'll see continuous growth in the application areas for inkjet-from books to direct mail and others."

PROSPER 5000XL and 1000 Presses are up to 38% more productive than competitive inkjet systems and feature a print speed of up to 650 fpm (200 mpm) with image quality approaching up to 175 lpi, and a monthly duty cycle of up to 120 million A4 pages. The presses are able to handle both coated and uncoated papers, including glossy coated, with basis weights ranging from 45 gsm-175 gsm (30 lbs-120 lbs) on the PROSPER 1000 Press and 45 gsm-300 gsm (30 lbs-200 lbs) on the PROSPER 5000XL Press.

A modular and scaleable architecture means that customers can leverage investments in the PROSPER 1000 Press to easily upgrade in the field to a PROSPER 5000XL Press, ensuring they have the best configuration to meet their needs. The PROSPER Press Platform has a 20% lower cost of operation and is 10 times more reliable than thermal inkjet products.

The PROSPER Press Platform will be driven by the KODAK 700 Print Manager, a front-end system enabling high-quality variable data printing at the full rated speed of 650 fpm for the entire range of target applications. The KODAK 700 Print Manager accepts and processes a variety of data streams, including PDF, POSTSCRIPT, PPML-GA, PPML-VDX, VPS, and AFP/IPDS. The KODAK 700 Print Manager also offers industry-leading color management for a greater level of quality assurance and process automation. The optimized interface between the KODAK 700 Print Manager and KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System provides advanced automation, making it easier for print providers to blend offset and digital printing technology.

Kodak is developing finishing solutions for the PROSPER Press Platform with a number of industry leaders, including Hunkeler, Muller Martini and Lasermax Roll Systems. Finishing solutions will be provided for a wide range of applications such as roll to roll, book blocks, perfect bound books, saddlestitched books, signatures, and fanfolded and cut sheet output.

Amidst the current economic climate, Ipex 2010 has remained a popular platform for offset companies to showcase their machinery and newest technologies. Of all lithographic press manufacturers situated across the four halls 6, 7, 8, 17 and 20, Heidelberg, KBA, Goss, manroland and Komori will have the largest stands at the show.

Trevor Crawford, Ipex 2010 Event Director says, "Close on 30% of the show's floorspace will be devoted to offset, proving that despite tough competition from other printing technologies, it continues to play a highly important role in print production. Feedback from exhibitors indicates that visitors can expect innovative new equipment at the show with a strong focus on automation, productivity and added value options to help printers stay competitive and create new business opportunities in this tough market."

George Clarke, Managing Director of Heidelberg UK, says, "Ipex 2010 is a venue for innovation and in today's demanding market printers should be looking at press developments that allow them to be more productive, flexible and effective.

"Lean manufacturing, environmental solutions and colour control will be key issues at this show. The printers' customers care much more about quality and sustainability than ever before. Certification, accreditations and proven control mechanisms are expected and often need to be specified in tender documents.

"At the same time printers are competing not only against each other but against rival media so they need solutions that allow them to be responsive and extremely cost-competitive. We live in a world of much more bespoke presses with many more inline options so that printers can still find niche which allow them to stand out from the crowd.

"At Ipex Heidelberg will replicate a typical print shop with presses of various formats, handling a range of stocks, paper types, inks and jobs and switching over quickly and efficiently to continuously produce first rate print. More and more artificial intelligence and automation is built into the latest generation presses and this trend coupled with developments in paper and materials flow will be seen in Hall 8."

Philip Dunn, European Marketing Manager at Komori says, "We've always enjoyed great success at Ipex; the show presents the ideal opportunity to talk with our existing customers and meet printers who are not familiar with Komori technology, from across the world. We receive very positive feedback from visitors to Ipex: for example, our distributors find it a manageable show to visit, thanks to the exhibition layout. Visitors to the Komori stand 06-B520 will be able to see live demonstrations of our new technologies and will be able to witness the production of the official Ipex Daily publication on our stand."

