Océ Wins Encore MUST SEE EM and Worth-a-Look Awards in Color and Monochrome Production Printing and Display Graphics at Graph Expo
October 5, 2010 – Chicago, IL – Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, today announced it has won several honors for printing innovation at the Graph Expo conference in Chicago. The Océ JetStream® 1000 and Océ VarioPrint® 6320 Ultra systems were named Encore "MUST SEE EM"® and Encore Worth-a-Look award winners in Production Color and Production Black and White respectively, while the Océ Arizona® 550 XT UV curable flatbed printer was honored with a "Worth-a-Look"® Award.
The MUST SEE 'EM recognition program, part of the EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK® Conference, highlights Graph Expo’s most unique, innovative and compelling products and services. Winners were announced Saturday, October 2, immediately following the EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK Conference. The MUST SEE 'EM Awards, sponsored by PrintCom Consulting Group, are presented to products and technologies that exemplify compelling innovation in the graphic communications industry. The EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK Conference precedes the Print 09 show, the most comprehensive prepress, printing, package printing, converting, mailing and fulfillment and digital equipment trade show in America.
"We are very pleased to see our market innovation recognized again with honors in very competitive categories against hundreds of entries. These awards validate our commitment to providing solutions that meet the highest quality and productivity standards," said Joseph D. Skrzypczak, President and CEO, Océ North America.
Océ JetStream 1000 System Honored as Production Color System
The compact Océ JetStream 1000 high speed inkjet system offers a unique combination of CMYK printing, integrated Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) capability and the smallest inkjet footprint in the industry. The Océ JetStream 1000 system is the first continuous feed inkjet printer in its speed class offering full width single engine perfecting press capabilities, printing both sides of the paper using one engine. The system produces up to 1,074 letter-size images per minute at 600x600 dpi, and features 20.4" print and 20.5" paper widths, and handles monthly print volumes of up to 20 million impressions. This self-contained system uses floor space more efficiently than competitive devices, with a footprint 20 to 60 percent smaller than other inkjet systems in its class. As a result, customers can enter the production color arena without any significant impact on limited floor space. The flexible full color web press handles transaction, direct mail, books and transpromo applications equally well. Users can apply a combination of MICR or other specialty inks, along with CMYK printing to support the widest range of business opportunities. The system is based on core technologies associated with the Océ JetStream platform, including Océ DigiDot® inkjet technology and inks, and Océ SRA® MP controller architecture.
Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra System Recognized for Black & White Production
The Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra cutsheet printer is the world’s fastest, most productive digital perfecting system. This high-speed system clocks in at 306 8.5"x11" letter-size prints per minute (ppm) (A4-size at 314 ppm), extending Océ’s leadership into a new 300+ ppm segment. With its unique combination of speed, throughput, reliability and generous input/output capacity, the Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra blazes through heavy black & white volumes, so print professionals can complete more jobs within ever-tighter windows. These high speeds, near-perfect image registration, excellent halftones, flexible media tray pulls and online interface for multiple finishing options make the system ideal for short-run book printing. Océ VarioPrint 6320 Ultra systems can quickly switch between transaction and on-demand publishing jobs, turning print providers into versatile one-stop resources. With up to eight hours of job queuing and scheduling, up to four hours of non-stop performance, and support for monthly print volumes up to 10 million images, print operations complete more work in less time, minimizing after-hours shifts and overtime. Océ ScreenPoint technology quality control and Océ open platform integration bring greater productivity to a variety of production environments.
"Worth a Look" Winner Excels at Display Graphics Versatility
The Océ Arizona 550 GT UV curable flatbed printer joins the award-winning Océ Arizona Series at the high-productivity end of the range. This model is capable of POP-quality prints at 433 square feet per hour (or thirteen four- by eight-foot boards an hour). An Express print mode is available with print speeds of up to 721 square feet per hour (or 22 four- by eight-foot boards per hour), nearly three times higher than the fastest print speed available on the previously-released Océ Arizona 350 GT printer. The Océ Arizona 550 GT printer utilizes Océ VariaDot® imaging technology to deliver near-photographic quality for virtually any large format display graphics application. As a true flatbed system, it can be used to print on most any rigid substrate or object up to 49.2 by 98.4 inches in area, and up to two inches thick. In addition, a Roll Media Option can be installed at any time to enable unattended printing on flexible, roll-based media up to 86.6 inches wide. The Océ Arizona 550 GT printer features a White Ink Option to support under-printing on non-white media or objects, over-printing on transparent media for backlit applications, and/or white ink as a spot color.

Sefas Innovation Unveils Open Print Version 7 at GRAPH EXPO 2010
Chicago, IL; October 4, 2010 – Sefas Innovation today announced the release of Open Print Version 7, a solution suite that provides end-to-end visibility and control over the document supply chain from a unified dashboard command center. The new unified architecture provides an easy-to-use interface with solution modules that can be easily turned on to add capability without the need to install or learn a new software tool. Modules for collaborative design of transactional documents, post-composition enhancement of legacy document applications and production management are now available side-by-side in a single tabbed interface. Open Print Version 7 further extends the capability of the Open Print platform with an entirely new Output Management module that completes the end-to-end solution offering. Open Print Version 7 is making its public debut this week with live demonstrations in the Sefas Innovations Booth #861 at GRAPH EXPO 2010, October 3-6, in Chicago.
“Our aim has been to create a software suite that makes visibility and control of the document supply chain possible,” says Bruno Henry, Chief Operating Officer for Sefas Innovation. “For the sake of flexibility and affordability, we have built Open Print as a set of modules that can be purchased individually. But the greatest payoffs come when the customer is able to exploit the way our software knits all the elements together and joins the links of the supply chain to create a single automated work stream. With Open Print Version 7, Sefas is launching the first product that truly integrates the acquisition, processing and distribution of customer communication at the level of the supply chain model.”
Open Print Version 7 organizes its capabilities into two new workshop environments – the Document Workshop and the Production Workshop. The Document Workshop provides unified management of all documents at the front end of the supply chain enabling input normalization, composition and post-composition enhancement, as well as output management and print stream rendering. The Production Workshop provides visibility and control for the back end of the supply chain enabling efficient production, tracking and distribution.
While capability enhancements are included in all the solution modules, the addition of an entirely new module for Output Management shows the extensibility of the platform and provides comprehensive capability to configure output rendering options, specify standard or custom impositions, and define multi-step ADF processes to automate and sequence output-related events and tasks. Users can define ADF workflows in a drag and drop interface that shows a visual representation of the workflow with the ability to run animated simulations of workflows to visually check scenarios before production testing.
“While leveraging the enterprise data architecture and object reusability principles of the Open Print platform, Open Print Version 7 delivers a new level of digital communication and production management that extends well beyond the traditional scope of ADF,” says Jean-Philippe Sarraut, President and CEO of Sefas Innovation. “The solution also delivers an ease-of-use that puts customization directly in the hands of production center managers with the operational knowledge to define automated decision processing. No longer does a sophisticated optimized workflow require coded customizations for which you need specialized technical expertise.”

