Xerox Debuts New Dual-Engine Design, Turbocharges Nuvera Digital Printing System
Company to demonstrate industry’s fastest cut-sheet printer, cap cadence of recent roll outs at Graph Expo Show
ROCHESTER, N.Y., 13 Oct. 2006 -- Gearing up for the printing industry's largest annual exhibition in North America, Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) will cap a cadence of recent product introductions by demonstrating a dual-print engine design that sets a new speed record for duplex black-and-white cut-sheet printing systems.
Xerox will take the wraps off the new system at Graph Expo next week in Chicago, where the company is staging a 15,000-square-foot exhibit of digital technology and software.
Operating at 288 impressions per minute - 144 two-sided pages - the company's new twin-engine technology makes the Xerox Nuvera™ Digital Production System run twice as fast with image quality that is equivalent to offset printing standards. This digital duplex production system, which features two Xerox Nuvera engines physically connected together in one system, can produce books and brochures at a resolution of 4800 x 600 dots per inch, the highest of any black-and-white digital production system on the market.
A new Xerox innovation, called "Pass Through Programming," keeps the system running even if one of the engines needs service, providing maximum productivity and uptime for commercial print operations and in-house printing facilities. The printing system, based on technology developed by researchers in Xerox labs in Webster, N.Y, and the Palo Alto Research Center, is supported by more than 50 filed patents. It will launch in the second quarter of 2007 in North America and Europe.
In addition to developing dual-engine technology for the Xerox Nuvera digital system, new finishing modules are now available on the Xerox Nuvera 144, making it possible for print providers to automatically staple and stack large quantities of printed documents including booklets, technical manuals and promotional material.
The new offerings are the latest in a series of initiatives designed to strengthen Xerox's leadership in the graphic communications market and help print providers profit from high-growth trends associated with color and black-and-white digital printing, workflow software, and personalized communications.
"Digitization, personalization and collaboration are megatrends in the graphic communications industry and beyond," Xerox Chairman and CEO Anne Mulcahy said in remarks prepared for Xerox's Premier Partner Congress, a gathering of leading printing customers at Graph Expo. "We're determined to stay on the right side of those trends, and we're putting our resources behind the fastest-growing and most profitable opportunities."
In the days leading up to Graph Expo, Xerox has:
- Announced a $54 million acquisition of XMPie, a leading provider of variable-information software. Its offerings enable cross-media personalized marketing programs that bridge the paper and electronic worlds and deliver increased return on investment for customers.
- Launched the DocuTech™ 180 Highlight Color system with finishing capabilities that open up new markets for print professionals, enabling them to produce books, brochures and catalogs with highlight color. A custom-blended color technology will be available early next year that can, for example, help print providers produce printed material that offers a match to a client's logo. Research shows that printing materials with black plus one additional color calls attention to relevant information, such as special promotional offers and payment deadlines.
- Enhanced its flagship Xerox Xerox iGen3 Digital Production Press with imaging software that automatically improves the quality of original photos and helps ensure the best images for documents such as full-color books, greeting cards and direct-mail pieces.
- Introduced technology and workflow software that make it possible to quickly and economically print customized teacher's edition textbooks in color. These books give teachers the content they need to meet state- and region-specific education guidelines. They are suited for production on digital color printers because they are produced in about one-twentieth the volume of student textbooks.
In addition to spotlighting these recent moves, Xerox will showcase its full portfolio of production and commercial printing technology, services, and business support tools. At Graph Expo, Xerox will:
- Unveil the Horizon ColorWorks 5000 Booklet Maker for the 50-page-per-minute Xerox DocuColor 5000 Digital Press. It includes several in-line booklet-making features such as creasing, stitching, folding, stacking and three-sided trimming.
- Launch a high-capacity oversize sheet feeder for the Xerox 4110™ digital family of printers. The feeder enhances overall productivity of the Xerox 4110 by adding 2,000 sheets of up to 13" x 19.2" paper.
- Showcase the Xerox iGen3 Digital Production Press with an in-line ultraviolet coater that applies a permanent sealed coating on documents.
- Demonstrate its continuing advancements between Xerox FreeFlow and Heidelberg's Prinect architectures with a workflow solution that allows customers to easily integrate and direct jobs between digital and offset printing technology.