Jacques Navarre, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Goss International comments, "Ipex 2010 provides the perfect opportunity to present the latest updates on key Goss technology developments first presented at Drupa 2008, which are now successfully installed and fulfilling expectations. We participate because we believe the unique show environment delivers value for our customers and for our industry, generating enthusiasm for new technologies and ideas. It is also the first major event for Goss International following the ownership investment by Shanghai Electric Corporation and, as such, is an ideal platform for presenting the strengthened structure, our innovative press and finishing technology and an expanding product range. In exhibiting jointly with Shanghai Electric - a large and financially strong organisation with an industrial focus, an international outlook and a long-term commitment to the print sector - we will be sending a strong signal about our continued ability to innovate, execute and deliver value through a worldwide manufacturing and support platform."

Solutions set provides customers with 'One-Stop-Shop' for end-to-end print and mail processing power and integrity

Pitney Bowes will exhibit at Ipex 2010 with the 'missing piece' from its product portfolio impressively filled and with its stand branded to display a critical message for all high volume print and mailers - '1ntegrate'.

The Pitney Bowes showcase will demonstrate how the company's proven pre- and post-print software and hardware portfolio has been boosted with the addition of the IntelliJet Printing System - the result of Pitney Bowes' strategic alliance with HP.

With the addition of the IntelliJet Printing System, Pitney Bowes takes a significant foothold in the production print market and becomes the one vendor able to demonstrate a truly integrated end-to-end print and mail offering.

The Pitney Bowes stand will provide a clear vision of the business benefits that are driven by integration. Hardware and software presentations will demonstrate how integrating these functions can improve operational performance, help to build stronger customer relationships and provide the scope to produce more timely, personalized and relevant customer communications.

    Software driven integration
The full range of Pitney Bowes Production Intelligence software solutions will be demonstrated - effectively the brain-power behind print and mail integration. Experts will be on hand to show how this intuitive software can improve the control and efficiency of document workflows across an enterprise, from robust Output Management solutions, Automated Document Factory (ADF) management solutions to Multi-Channel and Hybrid Mail enabling solutions.

    Launch! Three new inserters
The Pitney Bowes exhibit will showcase THREE new inserters, adding further choice and flexibility to the industry's leading portfolio. The new systems are tailored at specific industry needs - one aimed squarely at the transaction mail market, another designed to work alongside production insertion technology to finish reprints and small jobs without compromising productivity or integrity levels, and the final new addition serving as a flexible companion to the proven DPS range. Full details will be announced at the show.

Ronald van Hees, Marketing Director, Pitney Bowes, comments: "Ipex 2010 will demonstrate that the Pitney Bowes portfolio boasts solutions that cover every aspect of the mail and messaging process - from data-quality and integrity, to printing, inserting and sorting.

"We expect to create a real buzz with our new solutions and with the sheer breadth of our capabilities. There will be no other stand at Ipex that delivers the end-to-end processing story in such a convincing and demonstrable fashion, or that offers dedicated solutions for the particular transactional and direct marketing markets as well as the fast-moving world of TransPromo."

    IntelliJet Printing System
A giant-screen video will convey the power of the new IntelliJet Printing System - detailing how the system has been designed to operate consistently at 400 feet per minute with a 30" wide format and 1200 x 600 dpi color quality. Outputs from the IntelliJet will be used within on-stand demonstrations to explain how the Pitney Bowes mail creation, insertion and finishing portfolio dovetails seamlessly with this new color print powerhouse - creating synergies that help to reduce costs and improve the quality of customer communications.

The Pitney Bowes stand will also showcase the latest developments to two established industry-favorite inserters.

Mailstream Productivity Series 26 (MPS 26) The latest addition to the MPS family enables high-volume production mailers to achieve the highest throughput with the greatest degree of flexibility, running up to 26,000 mailpieces per hour. The MPS 26 has been designed to harness the power of the IntelliJet print engine with its ability to seamlessly process the IntelliJet's 3-up output. The MPS will also connect to the new Pitney Bowes Envelope Finishing System (EFST), an on-envelope color printer that enables 1-to-1 variable TransPromo messaging - further enhancing the 'openability' of customer communications.

    FPST Split Drive Inserting System
Mailers running applications in DL, C5 and C4 envelopes can see a new level of ease and simplicity on the FPS Split Drive Inserting System. The name says it all - the FPST Split Drive system allows the inserter to separate document collation assembly and the envelope insertion function processes to maximize productivity. With the largest installed base worldwide, this industry workhorse can increase uptime with its new changeover capabilities, which enables the FPS system to go from a DL, C5 to C4 envelopes format, quickly and easily.