Pitney Bowes Introduces Print+ Messenger™ Color Inkjet System
New Module for Pitney Bowes Inserters Enables Flexible, Customized Envelope Printing
CHICAGO, IL, October 3, 2010 -- Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) today announced the launch of the new Print+ Messenger™ Color Inkjet System, which enables the high-resolution color printing of customized marketing messages on envelopes during high-speed mail insertion. The new system, the result of a collaboration between mail finishing leader Pitney Bowes and inkjet printing technology leader HP, is on display in Booth #3601 at the 2010 Graph Expo exhibition and conference being held here.
The new technology can help mailers improve their operational efficiency by eliminating preprinted envelopes, reducing envelope storage needs, streamlining application changeover, and commingling mail. An integral part of a White Paper Factory™ solution, it eliminates the need for mailers to use anything other than plain white envelopes for their customer communications. All necessary information, including customized marketing offers, company logos, mailing and return addresses, and postal barcodes can be printed directly onto the envelope as it travels along the inserter. The Print+ Messenger Color Inkjet System can operate at speeds up to 20,000 mailpieces per hour, making this technology practical for even the highest-volume mailers.
“We talk a lot about innovation at Pitney Bowes, and the Print+ Messenger Color Inkjet System is further evidence that we back up this talk with action that directly benefits our customers,” said Ramesh Ratan, president of Pitney Bowes Document Messaging Technologies. “By bringing our proprietary intelligent variable transport and integrity tracking and software together with HP’s world-renowned printing expertise, we have created something unique in the marketplace. That’s exciting.”
“HP technology will provide unprecedented advantages by providing cost-reduction opportunities and improved response rates to customers in the direct mail and transpromotional print markets,” said Kathy Tobin, vice president and general manager of Specialty Printing Systems at HP. “The expandability and scalability of this technology will also provide next-level performance in speed, image quality and substrate coverage.”
The Pitney Bowes system offers the quality, information integrity and service support that production mail customers around the world have come to expect from the market leader. This is not the first time high-speed color printing and mailing processes have been brought together into a single, seamless business solution. The innovators at Pitney Bowes and HP are also behind the IntelliJet™ line of color production printing systems. Together in an end-to-end solution, Pitney Bowes Production Intelligence® software, IntelliJet Printing Systems and high-speed mail finishing with the Print+ Messenger system can help print and mail operations migrate to an all white paper environment and gain unprecedented levels of productivity and operational cost savings--while adding greater value to their customer communications.
“This is a wonderful time to be a marketer,” said Ratan. “Changes in technology and system integration are opening up new media channels, new opportunities and new business possibilities at an astonishing rate. We think our new inkjet printing system will be the catalyst that brings marketing and mailing operations together in ways that allow everyone to shine.”
Historically, marketers have pushed for customization and specialization in delivering messages to customers and prospects, adding to the complexity of mailing operations. Mailroom operators, meanwhile, have emphasized low-cost and efficient business processes, which promote standardization of software, hardware and supplies. The new system from Pitney Bowes helps everyone to achieve their goals. The mailroom operator needs to stock plain white envelopes only, while the marketer uses software and print technology to turn each envelope into a specially-tailored customer communication.
Pitney Bowes is already accepting orders from U.S. customers for the Print+ Messenger Color Inkjet System. The product will be available for customers outside the United States in the near future.
About Pitney Bowes: Celebrating its 90th year of innovation, Pitney Bowes provides software, hardware and services that integrate physical and digital communications channels. Océ and Intersections Inc. Demonstrate High Quality, Full Color Variable Financial Communications at Graph Expo
Secure, Rapid High-end Customer Communication Demonstrations for Sensitive Financial and Personal Information Featured
Trumbull, CT – September 30, 2010 – Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, joins with Intersections Inc., a leading provider of consumer and corporate identity risk management services, at Graph Expo to provide a live demonstration of its fully customized, highly personalized credit management and identity theft fulfillment kits.
Intersections uses Océ JetStream® technology to produce hundreds of thousands of secure reports a month for clients in the financial services market. The Océ JetStream 1000 system delivers the quality and versatility that take this popular Intersections product to a new level of high-end quality incorporating color, in addition to variable imaging and text.
Customized Financial Product Now in Color
Intersections has been providing its clients, including the top financial institutions in North America, with print products since 1996. The company has serviced over 30 million consumers with identity theft and credit management services, primarily under private label arrangements. Popular components of these products are credit and public record reports that financial institutions can customize and brand as their own products.
"Many of our customers prefer to have a tangible product in their hands, particularly when they are reviewing credit reports, public record reports, and other complex personal details. By adding color to our kits using the Océ JetStream system, we have the opportunity to increase customer comprehension of the complex data we present. We can also use color to ensure consumers understand what we do for them and enhance our ability to carry our valuable partners' brands through the kits using their colors and logos," said Andy Gerry, Intersections Senior Vice President of Operations.
Quality and security are top concerns for Intersections customers, and with the Océ JetStream very high speed ink jet digital printing system, Intersections can offer a secure environment for onsite printing. This provides a major competitive advantage over competitors that outsource personalized color applications and risk compromising consumer information. Numerous security parameters minimize the risk of compromised information, and Intersections is PCI compliant, meeting industry security standards for the payment card industry.
More Color and More Capacity
The high capacity and performance of the Océ JetStream system have also given Intersections the added capacity to pursue other segments that require secure printing. Intersections can expand its client base and offer the service to more markets, because the Océ JetStream printer provides the ample capacity and reliability to produce hundreds of thousands of reports each month.
The live demonstration of the Intersections fully customized, highly personalized credit management and identity theft fulfillment kits takes place in Océ Booth 1217 at Graph Expo.

GMC Software Technology to Highlight Multi-Channel Communications at Graph Expo
September 28, 2010–Boston, Massachusetts and Appenzell, Switzerland-- GMC Software Technology, the standard in personalized communication, will highlight new product features that enable print service providers and enterprise customers to engage in highly personalized multi-channel communications including print, email and mobile messaging at Graph Expo 2010, October 3-6, 2010, McCormick Place South in Chicago, Illinois.
Demonstrations will be conducted in GMC’s booth, number 455 as well as a variety of hardware and software partner’s booths. The company will also be showing how print fits into an increasingly seamless customer communications management strategy and how print service providers and in-house printing departments can help their customers and themselves to grow profits and cut costs by using the latest software technologies for multi-channel communications.
“The trend in marketing communications has shifted as there isn’t one single communications channel that delivers better than another and that works for most everyone,” said Bill Parker, CMO at GMC Software Technology. “As a result, we are automatically living in a multi-channel world that is controlled by the customer, who in the end, will determine how, when and where they want to be communicated with and in which medium or channel.”
According to the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Statistical Fact Book, 2010, online search, email, online video, social media and mobile marketing grew respectively from 4 to 28 percent in 2010, while magazine, yellow pages, newspapers, online display and broadcast declined. The fact book also pointed out that while marketers still invest significantly in traditional marketing mediums, direct mail for example at 15 percent of their overall marketing budget, they are also making modest investments in online and mobile marketing in 2010.
GMC Software Technology is well positioned to take advantage of existing and emerging marketing trends as their solutions enable the delivery of customer communications via multiple channels with cross-channel integration in a consistent and coordinated way. Specifically, GMC’s products and solutions enable the rapid creation, management and production of complex personalized documents:
- Multi-Channel: Coordinated electronic, print, and mobile communications with integrated response capture
- Print: TransPromo, direct marketing, on-demand publishing, customer communication and transactional applications
- Email: HTML or plain text email and integration with PURL’s and surveys
- Mobile: SMS or MMS messaging
In addition to the company’s presence in the exhibit hall, GMC Software Technology’s Scott Baker, Vice President of Worldwide Channels, will be speaking at Xplor at Graph Expo, a two-day education program. Baker presentation titled “Technology Applications and Their Use in Multi-Channel Marketing Campaigns” will be held Tuesday, October 5 at 11:00 AM in room N426A in McCormick Place South.

