GMC PrintNet Connect Web Services Software To Debut At PRINT ‘05

July 26, 2005 – Appenzell, Switzerland and Boston, MA – GMC Software AG—the leading global provider of open standards document design, composition and production solutions for the service bureau, commercial print, finance, insurance, utility and telecom industries—will debut their recently released PrintNet Connect Web Services software suite at Booth # 6336 during PRINT ’05 at Chicago’s McCormick Place, from September 9 through 15. GMC staff will be on hand to demonstrate how PrintNet Connect provides a powerful, seamless, fully integrated solution for Web-based application integration. Organizations managing myriad documents, records and other information across disparate platforms and systems can now bring them all into the production process, regardless of their source.

About PrintNet Connect

PrintNet Connect software is an innovative solution for the seamless production of both printed and electronic documents for businesses that are implementing a Web Services strategy. Companies that implement a Web Services strategy can maximize the benefits of standards-based enterprise computing, document production and both internal and external communications. By implementing Web Services applications into processes such as high-volume document production workflow—using PrintNet Connect—organizations can easily and quickly respond to new business opportunities.

According to Rene Mueller, CEO of GMC Software AG, “PrintNet Connect enables a robust Web-based document production system that can lead to improved communication and faster, more cost-effective production processes. Both enterprises and commercial operations achieve higher efficiency through process automation, job consolidation and better asset utilization.  As more organizations establish Web Services environments, PrintNet Connect fills the important role of making seamless document production available on a Web Services platform.”

Integrated print and web presentment from a Single Platform

PrintNet Connect works in concert with GMC PrintNet T software to drive multiple document-related applications from a single platform. Unlike some other Web applications, PrintNet users do not need separate platforms for Web and print based documents, variable data or statement processing and presentment. The PrintNet T platform encompasses all of the resources to compose and drive production of both printed and electronic documents and statements. There is no need to buy separate products for print versus web applications. Since work is driven from one central application, users don’t need to understand the platform or application behind it, yet they can leverage its power for greater productivity.

When PrintNet Connect is integrated into a corporate production environment, users can generate everything they need without having to call on IT resources. Branch offices and agents have easy, immediate access to document generation and production tools for greater efficiency and better customer service. Since the PrintNet application is transparent to users, it does not require any special skills and can be accessed via a Web browser; and its capabilities extend to all levels of users in geographically dispersed locations.

Benefits for Corporations and service bureaus alike

Both corporate enterprises and commercial service bureaus benefit from the convenience of Web-based communication provided by PrintNet Connect-enabled Web Services. Enterprises and commercial operations can use their existing infrastructure and processes in more efficient and more productive ways, while providing an attractive alternative to manual operations. Aside from the advantage of being available to users possessing minimal technical skills, features such as automated template calling and background processing significantly improve consistency, while giving users more flexibility to do their jobs.

Using PrintNet Connect, service bureaus can offer more convenience and value to customers through Web-based workflow. Corporations can develop tools such as direct mail or letter templates and use Web Services to make these tools available for their customers for the creation of customized materials. With PrintNet Connect, a typical user can have the ability to use a subset of PrintNet T from a Web page.  From a user’s perspective, it’s simply a matter of making a request and receiving an answer—the behind-the-process functionality of PrintNet T is transparent. Even IT personnel don’t require PrintNet experience because once set up, the process works automatically.

Through PrintNet Connect Web Services, users can access the full functionality of PrintNet T, including previewing a PDF, image, or HTML file. The software can define a workflow to perform functions such as automatically sending a proof to the user, and it can balance loads automatically to ensure that jobs submitted are sent to the best available resource. PrintNet Connect enables remote calling of the PrintNet T server, which in turn activates any number of actions and processes related to document production. Communication is defined in terms of XML request / response messages; and XML messages can be received through a SOAP protocol via http request or via J2EE environments such as IBM WebSphere Message One, BEA Weblogic and Microsoft.NET.