These are just some of the highlights of Pitney Bowes' Ipex 2010 showcase. Further details will be released as Showtime approaches. The Ipex stand represents Pitney Bowes' biggest ever exhibition space - an impressive space dedicated to a powerful message: '1integrate'.

Xerox to Extend Digital Leadership at IPEX 2010

Xerox to Extend Digital Leadership at IPEX 2010; New Customer Deals, Breakthrough Technology Cement Command Position

LONDON, Feb. 8, 2010 - Today at the IPEX Media Summit, Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) demonstrated its leadership in the global digital production print market by announcing several new deals with customers using Xerox technology and services to boost their bottom lines. The company furthered this leadership position with a preview of IPEX announcements, including news about Xerox's first production inkjet system.

"The strategy behind adding inkjet to the Xerox portfolio is comparable to how automobile manufacturers offer cars powered by gas, diesel or electricity - each meets a different performance standard," said Eric Armour, president, Global Business Group, Xerox Corporation. "We delivered breakthrough toner-based color continuous feed solutions allowing new levels of cost, image quality and speed for transpromotional applications. Our new offering will meet similar requirements for those looking for an inkjet option."

At IPEX, the company will also show enhancements to the Xerox 650/1300(tm) Continuous Feed Printing Systems, toner-based monochrome devices. These include heavy-weight media compatibility, running duplex applications up to 200 gsm and the FreeFlow(r) Print Server 7 and ImageSmooth(r) Technology, delivering unmatched image quality without slowing down the printer.

During the IPEX Media Summit, customers described how Xerox's digital technology and business development services have successfully opened up new revenue streams:

  • Cathedral Corporation (U.S.) - This service bureau is the first in the U.S. to install a Xerox 980 Color Continuous Feed System, addressing a growing demand for color and personalized transpromotional pieces. Xerox's continuous feed technology is meeting Cathedral's business needs in ways that high-speed inkjet solutions cannot, allowing Cathedral to produce highly targeted communications quickly and cost effectively.

"We evaluated a number of technology options, including the high-speed inkjet devices that are available today," said Marianne Gaige, president and CEO, Cathedral. "The image quality of the Xerox 980 system was far superior; our decision was easy."

  • EXPRES Printing (Romania) - Selling the value and quality of digital print is particularly challenging where the digital print market is considered uncharted territory. Graphic communications provider EXPRES Printing is leading the way in this developing market by installing the Xerox iGen4(tm) Press and the Xerox 700 Digital Color Press - and by joining Xerox's Graphic Arts Premier Partners Program.

"The technology investment is only part of the solution," said Dacian Badea, executive manager, EXPRES Printing. "Our partnership with Xerox - in terms of technology, business development and its FreeFlow Digital Workflow Collection - gives us a significant competitive advantage. This benefits our customers and, ultimately, our business."

  • Mediaware Digital (Ireland) - One of the first customers to install Xerox's Automated Packaging Solution powered by Stora Enso Gallop(tm), Mediaware is helping Microsoft Corporation bring Windows 7 to market faster.

"Given the worldwide distribution in multiple languages required for this project, we needed a solution that could produce different sized batches of the packaging with specialized information for different regions," said Ronan Phipps, director, business and strategy, Mediaware Digital. "We found this, and more, in the Xerox solution."

    Xerox at IPEX 2010
In its Real Business Live! Theater, presentations will cover topics such as profit generating print jobs, increasing automation and 1:1 marketing. These business relevant discussions will combine industry expertise and application demonstrations.

The XMPie(r) Innovation Showcase, which debuted to audience acclaim at Print 09, has been enhanced for IPEX. Attendees will have the opportunity to personally interact with an XMPie-driven cross-media campaign - complete with a customized postcard, e-mail message, Response URL(tm) (RURL) Web site, Google Map, PayPal transaction, mobile message and fulfillment offering.

Xerox will also sponsor its Best-of-the-Best contest at IPEX, open to members of its Graphic Arts Premier Partners Program. Contestants that demonstrate the best digital print applications - with exceptional image quality and tangible business results - will receive awards during the show.

Xerox's booth at IPEX 2010 will be located in hall 7, stand 7-CD450, May 18-25 in Birmingham, U.K.