Kodak’s Consolidated Graphics Upgrades to KODAK NEXPRESS SE3600 Presses and Expands Overseas Operations
CHICAGO, Oct. 3—To meet the increasing demand from customers in global markets for high quality, locally produced materials, Consolidated Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: CGX) has completed upgrades of 19 KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 Digital Production Color Presses to the KODAK NEXPRESS SE3600 Press. CGX also purchased five additional NEXPRESS SE3600 Presses for operations in Prague, Czech Republic, and in Yokohama, Japan.
“More and more of our customers want us to produce product overseas that is consistent with the product we produce for them in the United States,” said Ric Davis, Executive Vice President of Operations for CGX. “With the NEXPRESS SE3600 Presses, we can provide better customer service and shorter lead times, as well as lower shipping costs, by producing these print materials in the countries in which they are needed.”
“We like the upgrades because we can produce more pages with the same number of operators in the same footprint,” said Davis. “We are implementing the upgrades in stages. We have several presses in one building in each of our digital supercenters, so we keep running with functional presses while we take one or more presses offline for about a week to complete the upgrade. It’s worked out very well.”
Field upgradability is one of the most attractive benefits of choosing KODAK NEXPRESS Presses.
“Customers who already have KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 or 3000 Series Presses can see significant cost savings when they choose to upgrade to the NEXPRESS SE3600 Press,” said Stephen Fletcher, General Manager, Electrophotographic Printing Solutions, Kodak. “The ability to upgrade these presses in the field provides customers with the most advanced features and the fastest speeds, without the downtime required to remove an older press and replace it with a new system. The price to upgrade is about 15 percent of the cost of a new press, protecting CGX’s capital investment.”
Not only does the NEXPRESS SE3600 Press upgrade increase capacity and speed for CGX, but it also includes the KODAK NEXPRESS Intelligent Calibration System (ICS), which increases productivity for commercial printers. Using ICS, CGX can capture and analyze color output and feed critical data back to the system for closed-loop calibration, delivering the dependable Pantone or PMS corporate color matching capability that CGX customers demand for worldwide distribution of their printed materials.
Much of CGX’s business comes from customers who require variable data printing (VDP), Davis said. “We aren’t printing thousands of copies of the same thing,” he said. “Whether it’s a photo book or a variable data product, every piece is personalized. Variable data is driving the growth in the business.”
The NEXPRESS SE3600 Press features KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Front End Software version 11, the first front end in the market with ADOBE PDF Print Engineer 2.0 for higher productivity and seamless workflow integration—particularly when implementing VDP capabilities. NEXPRESS System Software version 11 improves file processing significantly, providing the high level of accuracy required for VDP applications. The NEXPRESS SE3600 Press is the only sheet fed digital production color press to offer unconstrained 3600 A3+ sheets per hour, or 120 pages per minute.
Davis also points to the capabilities offered by KODAK NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions, which allow users to add a variety of unique features inline during the printing process. For the SE3600 Press, Kodak’s Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions offer clear coating, watermarking, glossing, protection coating, and color gamut expansion.
“The clear toner option and the dimensional printing capability are possible only with the NEXPRESS Press,” Davis said. “With the right customer and the right requirements, these are good things to have.”

KODAK NEXPRESS SX Digital Production Color Platform Builds on Proven Performance, Adds New Features
New family of presses opens doors to new revenue and profit opportunities
CHICAGO, Oct. 3—With significant new quality and productivity capabilities, the new KODAK NEXPRESS SX Digital Production Color Platform with Print Genius is designed to meet the needs of commercial printers, in-plant printers, data centers, and photo printers. The newest features include speeds up to 131 ppm, a longer sheet size (26 inch/661mm), smaller ink particle size, denser black ink, new Fifth Imaging Unit Solution Light Black, and a new matte printing effect option. As always, most existing NEXPRESS Press users can easily upgrade to take full advantage of these new capabilities.
The long sheet option, which is being shown at Graph Expo, at 26 inches—delivers 27 percent more printable area. The benefits of this longer sheet include reduced waste and increased productivity, while enabling new applications such as six-page brochures, posters, larger dust jackets for books, and a variety of labels.
“Our customers continue to amaze us with the innovative ways they use the technology and the unique applications they are producing,” says Stephen Fletcher, General Manager, Electrophotographic Printing Solutions, Kodak. “The new features of the SX will open even more doors for growth. And because of the upgradeability, customers can grow at their own pace.”
New, smaller ink particles are designed to reduce grain, provide smoother continuous tones for photo-quality output, and use less ink. In addition, light black dry ink, which is now available for the Fifth Imaging Unit, utilizes proprietary algorithms to substitute the light black for specific colors, resulting in smoother skin tones while maintaining superb detail. The matte effect is a new option, completed in line, that produces a matte look for printed pages or photos.
Featuring a monthly duty cycle of more than 4 million pages and print speeds of 91, 109, or 131 ppm when using the longest sheet, the NEXPRESS SX Platform prints on more than 600 standard offset substrates including coated, uncoated, FSC, plastics, magnets, linens, static clings, micro-perforated, substrates with embedded ID cards or magnets, and more.
The Fifth Imaging Unit enables watermarking, protection coating, glossing, MICR printing, gamut expansion, raised printing, or red fluorescing ink for security applications. In addition, high-quality glossing is possible using KODAK NEXPRESS Clear Dry Ink in conjunction with the near-line KODAK NEXPRESS Glossing Unit.
“From variable data printing to dimensional printing to security printing and everything in between, the entire NEXPRESS Platform puts the control in the hands of the operator,” added Fletcher. “Based on the needs of their existing clients and the potential in their local markets, they can decide which features are right for them, and know that the results will be outstanding. They are certainly differentiating themselves from the competition with these devices.”
The second generation KODAK NEXPRESS Intelligent Calibration System (ICS) delivers consistent high quality that minimizes downtime and costs by minimizing parts replacement. The ICS is at the core of a closed-loop quality control system that maintains accurate color reproduction and increases image quality. In addition, the system uses industry-leading LED imaging heads, an inline scanner, and software based on Kodak’s proprietary image science to allow for automatic color management while the press is printing.
Like all NEXPRESS Presses, the NEXPRESS SX Platform is designed to reduce environmental impact. Prints are de-inkable using standard industry processes, and Dry Inks do not contain lead or phthalates above limits for children’s products established by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.
The NEXPRESS SX Platform—like all NEXPRESS Presses—features Print Genius, a suite of productivity and quality control tools and options that automate and help you manage and maintain peak quality throughout your production run. The Print Genius quality suite encompasses hardware, software and material science innovations to optimize quality and consistency from the first sheet to the last, day after day.
With many of the same new quality and productivity features, Kodak recently announced the KODAK NEXPRESS Photo Press. It features outstanding photo quality output with exceptional productivity for the production of printed photo products, including hard and soft cover photo books, calendars, greeting cards, 4x6 prints, magnets, and other photo products. Designed to deliver unique effects such as raised printing and matte or gloss coating, the NEXPRESS Photo Press is ideal for photo specialty printers, photo labs, commercial printers, and others who serve customers in the photo space.
KODAK Products are backed by KODAK Service and Support. KODAK Service and Support is made up of more than 3,000 professionals in 120 countries. Kodak’s Three Editions of KODAK Proofing Software 5.0 Deliver Accurate Color Proofs for Printers at Every Level
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 3—KODAK Proofing Software, the industry’s only solution that allows customers the flexibility to proof from both halftone and inkjet systems, now comes in three editions to provide professionals in enterprise, marketing, publishing, commercial printing, and packaging the right tools they need to achieve predictable, color-accurate proofs. KODAK Proofing Software 5.0, bundled with the KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet Proofing System, is available in Basic, Commercial, and Packaging Editions to bring specialized proofing tools to each market segment. KODAK Proofing Software 5.0, Packaging Edition is available with the KODAK APPROVAL NX Digital Color Imaging System to make the packaging industry’s workhorse proofing solution more productive than ever.
“Kodak has enhanced the KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet System to respond directly to the challenges customers face in consistent color production in a wide variety of circumstances,” said Chris LaFontaine, Global Product Manager, Inkjet and Software. “With its three editions, KODAK Proofing Software 5.0 addresses the disparate needs of print shops of every size, from the simple print-to-proof solution to the complex features involved in package printing.”
The Basic Edition offers an out-of-the-box proofing product to small commercial print shops, quick printers, in-plant operations and corporate design environments. KODAK Proofing Software 5.0 allows customers with minimal technical knowledge to produce accurate proofs right away, with minimal setup time. The software works with many inkjet printers on the market today, making KODAK Proofing Software 5.0 a flexible solution that can become part of almost any printing environment.
The Commercial Edition, created for graphic communication agencies, commercial trade and print shops, and larger in-plant printing operations, provides a complete out-of-the box solution, ready to produce high-quality color standards-based contract proofs. When used with KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet Media, which features a unique untinted base, printers achieve a better simulation of actual press performance within accepted industry standards.
Packaging convertors, packaging trade shops and high-end printers will find KODAK Proofing Software 5.0’s Packaging Edition especially versatile, as it supports both the MATCHPRINT Inkjet System and the KODAK APPROVAL NX Digital Color Imaging System. The ability to use one proofing workflow for both halftone and inkjet proofing will reduce errors and speed time to delivery for packaging customers. Each system offers important benefits to the packaging marketplace: the KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet System includes new color tools and flexo features, supporting the demanding requirements of the market. KODAK APPROVAL System provides packaging printers an accurate advance look at press results and the ability to fix problems early in the process, reducing the waste of plate, ink, substrate and valuable press-time.
All three editions of KODAK Proofing Software are part of the MATCHPRINT Inkjet System that saves time and achieves color and RIP integrity by connecting proofing seamlessly to KODAK PRINERGY Workflow Systems. The MATCHPRINT Inkjet System includes KODAK Proofing Software 5.0, KODAK COLORFLOW Software configured for KODAK Proofing Software, workstation, KODAK PRINERGY Workflow or open workflow connectivity, MATCHPRINT Inkjet Media, and one of the latest drop-on-demand inkjet printers.