Service bureaus can now embrace small accounts that previously would not have been economically feasible. Handling these customers via a Web page template provides commercial operations with a new revenue stream that doesn’t drain margins. Small jobs can be commingled for better postal rates, and the service bureau does not tie up staff with smaller, less profitable jobs. The result is a more streamlined, user-friendly and profitable document production environment, while enhancing overall customer satisfaction for all enterprise related communications.

BÖWE BELL + HOWELL introduces Print Stream Optimization – a revolutionary breakthrough in high-volume document processing

Solution combines software and hardware to dramatically increase throughput 50 percent on average

Durham, N.C., Aug. 22, 2005, BÖWE BELL + HOWELL, the world’s leading provider of document processing and postal solutions, announces the introduction of their innovative solution for high-speed processing that will revolutionize the mail processing industry. Called Print Stream Optimization (PSO), the solution combines software and production equipment to intelligently manage and manipulate a print stream in order to optimize equipment utilization while achieving maximum postal discounts.

Print Stream Optimization is a patent-pending solution that uses advanced software algorithms to change the order of documents in print streams before they are printed, and dramatically improves the throughput of downstream production finishing equipment. This solution will have resounding implications in high-volume mailing operations such as banks, insurance companies, credit card issuers, brokerage firms, telecommunications companies and other utilities.

Initial applications of Print Stream Optimization have produced increases in throughput around 50 percent on average. Under the right conditions, PSO has the potential to more than double productivity, depending on the characteristics of a mailing. With sets having high page counts, the combination of multiple input channels with PSO can further “optimize” utilization for even greater productivity. The result is dramatic improvements in production throughput per hour with virtually no downside .

According to Roger Spitzig, BÖWE BELL + HOWELL vice president and general manager of Software Business Solutions, “Print Stream Optimization is the biggest breakthrough in productivity that the industry has experienced in years. Companies are able to not only complete existing work in less time, but use available resources to take on additional jobs and generate new revenue streams.”

The initial client that implemented PSO was so pleased with the results, they recognized BÖWE BELL + HOWELL with an award as one of their “suppliers of the year” in the category of Creative Cost Management Solutions, a distinction highlighted by a congratulatory advertisement in The Wall Street Journal. The client has since commissioned additional PSO systems for their other mail operations.

“It’s really about doing more with less,” said Sarah Elliott, BÖWE BELL + HOWELL’s software business manager. “Our team’s drive to increase customer throughput has provided tremendous value to an operation’s bottom line.”

BÖWE BELL + HOWELL will be demonstrating Print Stream Optimization at the PRINT 05 exhibition Sept. 9 through Sept. 15 at McCormick Place in Chicago. Visit BÖWE BELL + HOWELL at Booth #2073 in the convention hall to see firsthand this innovative solution.

XEROX TO DEMONSTRATE PROFIT-BUILDING TECHNOLOGY, SERVICES IN LARGEST ALL-DIGITAL DISPLAY AT PRINT 05

New products, workflow tools, support programs bolster broadest range of digital offerings for printing industry

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 30, 2005 – Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) will demonstrate the profit-building power of its latest high-end printing technology, along with new workflow tools that streamline the printing process and support programs that help grow print volume and revenue, in the largest display of all-digital technology at Print 05.

At the trade show, which starts next week and is held every four years in North America as the printing industry’s largest international event, Xerox will showcase the industry’s broadest range of digital offerings and feature more than 50 high-speed color and black-and-white printing products — including the Xerox iGen3®, DocuColor®, Phaser®, Xerox Nuvera™, DocuTech® and DocuPrint® families.  Xerox will also highlight an expanded portfolio of workflow tools that streamline the process that print shops use to produce jobs such as digital books, personalized color catalogs and manuals.

“Digital printing is continuing to gain print industry market share at an accelerated rate, creating new applications and taking revenue from offset,” said Bill Lamparter, president, PrintCom Consulting Group.  “With the company’s current line and with new offerings, Xerox will demonstrate a comprehensive digital presence at the show in terms of overall size and scope.”