HP Accelerates Growth Opportunities for Graphic Arts Customers with Expanded Digital Printing Portfolio

HP introduces new digital presses, large-format printers, workflow software and finishing solutions

BIRMINGHAM, U.K., May 18, 2010 – HP today expanded its graphic arts portfolio to help its customers print top-quality, high-value materials and capture a larger share of a global digital printing market that the company expects to reach €96 billion ($124 billion) by 2014.

Delivering on its strategy to drive growth in digitally printed pages, HP introduced a high-speed HP Color Inkjet Web Press for large-volume production, an HP Indigo digital press with intelligent automation features for increased quality and productivity and new HP SmartStream workflow software solutions that improve processing times.

For the large-format printer market, HP announced additions to its HP Scitex and HP Designjet portfolios that improve performance and extend into new application areas. HP also launched new photo-market and entry-level commercial Indigo digital presses, partner finishing systems, the HP Color Print Module imprinting solution, media and services – all aimed at helping customers profitably grow their businesses. HP is demonstrating the new solutions at Ipex 2010, the major graphic arts tradeshow of the year. The company has the show’s largest stand and broadest display of digital printing technologies, including a simulated production floor and customer presentations that showcase its extensive range of real-world applications.

The announcements build on HP’s success at drupa 2008, where HP introduced a broad range of presses and solutions. HP has delivered all of these to market over the last two years, helping its customers grow in the midst of an industry downturn. For example, HP has installed more than 350 of its flagship HP Indigo 7000 digital presses and added the new HP Indigo W7200 model for photo specialty applications. In addition, the HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press unveiled at drupa 2008 is now in full operation at major customer sites, handling peak print volumes of up to 2 million 4/0 pages per day.

“In the last year, the industry experienced double-digit percent growth for digital color production pages, while analog pages declined,(1)” said Christopher Morgan, senior vice president, Graphics Solutions Business, HP. “This is a clear sign that the market has shifted, as print service providers and other graphic arts professionals are moving to digital systems so they can produce more targeted and creative materials while also improving quality and productivity.”

HP T200 press extends high-volume inkjet portfolio
With nine completed customer installations of the HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press, HP has become a technology leader in the emerging high-volume production color inkjet market for book, transactional/transpromotional(2) and direct mail printing. Building on this success, HP is unveiling the 521-mm (20.5-inch) wide HP T200 Color Inkjet Web Press, a full duplex four-color press in a single engine for high-speed, high-volume production printing.

The HP T200 press extends reliable HP Scalable Printing Technology to a broader set of customers with a more compact machine designed to fit existing production environments. It also easily supports the addition of full variable color capabilities in two-up production mail and short-run or on-demand publications.

Expected to be available in 2011, the HP T200 prints 821 four-color duplex A4 pages per minute and has a 23 million page monthly duty cycle. Its innovative new paper path makes the press small enough to fit in nearly the same space as a monochrome digital web press, enabling experienced digital print service providers (PSPs) to upgrade to full-color high-volume digital printing while eliminating less efficient, offset printing.

The new press offers 1,200 x 600 addressable dots per inch (dpi) imaging with HP Bonding Agent to improve image quality on standard uncoated media. Both the HP T200 and T300 support the new Utopia Inkjet coated media from Appleton Coated and media featuring ColorPRO Technology – a quality standard for color excellence in digital printing. ColorPRO media is available from Georgia Pacific as well as new ColorPRO licensees AbitibiBowater, International Paper and Stora Enso.

To help PSPs pursue opportunities in the high-volume transactional print market, HP is developing a new Magnetic Ink Character Recognition printing solution. The company also introduced workflow and finishing products from partners CMC, EMT, Hunkeler, Lasermax Roll Systems, Magnum, MBO, Muller Martini, Tecnau, Timsons, Ultimate Technographics and Videk.

At its Ipex stand, Pitney Bowes will show technology from the T200 and T300 Color Inkjet Web Presses as part of its IntelliJet™ Printing solution for transactional and transpromotional printing.

New HP Indigo 7500 and 3550 Digital Presses: expanding the sheetfed portfolio
The HP Indigo 7500 Digital Press is a highly automated solution that elevates sheetfed digital printing to new levels of quality, reliability and productivity. The press’s innovative automation and print quality improvements make it ideally suited to replace small and midsize analog offset presses and to handle high-value applications, such as variable-data-driven marketing collateral, photo books and personalized direct mail.