Canon's imagePROGRAF iPF8300 Printer, Lucia Ex Pigment Inks And Canon Media Receive High Print Permanence Ratings From Wilhelm Imaging Research
CHICAGO, October, 3, 2010 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced that the imagePROGRAF iPF8300 large format printer, high-stability LUCIA EX pigment inks and Canon media have undergone extensive print-permanence testing by Wilhelm Imaging Research (WIR), the world’s leading independent permanence testing laboratory. Both the imagePROGRAF iPF8300 printer and Canon media achieved a very high level of overall WIR Print Permanence Ratings for large format printers.
The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300 printer with LUCIA EX pigment inks (also used in the iPF6350/6300 printers) and Canon media achieved a WIR “Displayed Prints Framed Under Glass” permanence rating of up to 95 years for color images, and greater than 200 years for black-and-white output. The Canon prints also proved to be very resistant to damage from high-humidity environments, ozone exposure and water damage, according to WIR tests. “Whether printed in color or made in black-and-white, the prints are beautiful – and will remain beautiful – for a very long period of time,” said Henry Wilhelm, president, Wilhelm Imaging Research.
The full WIR report for the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300 printer, which features Brian Hampton, an award-winning wildlife and landscape photographer, making prints with his iPF8300, can be found on the WIR website at http://www.wilhelm-research.com/canon/ipf8300.html
The comprehensive print permanence test methods developed by the Wilhelm Imaging Research over the past twenty-five years have become the de facto industry standard for both consumer and professional printers, and the WIR test methods are also used by many of the world’s leading independent fine art and inkjet photo paper suppliers. WIR’s tests, which provide easy-to-understand “apples-to-apples” comparisons between products, are designed to evaluate all of the five major print longevity factors: prolonged exposure to light when prints are displayed, dark storage and album stability, and resistance to unprotected exposure to atmospheric ozone, high-humidity, and damage by water.
“At Canon, we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality in prints along with the consistency and reliability professionals have come to expect when using our products,” said Rich Reamer, director, Large Format Product Marketing, Canon U.S.A. “The combination of our new 12-color LUCIA EX pigment ink, with its high ratings for print permanence, along with the imagePROGRAF models such as the iPF8300, will provide professionals with the confidence and capability to print exceptionally high-quality output that will last.”
Canon has also created the LUCIA EX Print Sample Request Program, giving consumers the opportunity to receive photographs printed on the new Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300/6350/6300 large format printers. Customers will receive three printed images captured by Canon Explorer of Light photographers, which demonstrate the high-quality printing capabilities of the imagePROGRAF 12-color series and new LUCIA EX ink set. To request the print samples, individuals can visit www.usa.canon.com/ipfprintsample.
About Wilhelm Imaging Research
Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. has for over 25 years conducted research on the stability and preservation of traditional and digitally-printed color and black-and-white photographs, and on the preservation of motion pictures in humidity-controlled, very low temperature cold storage. A major activity of WIR is the development of improved accelerated print permanence tests and advanced, full tonal scale, colorimetric analysis methods for the fading and staining that occurs with color and black-and-white photographic images over time. As an independent testing laboratory, WIR publishes brand-name-specific, comparative permanence data for desktop and large-format inkjet printers and other digital imaging devices. WIR has provided standardized test data to many of the world’s leading imaging and photographic companies.

Process Metallic Color System™ by Color-Logic Receives MustSee‘ems! Award at Graph Expo 2010
West Chester, OH; October 2010—The Process Metallic Color System by Color-Logic™ received a coveted MustSee’ems! award at Graph Expo 2010 in Chicago. Commenting on the award, Color-Logic Director of Sales and Marketing Mark Geeves said: “We are gratified that the editors and consultants evaluating product introductions at the show singled out our Process Metallic Color System as one of the most important products for show visitors to see. This honor reinforces the fantastic acceptance of our system around the world, and the increased awareness which will result from the award should bring it to the attention of still more graphic designers, printers, converters, and sign makers.”
The Process Metallic Color System by Color-Logic provides a communication system linking graphic designers with printers and converters. It was introduced in 2010 and has quickly gained recognition and popularity for its ability to produce striking metallic images and special effects using offset lithography, flexography, digital processes such as those used by Xeikon and HP, and wide-format digital printing. In addition to conventional paper, the process may be used on films, foils, and other substrates. The Process Metallic Color System software provides graphic designers with the ability to add a fifth silver separation to their usual CMYK images, and to create designs heretofore impossible to achieve. Many Color-Logic special effects can be created with a single mouse click. Printers license the process from Color-Logic on a one-time basis, for perpetual use. Color-Logic partners with major press and output device suppliers, including manufacturers providing coating and proofing equipment, as well as ink and substrate suppliers, to ensure compatibility with existing printer workflows and practices. Color-Logic sells directly to printers in major industrial countries and relies on screened and qualified agents in smaller markets.
Color-Logic™ develops color communication systems and software tool sets for a variety of special effect printing applications. Color-Logic provides brand owners, product managers, corporations, and their advertising agencies the ability to differentiate themselves and their clients with a simple print production process that yields dramatic results. Color-Logic special effects utilize the existing workflows of printers and designers, yielding dynamic results without the use of special equipment. Color-Logic supports the value of print and works with designers and printers to enhance their printed media. For more information, visit www.color-logic.com or call 513-258-0047.