Attendees visiting Xerox’s 35,000-square-foot, two-story booth will learn about the company’s latest product and workflow announcements and see how Xerox is creating new business opportunities that impact their bottom line. From a second-floor catwalk, visitors can view how a print job is produced from prepress, through the printing process, to a professionally finished piece.

“For more than two decades, Xerox has revolutionized the digital production printing industry — and we will continue to lead at Print 05,” said Quincy Allen, president, Xerox Production Systems Group.  “We’re not just showing the latest digital printing technology. We are also giving customers the information they need to implement the technology to grow their businesses and increase profits.”

The Xerox booth will be divided into seven zones that address critical topics for commercial printers, quick printers and in-plant print shops. The seven zones are:

---Print on Demand – Print on demand automates the production process, reduces turnaround time and eliminates inventory costs by providing the flexibility to print jobs only when they are needed.  For example, print providers can quickly produce marketing brochures in short runs as products, services and special offers change.
---Personalizing for Profit – Visitors will learn how to create effective personalized direct-marketing campaigns using customized communications that increase response rates.  Using Xerox digital printing systems, workflow software and integrated finishing options, customers can create full-color, professional materials, including brochures, invoices and signage that target a specific audience with the most relevant marketing information and improve the return on their marketing investments.  The zone will also highlight how Xerox digital printing systems and automated workflow solutions are helping transactional printers merge information from various databases to create effective billing and marketing pieces in one document.
---Book Solutions – Print providers can generate new revenue streams by offering digital book publishing, and the booth will feature continuous-feed printers and monochrome and color presses producing books and color covers.   Also at Print 05, Xerox will announce the winner of its “Aspiring Authors” contest at an event featuring Xerox Chairman and CEO Anne Mulcahy; Bob Young, founder of LuLu.com, a provider of print-on-demand books; and Maureen Corrigan, book reviewer for National Public Radio’s “Fresh Air.”  The contest attracted hundreds of applicants nationwide, and the winning author will receive $5,000 and 100 copies of his or her book.

---Offset and Digital Integration – Xerox experts will be available to work with customers on an individual basis, showing them how to build their businesses by integrating their current offset production workflow with Xerox digital workflows using FreeFlow™ software. Xerox continues to automate production printing processes to make it easier for printers to add digital printing to their operations while leveraging their existing technology.
---Agency and Design Services – Attendees will learn how to improve their printed communications from creation to production and see the advantages of digital printing, including image quality that is comparable to offset and the benefits of adding personalization.  The area will feature products and insight from industry partners such as Adobe, Creo, EFI, Pantone, Scanvec Amiable, XMPie and the Parsons School of Design.
---Wide Format Solutions – Many print providers are adding wide-format printing equipment as a new revenue source, expanding the applications they can offer to their customers including posters, architectural drawings and outside signage.  The zone will show how color and black-and-white wide-format printers successfully work in conjunction with narrow-format equipment, capitalizing on increasing convergence in the print industry.
---ProfitAccelerator Resources – The zone features support programs that help customers maximize digital technology investments through the use of sales, marketing, finance and production tools. For example, customers can use a financial modeling program to help them justify the purchase of digital production equipment by showing which applications are most profitable.

ProfitAccelerator Theater

In the booth’s “ProfitAccelerator Theater,” industry experts will present a wide range of topics. Session titles include:

---“Making money in digital print: I did it, and so can you,” presented by Roger Gimbel, president, Roger P. Gimbel & Associates.
---“Planning for profits: Focus on the bottom line,” presented by Frank Kanonik, president, DigitalPrintInfo.

---“Hiring and managing a high-performance sales team,” presented by Joseph Rickard, president, IntellectiveSolutions.

---“Partnering for success: The creative alliance,” presented by Roy Zucca, adjunct professor, Parsons School of Design and principal, CertiFyle.