Bitstream to be One of the First to Demonstrate Pageflex Software for VDP and Cross Media Marketing Campaigns on This Exciting New Press at Graph Expo 2006
Graph Expo 2006
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bitstream Inc., (NASDAQ: BITS, http://www.bitstream.com/ and http://www.pageflex.com/) announced today that through its partnership with Canon USA, Inc. (NYSE:CAJ), Bitstream’s Pageflex will demonstrate one of the first cross media and variable data printing applications for the new Canon imagePRESS C7000VP digital press at GRAPH EXPO, October 15-18, in Chicago, Illinois. In the Canon booth (#1253), Canon will be using the Pageflex Persona™ Cross Media Suite software and the PPML output standard to demonstrate the production printing of personalized medical appointment reminder cards on the new imagePRESS C7000VP.
Anna Chagnon, Bitstream President and CEO, comments, “We are excited to be one of the first software vendors to drive the new Canon imagePRESS C7000VP. The Pageflex products offer the most robust and versatile software available for producing all forms of variable communications. It is very appropriate that at Graph Expo, the major printing event of the year, attendees will be able to witness first hand the positive impact that the pairing of these two technologies can bring to their businesses and customer bases.”
“The Canon imagePRESS C7000VP digital press is going to be a revolutionary product, representing one of the largest R&D investments to date for Canon,” said Sam Yoshida, director and general manager, Product Marketing, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Partnering with key digital production solution providers, like Bitstream, will help complement the imagePRESS C7000VP and help print providers better meet the demanding needs of their customers.”
Cross Media Demonstration
Representatives from Pageflex will be available in the Canon booth to demonstrate how Pageflex Persona can be used to design a print document—in this case an appointment reminder postcard—with variable components. Pageflex Persona will produce a run of customized postcards in PPML format, which will then be printed four-up on the imagePRESS C7000VP digital press in the Canon booth. Pageflex Persona also will be used to produce a follow-up customized HTML email using the same project components and data file. Attendees will be able to watch every step of this process and walk away with a printed sheet of postcards.
PPML is an XML-based industry standard for high-volume personalized digital printing developed by PODi (http://www.podi.org/) with active participation by Bitstream and Canon. It allows personalized print to be more flexible, easier to use and more affordable to produce.
Pageflex Persona Cross Media Suite
Pageflex Persona is a desktop application incorporating award-winning variable data and cross-media functionality from industry-leader Bitstream. Xerox Enhances DocuTech 180 Highlight Color Printing System
Custom-blended color technology to expand highlight color printing choices
ROCHESTER, N.Y., 12 Oct. 2006 -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) has enhanced its DocuTech™ 180 Highlight Color system with two new features that open the door to creating new and different types of print jobs and significantly expand the breadth of colors that can be printed. The improvements will help print providers grow their business, drive revenue and increase profits.
The DocuTech 180 Highlight Color System - the world's fastest cut-sheet highlight color printer at 180 pages per minute - now has finishing options that enable print providers to produce high-volume publishing documents such as books, booklets and catalogs. Previously, the system specialized in printing transactional documents such as invoices and statements. Also, Xerox will be able to create custom-blended colors for the printer so print providers can offer more choices to their clients, such as a color match for a client's logo to strengthen brand identity and recognition.
The enhancements to the Xerox digital highlight color system will be showcased at Graph Expo, the printing industry's largest annual exhibition in North America, held Oct. 15-18 in Chicago.
Highlight color printers - which produce documents in black plus one other color - can help make documents more effective by drawing attention to relevant information such as sale prices and discounts, the balance due on an invoice, warning labels, or a sidebar story in an employee booklet.
According to a recent survey conducted by INTERQUEST, a leading market and technology research and consulting firm, digital spot color (highlight color) print volume will grow by 11 percent per year through 2009.
"Our studies show that manuals and educational books represent a major growth opportunity for highlight color digital printing," said Gilles Biscos, president of INTERQUEST. "The Xerox DocuTech 180 Highlight Color System - with its new finishing options and custom-blended colors - will provide printers the ability to run a wide range of highlight color applications intended for offset, opening up new business opportunities and increasing revenue and profits."