EFI Demonstrating Full Product Portfolio at GRAPH EXPO, With Spotlight on Key Vertical Markets
Company Will Show How its Award-Winning Integrated Offerings in Eight Segments Enable Customers to Expand Capabilities, Improve Productivity and Boost Profits
Foster City, Calif. – Sept. 29, 2010
– At GRAPH EXPO 2010, EFI™ (Nasdaq: EFII), a world leader in customer-focused digital printing innovation, will showcase its complete portfolio of solutions that continue to lead the industry's progression from analog to digital technology. EFI’s suite of offerings will be on display in booth 2000 (Oct. 3-6th, Chicago’s McCormick Place) and in partner booths, including Canon U.S.A., Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Ricoh Americas Corporation, Xerox Corporation and others.
The newest versions of EFI products will be highlighted, including print MIS, Web-to-Print and proofing solutions; the next-generation Fiery® digital print server; EFI VUTEk® superwide digital inkjet printers; EFI Rastek™ UV wide format printers; and EFI Jetrion® industrial inkjet printing systems.
“GRAPH EXPO is a great opportunity for print providers of all sizes and specialties to learn about the latest technologies available to help them grow and diversify,” said Guy Gecht, EFI CEO. “EFI continues to focus on the areas of print where the opportunities for profitable growth are real and significant. We look forward to demonstrating first-hand how our innovative, integrated solutions can make customers successful in these growth areas.”
Throughout the show floor, EFI will run 33 Fiery products, demonstrating once again that Fiery is the industry’s most popular digital print workflow. In its own booth, the company will highlight its diverse portfolio and strong integration between solutions by displaying its products around vertical markets that match customers’ business needs, divided into eight segments: On Demand/Print for Pay, Small Commercial/CRD, Commercial/Specialty Printers, Large Commercial/Publishing, Digital Sign and Screen, Packaging and Labels, Creative Agencies/Color Professionals and Office Solutions. While many EFI products address customer requirements in multiple verticals, here’s what visitors can expect to see in each area of the booth:
On Demand/Print for Pay
Here Graph Expo attendees will see the recently launched next-generation Fiery platform that drives digital print production engines, as well as the Fiery Central production workflow tool. EFI will also demonstrate the latest Fiery JDF integrations, in particular between EFI’s Web-to-Print platform, EFI print MIS systems and Fiery servers.
Small Commercial/CRD
The center area of the EFI booth will be focused on job submission with EFI Digital StoreFront® and on print MIS with the popular EFI PrintSmith™. Since many small commercial printers and CRDs run Fiery-driven devices, the powerful Fiery Command WorkStation® job and device management console will be demonstrated along with the production workflow solution EFI MicroPress®.
Commercial/Specialty Printers
EFI Pace™ takes center stage in this section of the booth. EFI Pace is a browser-based, scalable and customizable print MIS. In addition to Pace itself, the product will be shown integrated to the EFI Digital StoreFront Web-to-Print platform and Fiery servers via Fiery JDF integration technology. EFI will show how this combination can eliminate thousands of profit-consuming touch-points, reducing errors and speeding production.
Large Commercial/Publishing
EFI Monarch, the print production and management solution for large, single and multi-plant operations, will be the spotlight in this area. EFI will display the latest Monarch user interface, advancements in visual planning capabilities, state of the art JDF imposition automation integrated with pre-press workflow systems, and a new Monarch iPhone APP. Two powerful add-on solutions (already key components of Monarch) will be demonstrated separately – EFI PrintFlow® scheduling and the EFI Auto-Count® shop floor data collection solution.
Digital Sign and Screen
The powerful VUTEk GS3200 and VUTEk GS5000r superwide format printers anchor two corners of the large EFI booth. In between, two new EFI Rastek wide-format printers will be on display at GRAPH EXPO for the first time.
EFI Pace will also be shown as a complete Print MIS designed for the display graphics market and integrated with the Fiery XF digital front end driving VUTEk and Rastek printers.
Since the commercialization of the GS series in late 2009, more than 100 printers have been sold, and the total print output from the GS printer series has exceeded 75 million square feet.
Packaging and Labels
For the packaging and label markets, EFI offers the award-winning Jetrion 4830, providing flexible options across a web width of 9 inches with a print width of 8.3 inches. The Jetrion 4830 integrates with the EFI Fiery XF RIP, which will also be on display. The newest member of the EFI Print MIS family, EFI Radius, will be demonstrated in this area. Radius is designed to enable an end-to-end, intelligent and optimized management and production workflow for label, flexible packaging, converting, and folding carton businesses.
Creative Agencies/Color Professionals
Fiery Production Solutions ensure precise, predictable color every time with expert color management tools like Fiery Color Profiler Suite and Fiery Graphic Arts Package. EFI’s Inkjet Printing Applications offer powerful production tools to create and distribute high-quality proofs, including Colorproof™ XF, EFI eXpress, and the unique Web Control Center. Epson and Mutoh devices are part of this area.
Office Solutions
Fiery Office Solutions help businesses run more productively and profitably. This portion of the booth will highlight tools and applications that enable office workers to quickly and easily publish and digitally manage and distribute documents. Fiery VUE, EFI SendMe™, Fiery Send Server, and EFI PrintMe® will be on display.
Theatre Presentations, Panel Speaker and User Group Meeting

Roland 900XXL: Perfect in Format 8
Again at the cutting edge of technology, manroland’s performance after the start up of the world’s first ROLAND 900 XXL Perfecting press at Himmer Printing in Germany has been breaking all production expectation records
manroland (booth #858) will be at Graph Expo 2010, the year's largest graphic communications exhibition and conference in North America, on October 3 - 6, 2010, in Chicago's McCormick Place South. manroland will be featuring all of the latest 2010 technology releases, and one of the main discussion topics which manroland expects to draw interest from the US and Canadian Markets is Large Format Perfecting.
As reported earlier this year, over six million sheets have already been printed. Just a few weeks after start-up, the Augsburg (Germany) printing company, Himmer, already started gathering substantial benefits from its first sheetfed press worldwide in format 8 (73 inch) with perfecting.
Achieving excellent quality from the very start, Himmer, a publication printer, was able to take on production for numerous newly acquired orders on the ROLAND 900 XXL. In order to handle the large order volume, Himmer recently increased from two-shift to three-shift production: a considerable development, given the fact that 64 four-color pages are printed nearly twice as fast with perfecting than they would be in two straight printing runs.
New standards in cost-efficient production
Himmer can take advantage of a highly productive simultaneous two-sided perfecting process that avoids downstream matching. This reduces waste andeliminates allowance for the second side. The full print run can always be started with confidence. With InlineColorPilot, the integrated ink density measurement and control system, a good-sheet status is achieved immediately, and excellent quality is guaranteed throughout the print run.
Ease in handling
The print sheets in format 8 (73 inch) are separated into two precise format 5 (36 inch) piles by the InlineSlitter, which is integrated in the sheet delivery, and prepared for simple finishing in conventional sheet folders.

Presstek's Computer-to-Plate Solutions Offer One-Stop Shopping at Graph Expo
Presstek platemaking solutions meet the needs of printing operations of all sizes.
Hudson, NH - September 13, 2010 - Presstek, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRST), a leading supplier of digital offset printing solutions to the printing and communications industries, today announced that it will be demonstrating industry-leading CTP solutions, ranging from two-page polyester to fully automated four-page metal options, at Graph Expo 2010, scheduled for October 3-6, 2010, at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Presstek will be located in Booth 2600 at the show. CTP solutions on display include Presstek’s Dimension Pro 400, Vector FL52 and DPM Pro 400. Presstek will also feature its chemistry-free Aurora EXP, Anthem Pro and Freedom Pro plates, along with Aeon, a high resolution, no preheat thermal plate. Aeon offers runs of up to 200,000 and as many as 1,000,000 impressions when baked.
“Our range of CTP hardware and plate solutions is unmatched in the industry,” said Kathleen McHugh, Presstek’s Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Presstek is a leading supplier of small format CTP systems and chemistry-free plates, and we have focused a significant portion of our product portfolio on this heritage. Our new 4- and 8-page open platform solutions, including both platesetters and plates, meet requirements across the board in the commercial print market, making Presstek the first stop for owners and managers of printing solutions seeking more environmentally friendly and competitive platemaking capabilities.”
The CTP Portfolio
“While Presstek believes strongly in the importance of the environmental sustainability of a completely chemistry-free platemaking process,” added McHugh, “we also understand that certain applications are not yet amenable to this strategy. In order to cover the complete market requirements for printing operations of all sizes, Presstek has assembled a comprehensive portfolio of platesetters with detailed comparisons in the tables at the end of this release.”
The Compass Series is Presstek’s high-end, completely automated CTP solution. Its multi-cassette autoloader provides complete production flexibility; each cassette holds plates of different sizes and can be reloaded without interrupting production. Compass supports Presstek’s chemistry-free Aurora Pro, Aeon and other 830 nm plates and is available in four- and eight-page models.
Presstek’s mid-range CTP offering the Dimension Pro will be featured at Graph Expo. The base unit is semi-automated, and it also available with an optional automated plate loading system. Like the Compass it supports Presstek’s chemistry-free Aurora Pro and Anthem Pro as well as Aeon and other 830 nm plates and is available in four-and eight-page configurations.
The Vector FL52 features an integrated plate washer and uses Presstek’s chemistry-free Freedom Pro plates. The Vector offers the small format (52cm and under) printer a metal platemaking solution that provides higher productivity, a cleaner operation, and a lower overall operating cost than any other metal platemaking solution on the market.
The Presstek DPM Pro 400 is an easy-to-use, fully automated, high resolution polyester plate CTP system with an integrated plate processor. It supports plate widths up to 16.31" (414mm) and is faster, more economical to use, more environmentally-friendly, and more compact than comparable choices.
“We are thrilled to be demonstrating our line of platesetters and plates at Graph Expo,” said Joe Demharter, Presstek’s Vice President of sales. “It is very exciting to have such a competitive mix of products and to be able to provide viable solutions to accounts of all sizes. We invite visitors to our booth to explore this full range of products, along with our workflow solutions. Our experts will also be on hand to discuss which solution is best for a particular production environment with individual visitors.”