---“Building relationships: your key to long-term success,” presented by Peter Muir, president, Bizucate Inc.

The hour-long programs run daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m., and Xerox will hold a drawing for an Apple iPod after each session.

Customer Awards Showcase

The winning applications of the Printing Innovation with Xerox Imaging Awards, which recognize excellence in digital printing, will be on display in the PIXI Gallery in the booth. The awards highlight innovative personalized materials, short-run color materials, monochrome materials, digital books and manuals. They also recognize the partnerships between the clients, creative professionals and printers who are involved in producing these high-value applications.

Itasca, IL, August 30, 2005 --- Xeikon, a Punch Graphix brand, will print live production variable data direct mail jobs on its flagship product- the Xeikon 5000- at Print 05 and Converting 05.

According to Kristof Vereenooghe, President and CEO, Punch Graphix Americas, "Our Xeikon 5000 system will print real revenue-producing business at Print 05 and Converting 05. The fulfillment of the jobs is automated in one complete production line. The entire line will consist of a Xeikon 5000 digital color press along with an inline finishing unit with two- sided UV-coating, die-cutting, stacking and batching. The production flow starts with the powerful X-800 Digital Front-End which resides as a virtual printer on the Expresscopy.com network. The jobs are simply transferred over the network and the finished pieces will be picked up by US Postal Service from the show floor for delivery into the postal stream. "As we will print Expresscopy.com's actual business at the show, no one will be allowed to take these direct mail pieces from our booth," adds Kristof with a smile.

The Punch Graphix Americas booth will also house a second Xeikon 5000 with offline folding equipment, which will print an equally interesting application -- self-mailers printed on pre- perfed stock with co-adhesive glue and remoist strip. This is a similar application to one in production at Inter-State Studio, Inc., another successful Xeikon customer. In addition, the second Xeikon 5000 will also run PPML / Variable Data jobs in conjunction with the PODi tour and Xeikon's front-end partners as well as promotional Point-of-Sale display materials.

Standard and Horizon Bring JDF Spark to Post Press at Print 05

Leveraging the Power of JDF Across the Bindery

(Andover, Massachusetts) -- Standard Finishing Systems and Horizon International will demonstrate broad JDF capability and interoperability at Print 05, with two live JDF workflows organized in collaboration with six industry-leading partners, and over sixteen different solutions driven by the new JDF-ready i2i Bindery Control System.

“Our goal is to show printers and trade binders how advanced digital control in the bindery can improve their bottom line” says Standard Finishing Systems Managing Director David Reny. “The Horizon i2i system brings post-press automation, productivity, and efficiency to any finishing environment, and it harnesses the full power of JDF across the bindery when customers are ready to implement a fully-integrated workflow.”

The Standard Horizon Bindery Automation Theater will feature two live JDF print production workflows in cooperation with industry leaders EFI, Hiflex, Kodak, Komori, Ryobi, and Screen. Saddlestitching and perfect binding jobs will flow from creation to finishing in fully-integrated JDF-driven workflows, to show real-world interoperability, cost savings, and other benefits. When these jobs enter the bindery, they’ll be managed by the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System.

In one workflow, the Hiflex MIS system will create a saddlestitching job and route JDF data to the Kodak Prinergy workflow management system for pre-press and to the Ryobi Smart Net color printing system and 750 series press. The JDF post press data will be sent to the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System, where finishing parameters will be consumed. After being printed in the Ryobi booth, the job will be delivered to the Standard Horizon booth, where i2i will issue JDF job tickets for the APC-66D paper cutter and the StitchLiner 5500 sadlestitching system, for fully automated set-up in accordance with parameters in the JDF file. These finishers will report a range of production statistics in real time over a network to the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System, which will relay the data back to the Hiflex MIS system for closed-loop reporting and cross-enterprise visibility.