Equipped for Publishing
Thanks to new finishing options - stacking, stitching and tape binding - the DocuTech 180 Highlight Color system can now produce high-volume publishing jobs such as brochures and direct-mail pieces, in addition to its ability to create transactional print pieces. The enhanced digital printing system will be particularly useful for commercial print and quick print shops, in-plant operations and marketing communication companies that want to add one color at almost the same cost as black-and-white printing.
The DocuTech 180 Highlight Color System also has a new two-tray page inserter that automatically assembles jobs with pre-printed black-and-white or full-color inserts into one document, eliminating the need to collate the pages by hand. The enhanced system has several paper drawers to hold a variety of paper, making it easy for professional printers to build one document with many different kinds of paper in it, such as marketing brochures and newsletters.
In addition to the Xerox finishing options, the digital highlight color press will support the Xerox DS5000 High Capacity Stacker and third-party finishing devices that help print providers create a variety of documents like professionally-bound books, booklets and manuals.
Expanded Color Palette
Available early next year on all Xerox digital highlight color systems - the DocuTech 180, DocuTech 128 and DocuTech 155 - Xerox's custom-blended colors will allow print providers to offer a near-infinite number of highlight colors. Print providers will be able to select the color they want duplicated and, similar to a custom-blended paint, Xerox engineers will create the "recipe" for the color in a lab. Xerox also added magenta as a standard color on its entire line of digital highlight color systems. The other standard colors are red, cardinal red, green, blue, royal blue and cyan. Yellow will be available as a standard color by the end of 2006.
Image quality on Xerox digital highlight color systems is the best in the industry, printing at 2400 x 600 dpi resolution for black and white and 600 x 600 dpi for color.
Pricing and Availability
The DocuTech 180 Highlight Color System with finishing options is immediately available through Xerox sales representatives in North America and Europe at a list price of $479,500, including a Xerox FreeFlow DocuSP server.

Nipson Believes Technology and Market Convergence of Digital Printing at Tipping Point
Robert Stabler, President of Nipson America, Offers Insights at GRAPH EXPO® 2006
Chicago, IL – October 15, 2006 – Technological advancements and increased market demand will lead to a predominance of digital printing production in most operations in the near future, according to Robert Stabler, president of Nipson America. Nipson is a leading manufacturer of high-speed black-and-white digital printing presses and Stabler sees the wide-spread adoption of digital soon becoming a reality in mainstream print production environments. At GRAPH EXPO 2006 (booth # 4259), Nipson is demonstrating the unsurpassed combination of speed, print quality, cost and flexibility that is contributing to this trend.
“The convergence of market demand and technology developments is bringing us to a tipping point in digital adoption already,” remarks Stabler. “Cost per page continues to fall due to productivity improvements of over 10% per year, while print quality improves and demand for target printing increases. At Nipson, we are at the leading edge of this change, connecting market demand with technological possibilities. This is the result of continuous investment and enhancement in speed, print quality, and total cost of ownership.”
Stabler offers additional insight at the show regarding this changeover:
- Digital speeds and quality have been steadily improving. What is different at this juncture?
There is always a critical point when technology moves beyond niche markets. With digital black and white production, the speed, quality, and cost of consumables have all reached benchmarks that allow them to be adopted effectively into most print operations. In addition, market demand for targeted print runs in many different industries is driving the need. It is the convergence of these two factors that makes this point in digital development different.
- Are there particular markets that will be most affected by this change?
Direct mail, transactional, and book printing are all industries that are already seeing a level of convergence. The changeover in technology of direct mail and transactional markets is primarily occurring because of speed and productivity increases. With print, book-on-demand and specialty applications, the integration of digital technology into traditional operations is taking place because of vast improvements in digital print quality. For all of these markets, the cost is coming down and this is leading to greater adoption industry-wide.
Nipson has users in these industries that employ the speed and flexibility of our technology to integrate into finishing, labeling and offset printing equipment. These same industries are also noticing increased demand for more targeted print runs.
- How is Nipson postured to take advantage of market developments?
Nipson’s technology is based around magnetography and non-heat flash fusion. This combination of technologies makes our systems particularly well suited for integration with finishing equipment and traditional printing technologies. Also, our technology is able to sustain high speeds without degrading print quality or affecting the flexibility or integration. Nipson is well positioned to continue to serve this market since we expect the speed of our technology to continue to steadily increase while other technologies plateau.