Success of KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press Leads Offset Paperback Manufacturers to Purchase KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press
OPM becomes first printer to install both PROSPER 1000 and 5000XL Presses
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 4—With a KODAK PROSPER 1000 Press already in use and producing as many as 1.7 million book pages per day in its Laflin, Penn. facility, Offset Paperback Mfrs. (OPM), an arvato US Bertelsmann Company, has added a KODAK PROSPER 5000XL Press to its book publishing operations. OPM is one of the largest manufacturers of mass-market paperback books in the world. Its clients include many of the most recognized brands in publishing.
The PROSPER 5000XL Press adds full color offset class output to OPM’s digital capabilities, with roll-fed speeds identical to the PROSPER 1000 Press: up to 650 feet (or 200 meters) per minute. This combination of speed and superior quality make the PROSPER 5000XL Press the most productive inkjet web press for 8-, 12-, and 16-page signatures. The PROSPER 5000XL Press matches the PROSPER 1000 Press’s productivity of up to 120 million A4 impressions per duty cycle, with print widths up to 24.5 inches.
OPM combines both the PROSPER 1000 and 5000XL Presses with the MULLER MARTINI SIGMALINE In-line Finishing System. The two interconnected systems bring together digital printing and finishing in a fully automated production line, providing OPM with a complete solution—from PDF to finished book in a single operation, managed by the end-to-end workflow system CONNEX.
Using the PROSPER 1000 Press in July and August 2010, OPM shipped a total of 140,000 finished books to retail without a single rejected copy. The PROSPER 1000 Press has demonstrated a proven capacity to produce 6,000 books in a shift at OPM. This level of productivity led directly to business growth for OPM, making the decision to add a PROSPER 5000XL Press an easy choice.
“We’re seeing print runs and cycle times getting smaller and shorter, and publishers are asking for more and more reprints of the same job,” said David Liess, OPM President and CEO. “Customers now expect turn times of two days, half of what they were before. The single biggest advantage of the PROSPER Presses is our ability to deliver to our customers offset-quality four-color printing in short runs. PROSPER Presses really represent a game-changer, one that is already helping us grow our business.”
Automating the production line from prepress to finishing provides significant advantages for OPM, noted Mitch Weiss, OPM’s Vice President of Sales and Operations. “Digital printing with PROSPER Presses offers us cost savings as well as productivity,” he said. “Inkjet technology is more economical than laser overall, and automation allows us to reduce or even eliminate the costs of expensive make-readies, as well as the need for manual intervention in binding and finishing the books.”
This combination of faster time to market, offset print quality and automated inventory replenishment positions OPM to increase business from the largest book publishers, especially those in the high-volume textbook market.

Customers Praise KODAK TRILLIAN SP Thermal Plates for Longer Run Times, Sharper Images
New KODAK Plates cut chemistry usage by 50 percent or more
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 4— Since the introduction of KODAK TRILLIAN SP Thermal Plates earlier this year, customers have seen long unbaked run lengths, impressive on-press chemical resistance, crisper images, and reductions in environmental impact—all while lowering their production costs and improving their efficiency.
TRILLIAN SP Plates are designed to offer commercial printers, publishers and offset package printers outstanding levels of productivity, efficiency, total-cost effectiveness and a reduction in chemistry. At Graph Expo, Kodak will showcase a complete solution consisting of TRILLIAN SP Plates, KODAK MAGNUS 800Z QUANTUM Platesetter with automatic pallet loader (APL), and the new KODAK Intelligent Prepress Manager Software.
“The biggest things about these plates are the extended run length with a lot less chemistry,” said Ajay Lamb, Vice President of Technology for American Printing Company in Madison, Wis. “We used to run a thousand plates per chemistry cycle, but with TRILLIAN SP Plates, we’re going to 3,000 plates per chemistry cycle. It’s a very good chemistry, and it saves us the time it takes to stop, change the chemistry and clean the processor.”
American Printing has seen a marked difference in on-press performance with KODAK TRILLIAN SP Plates as well. “This plate is very fast in processing, uses low energy and is superior in how it images,” said Lamb. “It’s much more consistent and higher resolution than other plates. We’re a high quality sheet-fed shop, printing everything from one or two colors all the way to eight colors with UV coatings. Consistency is important, especially with our corporate clients. With TRILLIAN SP Plates, we’ve gotten enough run length for everything that we do here.
At Monroe Litho in Rochester, N.Y., TRILLIAN SP Thermal Plates were the perfect fit with the company’s commitment to sustainable commercial printing. Certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council, Monroe is a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership. “We attract a lot of clients that are green-conscious,” said John Humrich, Monroe Litho Vice President of Operations, “and TRILLIAN SP Plates help us keep our commitment to reduce our environmental impact. We’ve cut our chemistry usage by 50 percent, and we have doubled the number of plates we can process before we have to clean the processor.”
TRILLIAN SP Plates provide Monroe Litho with longer run times as well, Humrich said. “We have had some good-sized runs of 150,000 to 200,000 sheets, and the plates did not wear out. Plus, the plates have a much crisper image. We were able to print a much finer pattern for stochastic printing.”
TRILLIAN SP Plates also lower the total cost of ownership and provide environmental benefits by using significantly less chemistry and eliminating the use of preheat and potentially postbake ovens for long runs or challenging print conditions such as UV-cure ink printing. In addition, the new KODAK TRILLIAN SP Neutral Plate Solution used for developing and replenishing, offers a single solution with a neutral pH of 6.8. The new plates, widely compatible with existing CTP and Kodak processing equipment, enable easier processor cleaning and less maintenance, and provide high-quality, consistent performance on press.
The TRILLIAN SP Plate is a non-ablative, negative working, thermal digital plate with wide operating latitude for long runs and offers excellent resistance to aggressive press chemistry such as UV inks and blanket washes. The plate operates in the 800-850 nm range and supports resolutions up to 300 lpi using KODAK SQUAREspot Imaging Technology. It is rated for up to 500,000 impressions unbaked.

C.P. Bourg Barcode Option Ensures Print Finishing Integrity
Bourg is demonstrating the new option in booth #2036 at Graph Expo 2010 in Chicago.
New Bedford, MA; October 4, 2010 -- To a financial institution, few errors are worse than sending a client an incomplete financial statement or sending one to the wrong person. C.P. Bourg, the world's leading technology developer and supplier of in-line and near-line document feeding, binding and finishing equipment, has developed a new option for its high-speed BSF Sheet Feeder that ensures finished documents are complete and produced with the correct cover.
The Bourg BSF Sheet Feeder allows print shops with different manufacturers' presses to achieve dramatic productivity increases. It features an innovative air-table design that allows its operator virtually hands-free to load and easily center stacks of collated sets from stacking carts common to Canon, HP Indigo, Kodak NEXPRESS, Océ and Xerox. The BSF feeds stock up to 14.33 x 22.5 inches into a Bourg BCM Bleed Crease Module and a Bourg BME Booklet Maker, acting as the entry point to a high-speed print finishing production line that can produce up to 5,000 booklets per hour and as many as 120,000 booklets per day.
Because it operates decoupled from the print engine, it also serves as the first line of defense for verifying the integrity of collated output brought to it on stack carts. To prevent errors from being carried into production, the BSF is equipped with optical mark recognition sensors to check for job integrity. The new barcode option further enhances workflow security by tracking the identity and number of sheets being fed from the content stack and tells the BSF when to feed the cover. If any content is not in the correct set or sequence, or if the cover doesn't match, the BSF halts production, allowing an operator to correct the situation.
"In today's digital printing environments, every set printed can be different -- and it often is," said Richard Trapilo, Executive Vice President and General Manager, C.P. Bourg, Inc. "Producing a single booklet incorrectly can compromise the integrity of a day's work, making it vitally important to catch errors immediately. Conversely, off-line production is a highly cost-effective way to quickly produce finished documents from multiple print streams when the production line is able to run at full speed," he explained.