The other live workflow will be a perfect bound job. The job specification will be entered on the EFI Hagen OA management system, and then sent via JDF to Komori's JDF-enabled workstation, K-Station. Screen Ritecontrol will create and submit the JDF file for press and post press. After printing on the Komori Lithrone 40SP, the sheets will be sent to the Standard Horizon booth, where the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System will consume the JDF post press data, calculate the necessary settings, and issue a JDF job ticket to convey the set-ups to the automated Horizon AFC-744 folder for signature folding, and the automated 9-clamp Horizon CABS4000 system for perfect binding and three-knife trimming. Real-time production data will be captured and reported to the Hagen OA management information system.

The Horizon i2i Bindery Control System provides feature-rich bindery control, including bar-coded job tickets for automated machine set-up; the ability to save and recall recurring jobs; a job scheduling planner; and the capture of production statistics for accounting and analysis. Job status and work-in-progress on all i2i-connected machines can be monitored in real time from a central console for better-informed scheduling, staff planning, and equipment utilization. When i2i is integrated upstream, this data is also visible to customer service, estimating, production planning, and management. Legacy bindery equipment that is not i2i-networked can also be included, allowing cross-bindery data collection and a complete management window into bindery operations.

Standard will also be a focal point for the CIP4-sponsored Post Press Interoperability Trail, which will direct visitors to leading graphic arts suppliers providing JDF-enabled solutions. Six of the eight trail stops will be active participants with Standard Horizon in live JDF workflows.

In addition to the production workflows featured in the Bindery Automation Theater, the Horizon i2i system will be using JDF data to drive automated set-ups and capture production data on over sixteen different Standard Horizon folding, cutting, perfect binding, collating, bookletmaking, and saddlestitching solutions located throughout the Standard Horizon booth. Even without JDF control, these systems provide quick, accurate changeovers using advanced touchscreen operation and servomotor-control for end-to-end automated set-ups.

U.S. ARMY MOBILE PRINTING UNIT TO DISPLAY LATEST COMBAT ZONE PRINTING CAPABILITY AT PRINT 05

Reston, VA - Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC®) today announced that it will host a special display of U.S. Army mobile printing capability at the upcoming PRINT® 05 & CONVERTINGSM 05, September 9 - 15, 2005 at McCormick Place South, Chicago, IL. This educational display of 3,000 square feet, will feature a U.S. Army Psychological Operations mobile printing team, using a system called the Deployable Print Production Center (DPPC), consisting of a work shelter, mounted on a HumVee, towing an equipment trailer.

The display will offer live demonstrations of the U.S. Army's on-site mobile printing capability. The system, equipped with operating presses, is used to print various psychological operations leaflets, flyers, and communiqués for foreign audiences in the field.

"We're particularly pleased to host this special display at this year's international event, as it sheds some light on an area of military service that doesn't get a lot of attention in the media. It shows that printing is still a key communications tool globally, and that it can be used to touch our lives in ways most people don't think about very often," noted Regis J. Delmontagne, President of the Graphic Arts Show Company, the show's producer. "We're glad the U.S. Department of Defense has seen the value in displaying such material to the printing public. Additionally, it shows that printing as a trade is still a very viable and useful career path, no matter where you start your career," he added.

The 15-year-old unit has been employed by military battalions based out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; Joliet, Illinois; and Los Alamitos, California; and is assigned to the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne). It is capable of traveling to field locations on a moment's notice not only to provide communications support for forward troops, but also to support communications operations of an overt nature as part of the overall battle plan. The equipment, including a high-speed Risograph Duplicator, PC graphics platform using Corel Draw®, high-quality color scanner, color LaserJet printer, and cutting equipment, has been slightly modified to meet U.S. Army specification for this type of activity, including shock mounting for portability.

The unit is completely portable, and includes its own power source in the form of a generator for use in remote areas, and a portable heater for use in cold climates, to heat the tent, equipment and its occupants. The RISO units used in the unit can produce over 1,800 2 ¾ x 5 ½ four over four leaflets an hour, and