The enhanced HP Indigo 5500 continues to be the mainstream production solution for PSPs with volumes up to 1 million color pages per month, while the new entry-level HP Indigo 3550 delivers offset quality at a low initial investment for customers taking their first step into digital print applications. The HP Indigo 3550 offers improved productivity and ease-of-use, supports a broader range of media, and reduces environmental impact with an on-press oil recycling system.(3) All three models are available for immediate delivery.

Based on the HP Indigo 7000 platform, the top-of-the-line HP Indigo 7500 introduces Intelligent Automation, a major factor in increasing press productivity by up to 10 percent. A new Vision System entirely automates manual calibrations and diagnostic troubleshooting wizards to save time, reduce waste and limit the dependency on operator skill level. The Vision System infrastructure allows customers to add new functionality in software, offering a growth path that preserves their investments. HP also is demonstrating real-time early-defect-detection technology that identifies print defects and notifies the operator. It will be available as an option at a later date.

The HP Indigo 7500 also surpasses the print quality of the HP Indigo 7000, which recently gained top recognition at the “DIMA Shootout.” For example, the HP 7500 improves color consistency and uniformity by up to 20 percent and offers new screens that improve print quality for certain image types. The press also consumes up to 10 percent less energy per printed page and uses less imaging oil.

New options available on the HP Indigo 7500 support white ink, light-cyan/light-magenta for photo applications and thick substrates up to 400 gsm/460 microns. To protect customer investments, the majority of enhancements to the HP Indigo 7500 are planned to be available in 2011 as upgrades to the HP Indigo 7000.

“We believe that the HP Indigo 7500 Digital Press provides the highest quality digital printing in the marketplace, with productivity levels that a conventional offset printer in its heyday would be proud of,” said Gary Peeling, managing director at Precision Printing.

Innovations in intelligent automation for HP Indigo presses
HP also will demonstrate new finishing capabilities at IPEX that eliminate manual intervention and lower production costs, improve turnaround time and enhance document integrity. A new Universal Finishing Interface (UFI) connects the press and its workflow to an automated in-line or near-line finishing environment. HP collaborated with Lasermax Roll Systems for two key building blocks in this new finishing environment:

  • PageReady™ – a fully automatic cutter/slitter/merger/stacker that has the potential to revolutionize the production flow for books, photo, direct mail and transpromo. With JDF-enabled fully automatic job setups, PageReady enables virtually unattended operation with no intervention required between jobs.
  • FinishReady™ Controller – a central interface that integrates the HP Indigo digital press with both in-line and near-line finishing solutions. FinishReady manages and tracks the status of every job through each finishing step, confirming absolute document integrity.

The fully modular finishing architecture will be shown with the HP Indigo 7500 and additional finishing equipment from partners, including the Duplo/IBIS Alpha Saddle heavy-duty saddle stitcher and GMP’s inline COATMASTER-IN3752UV for UV coating.

HP SmartStream solutions increase production efficiency and profitability
Complementing the HP Indigo presses is a full portfolio of HP SmartStream workflow solutions, including the new 64-bit HP SmartStream Production Pro Print Server Version 4.0 – a digital front-end solution that improves workflow performance processing times by an average of 18 percent.(4) It adds valuable features for HP Indigo presses, including transparency in variable-data elements with support for Personalized Production Markup Language (PPML) version 3.0, as well as greater flexibility and productivity in variable-data printing(4) with support for the Adobe® PDF/VT format. To address customer needs for efficient offset/digital hybrid workflows, the HP SmartStream Production Plus Print Server, Powered by Creo, connects to the Kodak Prinergy Workflow.

On display for the first time in Europe, the new HP SmartStream Production Analyzer monitors and analyzes HP Indigo production operations in real time, providing a central console for fleet management and optimum press operation.

New solutions for packaging applications and photo markets
The new HP Indigo portfolio can support an expanded range of applications, including flexible packaging, folding cartons and photo portraits. To help PSPs enter new packaging markets, HP offers an extended range of solutions with partners, including AB Graphic International, Brausse Group, Epic Products International, Kama GmbH, EskoArtwork and Kompac Technologies for folding carton production on HP Indigo WS6000 and 5500 and 7500 presses,(5) and ACPO, Charter Films, D&K Group and Innovia Films for flexible packaging printing on the HP Indigo WS6000.