MCS Announces In-Track Inserter Printing With Eagle 4.25" Print Head At Graph Expo 2010
MCS Booth 4511 - McCormick Place, Chicago, IL --- MCS, Inc., the leader in industrial and mailing inkjet and camera systems, is showing the new Eagle Printer in the position of a feeder station within a Pitney Bowes Flowmaster high-speed inserter.
The unique system allows on-the-fly personalization of inserts within the inserter. On-Demand variable coupons, personalized business-reply-envelopes and other inserts can be produced in-line - instead of prior to insertion. The 4.25" print-width Eagle Print Head has the smallest footprint in the industry and allows in-the-track precision printing of addresses, IMB codes and graphics across the print head without any line breaks or "stitching".
Personalizing inserts on-the-fly has the benefits of:
- Eliminating the need 2-way matched mailings for appropriate jobs. The MCS Perfect Match system can read the first personalized insert and use the sequence identifier look up and print the appropriate information on the 2nd insert.
- Reduces the complexity of keeping two streams of personalized pieces in sequence order through the print and bindery functions
- Reducing the time and cost of printing inserts in a separate process. Combining the print and insertion processes reduces labor and turnaround time.
- Along with the Perfect Match system and MCS inkjet system after the inserter, customers can perform a 3-way (insert-insert-envelope) match at full speed.
The small footprint and Modular Designed EngineeringTM associated with the MCS Eagle Inkjet System also allows for easy re-deployment to a standalone print system or other area where inkjet printing is needed.
About MCS
MCS provides industrial inkjet solutions for the industrial and mailing markets. MCS' imaging software and hardware, provides the integration cornerstone for high-speed inkjet printing on web presses and sheet-transport systems, as well as matching systems for inserters. The software is unique in its ability to simultaneously control multiple imaging heads and allow powerful graphic layout features.
Taylor Publishing Achieves Plate Imaging Milestone
CHICAGO, Oct. 5—Dallas-based Taylor Publishing uses a lot of printing plates. But earlier this year, the company reached a new level of productivity, imaging 25,669 40-inch plates in just six days. For this achievement, Taylor Publishing was honored by executives from Kodak and xpedx at Graph Expo.

The InfoPrint 5000 family enhancements now provide customers with three engine building blocks, all of which leverage the proven, scalable, and highly reliable drop-on-demand technology used since the launch of the first member of the very successful solution.
The InfoPrint 5000 family now includes:
- The MP platform can be configured to meet a variety of requirements. InfoPrint 5000 MP monochrome and MICR models (launched at IPEX in May, 2010) are targeted for customers with high volume monochrome or MICR applications who want to start transitioning to inkjet. The new InfoPrint 5000 MP color model gives customers who are beginning to develop color applications a new entry point into the production color market. Customers can select the speeds and fluids for the platform, and then convert if their needs change in the future.
- The full color GP platform has established industry leadership based on meeting customer requirements for reliability, print quality, throughput, and flexibility. Consistent with InfoPrint Solutions’ strategy of maximizing investment protection, the InfoPrint 5000 GP supports all of the enhancements made since the first release of the platform, including the new Ink Monitor tool that tracks ink usage at a job level, new certification for Pantone PLUS, and new support for additional media. The InfoPrint 5000 GP can also be configured with InfoPrint 5000 MP models, such as the InfoPrint 5000 MP MICR.
InfoPrint is working with its InfoPrint 5000 leadership inkjet platform technology provider, Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Screen), on the development of the VP platform as part of its InfoPrint 5000 family.
- The full color VP platform is designed for companies with extremely high volumes and tight print windows for mission critical applications, therefore needing proven technology with exceptional reliability to meet their clients’ needs. The VP platform offers customers a range of high speeds, with excellent print quality, similar to the GP.
This extended line of the InfoPrint 5000 family is being announced today by InfoPrint, in conjunction with Screen.
The InfoPrint 5000 family’s high quality, high reliability, and versatility make it an ideal choice for producing a broad variety of applications, including: transactional documents (e.g. statements); precision marketing pieces; direct mail, short run or customized books, and other commercial documents. Already deemed an international market leader by InfoTrends*, the InfoPrint 5000 family enhancements bring customers the broadest range of production inkjet printing systems offered in the market today.
Benefits that are available across the InfoPrint 5000 expanded family include:
- Superb print quality (with multiple bits per spot), using unique imaging technology that jets dynamically variable drop size for each pixel on the page
- Lowest power consumption for products in this class
- A suite of ink measurement tools that produce quick and accurate ink estimates at the job costing stage, and capture actual ink usage upon print completion
- Range of speeds using water-based pigment, dye, MICR, or other fluids on papers such as EP, recycled, ground wood, inkjet treated and some coated stocks
- Powerful controller and robust process management software including InfoPrint Productivity Tracker, InfoPrint Process Director, and InfoPrint Manager
- Scalable system footprint based on application requirements
“Our strategy has been to protect customer investments and expand our inkjet solution capabilities to meet customers’ needs. Today’s announcements enable customers to increase the variety of applications they can produce as a result of the additional functionality and modularity with platform upgrades, conversions, and new configurations,” said George Promis, Vice President of Inkjet Production Printing and Technology Alliances at InfoPrint Solutions. “InfoPrint has plans in place to continue building on these flagship platforms to provide a broader range of media support (including coated stock); speed / resolution options; extended color management capabilities; additional operator enhancements; integration of new functionality / components to increase productivity; and enhanced data stream, workflow, and software support.”
InfoPrint provides a breadth and depth of technical support skills established during its fifteen years of production digital color experience. This uniquely positions the company to work effectively with customers to address their key business requirements, contributing to their success.
For the second year in a row, InfoPrint Solutions is the market share leader in continuous-feed color inkjet systems installed in the United States and Western Europe. In 2009, InfoPrint Solutions held the number-one position with more than 30 percent market share. Since entering the market in 2007, InfoPrint Solutions has placed 35 percent of the systems installed in the United States and Western Europe. In that same time period InfoPrint Solutions and Screen, have installed more than half of all continuous-feed color inkjet systems, according to InfoTrends.
The three new platforms of the InfoPrint 5000 family will be demonstrated at Graph Expo 2010. The InfoPrint 5000 GP and MP Color will be demonstrated on the Ricoh/InfoPrint booth, and InfoPrint will host customers for demonstrations of the VP color system at the Screen booth. InfoPrint Solutions Continues Stellar Global Momentum Delivering Flexible and Scalable Workflow Offerings
Company showcases new browser-based remote management offering, Windows capabilities and integration with new offerings from production mail solution provider Kern at Graph Expo
BOULDER, Colo. – September 28, 2010 – InfoPrint Solutions Company, a Ricoh company, today unveiled InfoPrint ProcessDirector support for Windows®, browser-enabled remote access for mobile devices such as the Apple® iPadTM mobile digital device and integration with the mailFactory WorkCell from Kern, a leader in production mail solutions. These announcements mark continued market momentum for InfoPrint ProcessDirector, the industry’s leading workflow automation and print management software that manages an end-to-end output process from a single point of control.
InfoPrint Solutions will be demonstrating InfoPrint ProcessDirector’s browser-based capabilities on an iPad mobile digital device, enabling full access to its GUI solution – anytime, anywhere. From the beach to the water cooler, customers can now view and manage their entire workflow infrastructure remotely offering real-time access from anywhere with a secure wireless connection.
Now with Windows support, the company is extending InfoPrint ProcessDirector to customers who have made a commitment to Windows as their IT platform of choice. This offers service bureaus and data center operations a cost-effective workflow platform that fits within their existing infrastructure, without requiring specialized Linux or AIX skills. InfoPrint ProcessDirector can streamline operations, improve job-level process integrity and enhance customer service, while also reducing errors and lowering costs.
In addition to these enhancements, InfoPrint Solutions is announcing compatibility between Kern’s new mailFactory WorkCell inserter platform and InfoPrint ProcessDirector. InfoPrint and Kern customers have access to comprehensive high-integrity print-to-mail solutions, operated from a single point of control. Together the solution provides customers with lower acquisition and operation costs, reliable reporting and total print-to-mail management.
“Many smaller mailers are striving to create high-integrity, file-based insertion environments, but the cost associated with purchasing an inserter, inserter software, print management software and services to connect the two can be prohibitive – with minimal return on investment,” said Dave Squires, Senior Vice President, Kern. “The new Kern mailFactory WorkCell eliminates hardware and software overhead requirements needed to manage a file-based insertion environment, and shifts the burden to capabilities already built into InfoPrint Solutions’ InfoPrint ProcessDirector, which has built-in print and insert management capabilities.”
As a package, these offerings from InfoPrint Solutions and Kern can help mailers automate the print management, inserter management and reprint management process – while establishing a backbone for future growth. Like the iPad-enabled remote access and IPPD support for Windows offering, this integration provides customers with tools that make workflow management faster, easier and more reliable.
“InfoPrint ProcessDirector continues to offer customers unmatched, world-class workflow automation and print management from a Web-based interface that is easy to use, scalable and reliable,” said Don Dew, ADF Solutions Manager for InfoPrint Solutions. “We’re constantly driving innovations that enable flexibility, control and precise print environment management. Each of these offerings supports that goal and continues to extend the company’s leadership in the ADF and workflow solution industry.”
For more information on about any of the above mentioned offerings, please visit InfoPrint Solutions at Graph Expo in Chicago, on Oct. 3-6, 2010 at booth # 2017.