VaryPress at Graph Expo
At GRAPH EXPO 2006, Nipson’s VaryPress 400, running at 125 meters per minute (415 ft/m), will be demonstrated producing a mix of technical manuals, direct mail, print on demand, transactional, and specialty applications. The systems will be integrated with finishing equipment from EMT International to show the flexibility of Nipson’s technology to effectively serve a wide range of markets.
About Nipson
Based in Dartford, Kent, with R&D and manufacturing headquarters in Belfort, France and with subsidiaries in France, North America, Germany, the UK, and Italy, Nipson provides some of the most cost-effective, flexible digital black and white printing equipment in the industry today. Companies in publishing, print-on-demand, direct mail, transactional, financial, and security printing all benefit from Nipson’s combination of production throughput, reliability, and flexibility.
Traditional hurdles in digital print such as linked offset to digital configurations, inline tipped on cards, printing on plastics, papers, and foils, as well as books-on-demand and newspapers-on-demand are now commercial, profitable, and real-world testimonials to Nipson’s leadership in heavy-dutydigital printing.
In addition to relying on a strong direct sales force in selected areas, Nipson also markets its products and services through a worldwide network of qualified value added distributors, covering more than 50 countries.

Mail Operators to See the Only Flexible High-Speed Cutter on the Market at Graph Expo
STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, Pitney Bowes announced that it has increased productivity input for mail operations by 44 percent with the debut of the most flexible high-productivity cutter on the market, the HPI-72C. At 72,000 cut sheets per hour, the cutter performs two-up continuous roll-fed or fan-folded applications.
Pitney Bowes will demonstrate the new HPI-72C input integrated with leading-edge mail and document solutions at Graph Expo® and Converting Expo®, America's number one printing and graphics communications event, held in Chicago, IL, October 15-18, 2006. Pitney Bowes is located at Booth 2063.
The 72K cutter has servo-powered technology and can be integrated with Pitney Bowes APS™ Advanced Productivity Series and FPS™ Flexible Productivity Series inserting systems. With its speed and flexibility, this latest innovation is significant for mail operations with high page count applications, such as telcos and utilities, insurance and financial firms, because they can expect a significant increase in the production of their input.
"We've removed a major speed bump that slows mail production. "Clients have asked us for speed, easy set-up, high productivity and -- more importantly -- consistency. The Pitney Bowes 72K cutter delivers on each of these key performance demands."

Kodak will feature innovative new solutions in commercial print, packaging, direct mail and TransPromo, as well as exciting new capabilities in the KODAK MARKETMOVER program. As visitors move through the exhibit, they'll learn how KODAK solutions can enable print service providers to produce industry leading marketing services and collateral through the use of an illustrative campaign for a typical retailer named "Sport Shop."
"At Graph Expo, we'll spotlight applications that emphasize why print endures stronger than ever as a highly effective medium for meeting a range of marketing, communication and business challenges," said Kevin Joyce, Managing Director, United States and Canada Region, Kodak's Graphic Communications Group. "Through the Kodak exhibit, print providers will see how print can help their clients create marketing campaigns that are unique and relevant to recipients, and therefore deliver results. And Kodak's innovative solutions make it easier and faster to produce these jobs, increasing their shops' volume, productivity and profitability."

It also includes a job management feature to track jobs from receipt of files through to proofing, approval and platemaking.
Proofing and Color Center
The commercial print and packaging areas will feature a proofing and color center, with solutions for consistent communication and delivery of accurate color across a full range of proofing technologies including the KODAK VERIS digital proofer, the KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet proofer, the KODAK APPROVAL digital color imaging system and KODAK COLORFLOW technology architecture.
The next generation KODAK VERIS digital proofer, which helps customers achieve superior color accuracy and proofing productivity, will be shown for the first time in the United States at Graph Expo. Direct Mail and TransPromo
KODAK VERSAMARK inkjet printing solutions are featured in the Direct Mail and TransPromo areas of the booth. High volume and variable data print applications for direct mail, transactional documents and TransPromo applications will comprise another area of Kodak's booth at Graph Expo. All of the applications will be produced using process color in a 4/4 configuration driven by the KODAK VERSAMARK CS600 system controller-the latest V series controller with support for PostScript, PDF and PPML.