Since its release in September 2009, the HP Indigo W7200 has been installed at multiple publications and direct-marketing/transpromo PSPs. At Ipex, HP is launching enhanced capabilities for the HP Indigo W7200 with light-cyan/light-magenta inks, in-line lamination and full-speed monochrome printing, bringing increased productivity for the photo merchandise and publishing segments. A new HP Indigo WS6000p Digital Press with in-line GMP LAMIMASTER-34 laminator addresses the market for book-cover production and high-value photo applications. In addition, HP is displaying the HP Indigo 7000 and the HP Indigo press 5500.

New HP Scitex printers introduce HP Latex Inks for the signage market
HP also introduced its first HP Scitex large-format printers using HP Latex Inks: the 3.2-m (126-inch) HP Scitex LX800 and 2.6-m (104-inch) HP Scitex LX600.

As the largest, most productive HP Latex Ink device to date, the HP Scitex LX800 Printer sets a new image-quality standard for the industrial large-format market. It features roll-to-free fall, roll-to-collector and dual-roll (up to two 1.52-m/60-inch rolls) capabilities. The LX800 also produces high-quality output with 1,200 dpi resolution at production speeds up to 88 m²/hr. (947 ft²/hr.) for outdoor billboards and 45 m²/hr. (484 ft²/hr.) for indoor applications.

“The benefits of the HP Scitex LX800 to our bottom line have far outweighed the investment,” said Vicente Verdu, sales manager at Barcelona-based Verdúdigital. “We have attracted many new customers by achieving outstanding image quality while satisfying our customer demands to cut costs.”

HP also expanded its range of UV-curable printers. The HP Scitex FB500, a new UV flatbed printer, enables digital and screen printers, sign shops, converters and large repro houses to bring rigid-printing capabilities in-house. Featuring a 163-cm (64-inch) print width and optional white ink capabilities, the HP Scitex FB500 Printer addresses a wide range of applications. Additionally, it allows remote monitoring via the HP Embedded Web Server and an onboard camera.

For the high-volume sign and display market, HP’s newest TJ-series UV printer, the HP Scitex TJ8600, features full and selective gloss print modes with exceptional quality and new HP TJ210 Scitex Inks. It supports an expanded range of applications, including most fleet graphics and point-of-purchase applications, due to higher elongation, improved flexibility and reduced odor compared to HP TJ200 Scitex Inks. An upgrade kit – including hardware, software, on-site installation and training – will be available for existing owners of HP Scitex TJ8500/8550 Printers.

Low-volume users can take large-format printing opportunities in-house
A new HP Designjet Z5200 PostScript® Printer making its debut at IPEX is a simple, affordable device for small commercial print businesses interested in entering the large-format market. Suited for a broad range of applications, the 112-cm (44-inch) printer includes new HP Instant Printing Pro software that offers fast, easy file preparation and automates production tasks. The printer is compatible with new ColorPRO papers that produce striking, cost-effective everyday prints.

“The HP Designjet Z5200 PostScript Printer gives our copy shop image quality and complete printing tools with a high printing speed,” said Rubén Navarrete, graphic designer and production manager for Barcelona-based Copymark. “We earn a higher margin per print from large-format printing and we can also add design and production to the services we offer.”

HP also introduced two printers for technical design professionals. The 61-cm (24-inch) model of the HP Designjet T770 Printer series includes an easy-to-access top-loading roll, expandable memory and fast speeds. The HP Designjet 111 Printer, the company’s most affordable and compact large-format printer, delivers high-quality, cost-effective prints – including posters and presentations for less than $1 each.(6)

Expanded service offerings backed by the world’s IT leader

First European Installation of KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press for SAGIM in France

SAGIM boosts short-run book printing operation with KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press

BIRMINGHAM, UK, May 20—French print service provider, SAGIM, is set to become the first printer in Europe to install the new KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press. The Courtry-based company near Paris specializes in the creation of monochrome books with color cover overlays, and will use the KODAK Press to enhance its short-run printing capacity. SAGIM counts large French book publishers among its customer base, including Flammarion, Dunod, Grasset, PUF, Seuil, Gallimard and Odile Jacob, to name a few.

The KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press is a monochrome digital inkjet press that is based on KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology. The advanced machine delivers offset-class quality, and will help SAGIM create new short-run book printing opportunities at a low total cost of ownership. In addition, the speed and reliability of the PROSPER 1000 Press will help boost the company’s productivity.

The PROSPER 1000 Press uses an advanced ink formulation associated with KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology. The formulation increases print quality and durability, and has the ability to print on glossy coated substrates. The PROSPER 1000 Press offers one-over-one perfecting, with a print width of up to 25.5 inches (64.8 cm) at speeds of up to 650 feet per minute (200 mpm). It has a duty cycle of 120 million A4 or US letter pages a month, and can support run lengths of up to 7,000 copies. The KODAK PROSPER Press Platform is up to 38% more productive than competitive inkjet systems.

Increasing profitability by meeting publishers’ changing needs
SAGIM’s transition to digital printing will widen its business scope and make the company more attractive to customers in the highly competitive book printing sector.

SAGIM currently operates two VARIQUIK monochrome web offset presses to produce the books, and two KOMORI and KBA sheetfed offset presses, in four (2 + 2) and five colors, to produce the book covers.

“We turned to digital printing because run lengths continued to shrink,” explains SAGIM’s General Manager Christian Devambez. “Today, book publishers want to keep their inventories down. They prefer to produce smaller initial print runs and reprint when necessary.”

The impact of this shift means today’s book printers must offer competitive pricing on short runs and be able to reprint on a short deadline. “Currently, our average run length is 3,000 copies,” adds Devambez. “With the KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press, we will be able to consistently produce runs of 300 to 2,000 copies. Essentially the new KODAK Press will help us meet publishers’ demands and remain competitive in the book printing market.”

SAGIM decided to invest in the PROSPER 1000 Press at the end of 2009. After considering all existing digital printing technologies—from xerography to inkjet, from web to sheetfed—the company finally opted for web inkjet.

“We based our decision on print quality and productivity,” explains Devambez. “We chose the PROSPER 1000 Press for its high throughput and its cutting-edge technology. Kodak’s market presence and reputation also tipped the scales toward this PROSPER Solution.”

SAGIM will also benefit from the fact that the print width of the PROSPER 1000 Press is consistent with the company’s VARIQUIK offset presses. This will enable SAGIM to manage the same paper stock for both its offset and digital printing workflows—a significant advantage that made the PROSPER 1000 Press even more attractive. SAGIM will use the PROSPER 1000 Press with an in-line HUNKELER finishing solution to automate folding and cutting. Book binding will be managed offline in the first instance. The PROSPER 1000 Press is set to be installed at the end of August.

“We expect to gradually increase our production volume and reach our peak level at the end of this year,” concludes Devambez.

KODAK NEXPRESS with Print Genius is One of the World’s Most Innovative Solutions for High Speed, High Quality 4-Color Photo Publishing

Now linked with Consumer Facing Websites and Desktop Software to Drive New Revenue Opportunities for Commercial Printers

BIRMINGHAM, U.K., May 21—Eastman Kodak Company’s new Print Genius suite for KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Presses, on display at Ipex, Hall 9 – E320, the world’s leading commercial print trade show, brings new photo publishing capabilities that expand commercial printer service offerings and improve production efficiency. When combined with expanded connectivity to online service providers, the KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Color Solution becomes one of the most innovative solutions in the industry, with outstanding image quality at real world digital print speeds, opening up more opportunity for commercial printers to grab a piece of the high growth personal photo product market, including photobooks, greeting cards and calendars.

The improvements begin with the new Print Genius suite, which brings together image science, quality assurance and workflow productivity to provide superior quality and higher efficiency through new enhanced dry ink developers, intelligent image calibration and closed loop quality control. This raises the bar of print quality for commercial printers—all at real world production speed. In addition, new workflow productivity solutions including ADOBE PDF Print Engine to minimize RIP time, enhanced object caching and long life operator replaceable components maximize productivity and boost profit potential for Kodak partners.

“Consumers capture and share billions of digital photos and trillions of frames of video, and they want to combine their captured memories to tell their life stories, creating a huge opportunity for commercial printers,” said Isidre Rosello, General Manager, Digital Printing Solutions, Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “With the combination of our new Print Genius suite and online connectivity, NEXPRESS owners can tap into more profit opportunity than ever before. According to InfoTrends, the billion-dollar photo product market is growing at 23 percent year on year, and with our new solution we believe we have the world’s highest quality, most productive photo capable commercial solution in the industry, providing maximum profit potential for our partners at real world production speeds.”

Connectivity for the NEXPRESS Press photo applications provides enhanced services for both consumer and professional applications, and Kodak has connection to fulfillers around the globe who have KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Production Presses, and who are leveraging Kodak’s Photo Website Hosting and Desktop Premium Product software. They can now generate highly profitable photobooks, greeting cards, personalized postcards, calendars and other merchandise with standard and KODAK NEXPRESS Intelligent Dimensional Coating Solution and Glossing pages combined. The dimensional pages offer NEXPRESS Press owners the opportunity to generate additional revenue at higher margins than typical printed pages.

Professional photo labs entering or expanding their photo merchandising business will benefit from improved connectivity between KODAK PROFESSIONAL Digital Print Production Software and NEXPRESS Presses. Output to a NEXPRESS Press from DP2 provides an automated workflow with job ticketing and queue management for producing a wide range of professional photobooks and other products, which again can be further enhanced with KODAK NEXPRESS Dimensional Clear Dry Ink. Third-party photo merchandise creation software tools will also enable users to output to a NEXPRESS Press from enterprise desktop applications. This capability enables businesses to produce photo merchandise directly from a standard industry file format, such as ADOBE Portable Document Format (PDF).

“Kodak’s customers can immediately use these technologies to increase opportunities for their businesses,” said Phil Faraci, President and Chief Operating Officer, Eastman Kodak Company. “The rise in popularity of digital photos represents a significant segment where printers can drive growth through services aimed at helping consumers preserve photos for generations, with high-quality printing such as personalized photobooks and calendars. HP Establishes Beta Test Plan with Quad/Graphics for HP Color Print Module Imprinting Technology

BIRMINGHAM, U.K., May 21, 2010 – HP today announced it is working with Quad/Graphics, one of the world's leading printers of magazines, catalogs, direct mail and other commercial products, on a plan to host the first commercial beta test of the HP Color Print Module imager.

The advanced imager, which uses HP Scalable Printing Technology thermal inkjet imaging, integrates cost-effective four-color process digital printing into traditional offset web press lines.

"Personalized, color content is essential to multichannel marketers, so HP is bringing these capabilities to the print space," said Kathy Tobin, vice president and general manager, Specialty Printing Systems, HP. "Working in collaboration with Quad/Graphics, we plan to refine the HP Color Print Module to provide customers maximum value."

HP and Quad/Graphics are currently determining the best uses for the HP Color Print Module throughout Quad/Graphics' manufacturing platform, based on Quad/Graphics' personalization priorities.

"Today's marketers require innovative solutions for getting their message to the right people at the right time quickly and cost-effectively," said Steve Jaeger, President of QuadDirect, the direct mail division of Quad/Graphics. "We are excited by the possibilities of HP's technology, which will go a long way to strengthen our ability to help clients create targeted, relevant print messages that connect seamlessly with other media channels."

Producing four-color text and images at a high resolution, the HP Color Print Module imager prints in many different configurations at swift speeds that meet manufacturing expectations. When tied to database/CRM systems, the imager can produce personalized marketing images tailored to an end user's data.

By producing marketing images and text in full color, print media solutions providers like Quad/Graphics have the potential to deliver targeted, relevant communications that increase the response their customers receive to print products. The technology also provides variable-data text and images that better integrate with offset-printed color content.

HP is showing the HP Color Print Module at the Ipex 2010 graphic arts tradeshow this week and expects to make the imager available later this year. HP is working with original equipment manufacturers for the direct mail and other markets to develop new products that take advantage of the HP Color Print Module's full-color printing capabilities.

More information on the HP Color Print Module and other new solutions from HP at Ipex is available at www.hp.com/go/IPEX, at the www.hp.com/go/HPatIPEX2010 online press kit or through the HP Graphic Arts Twitter feed.