InfoPrint Solutions Enhances Professional Services Portfolio with Business Continuity Services
New offering enables “business as usual” access and control to transaction printers, no matter the circumstances
BOULDER, Colo. – September 28, 2010 – InfoPrint Solutions Company, a Ricoh company, today announced the launch of its Business Continuity Services, an extension of its top-rated Automated Document Factory workflow offerings and professional services. Facing unique continuity requirements, transaction printers in the financial, healthcare, insurance, utility, telco and government markets can now enable robust disaster recovery options in compliance with their business requirements. These new capabilities are delivered through a series of back-up plans for consistent operations throughout any type of outage including natural disasters or power outages.
The Business Continuity Services offering is based on the company’s Automated Document Factory (ADF) solutions. With an ADF-powered continuity plan, businesses have multiple options for disaster recovery such as print site continuity, onsite server continuity and off-site server continuity. With these options, customers avoid traditional disruption problems such as lack of tracking, lost documents, regulatory exposure and higher costs.
“The thing about business continuity is that most companies don’t miss it until they need it. But when they need it, they really need it and sometimes it’s too late to recover,” said Humberto Prospero, Director of Consulting Services for InfoPrint Solutions. “We strive to engage in trusting relationships with our customers so they can rely on us to assure them that no matter the circumstances. Our Business Continuity Services group ensures customers that they have options and at the end of the day, they’ll get the job done.”
InfoPrint Solutions Business Continuity Services focuses on three key options for recovery:
- Onsite Server Continuity – With an ADF server topology, onsite continuity is quickly achievable. In the occurrence that the main ADF server goes down, this continuity plan would call for the secondary ADF server to be automatically activated, with access to the same data and tracking information as the main server. Production would continue without interruption from the first failure.
- Off-site Server Continuity – By implementing multiple site ADF servers, users can easily continue a print job once the site is back up and running from the exact point of disruption or transfer work accurately between print sites. With InfoPrint ProcessDirector, users can take advantage of multi-site capabilities as well.
- External Site Continuity – In the event that the onsite/off-site ADF server cannot be recovered quickly, or in the event of a disaster that renders the primary site useless,external-site server continuity calls for job replication via infrastructure mirroring to ensure that the job is picked up at the external location (i.e. at a 3rd party Disaster Recovery site). With secure communications between the main ADF server and the remote site, jobs can be securely continued at another location without causing major delays in delivery times.
InfoPrint Solutions Business Continuity Services is another extension of its professional services organization. This team of experts and specialists also offers customers Sustainability Services, Output Optimization Services and an array of maintenance and support for all InfoPrint Solutions’ hardware and software offerings.

InfoPrint Solutions Unveils Workflow Output Optimization Consulting Services
Companies can leverage services to improve efficiency and productivity, even in the most challenging environments
BOULDER, Colo. – September 28, 2010 – InfoPrint Solutions Company, a Ricoh company, today launched its Output Optimization Consulting Service supporting customer needs in production printing environments. This new offering leverages the company’s expertise in print workflow development to help customers build more efficient, more productive and, ultimately, more competitive print environments.
Built upon more than 20 years of experience and hundreds of worldwide customer deployments, InfoPrint Solutions’ Output Optimization Consulting Services offers specific industry knowledge and expertise enabling customers to address compliance, quality and potential gaps in new capabilities, while decreasing their overall spend.
Through a comprehensive analysis, InfoPrint Solutions’ Professional Services experts help customers identify, prioritize and solve many of the biggest challenges in print-to-mail environments. In one recent example, InfoPrint Solutions identified more than $1 million in annual postal savings for a customer by applying logic that directly submits the most qualified mail to the United States Postal Service (USPS), while sending the lesser qualified mail to a pre-sort vendor. By evaluating an organization’s environment and infrastructure, the Output Optimization consultants at InfoPrint Solutions help customers improve tracking and reconciliation, maintain confidentiality and optimize the entire print-to-mail process.
The Output Optimization Consulting Service includes:
- Identification of client goals and objectives
- Thorough evaluation of current and desired environment
- Detailed gap analysis
- Technology recommendations
- RFI and RFP assistance and management
- Formal review and recommendations, including roadmap, technology and process implementations, as applicable
- Best practices reviews and comparisons
InfoPrint Solutions has always served as a trusted advisor to its customers. It has helped define the transaction print production space beginning with its development of the Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) architecture in 1984, and holds more than 200 industry patents.
“Today many companies are seeking ways to improve print quality, better plan for capacity and adhere to new compliance and capability offerings, yet they often lack the industry knowledge to identify the best path to success – InfoPrint Solutions shows them that path,” said Humberto Prospero, Director of Consulting Services for InfoPrint Solutions. “We’re committed to helping our customers leverage the best hardware, software and services to build an optimal printing and production environment that is effective, cost efficient and competitive – offering greater market share and revenue.”
InfoPrint Solutions’ Output Optimization Consulting Services are a natural extension of its open and scalable Automated Document Factory (ADF) workflow platform, which provides customers with the flexibility needed to respond to the changing needs of their customers and business. An IDC survey released earlier this year found that 68 percent of respondents receive their ADF solutions from InfoPrint Solutions , showcasing the company’s market leadership and industry expertise.

InfoPrint Solutions Launches Sustainability Consulting Services for Mail Environments
Services help organizations reduce consumption and impact, while improving efficiency, without affecting business commitments
BOULDER, Colo. – September 28 2010 – InfoPrint Solutions Company, a Ricoh company, today announced the launch of its Sustainability Consulting Services, designed to address the market’s growing need for effective and resource efficient programs. This new offering helps organizations quantify the environmental impact of their print operations, as well as identify and execute initiatives that support their continual improvement goals without impacting their customer demands and business commitments.
For many customers, establishing environmental conservation goals and setting clear objectives to achieve them are vital to overall success. InfoPrint Solutions’ Sustainability Consulting Services helps organizations identify the overall environmental impact of their print operations by looking at factors such as how much paper and electricity is being consumed. The company’s qualified professional services experts consult and evaluate the current operations and determine a cost-effective, environmental conservation solution. By using propriety tools, these experts can quickly uncover slight adjustments to the operation that can make a big impact for sustainability.
“Small, but vital, changes in print operations can help customers see immediate and significant sustainability gains, that also carry a tremendous cost savings,” said Humberto Prospero, Director of Consulting Services for InfoPrint Solutions. “For example, one InfoPrint Solutions customer implemented an address cleanup project at their large in-plant operation which resulted in the elimination of 25,000 mailed items and 50,000 printed pages per day. In addition to the greatly reduced ecological impact, there was a significant fiscal impact, with less supply costs, postage costs, etc. It is really a win-win for everyone, and that’s what we strive for.”
InfoPrint Solutions’ Sustainability Consulting Services team works with its clients to identify specific initiatives and track metrics for various aspects of the document development and output business. This may include workflow, multichannel document delivery, inventory management and device utilization. Focused on three main aspects of the business, these experts help organizations print for less and print less waste through business transformation and infrastructure optimization, and making better use of what is printed to reduce the environmental impact of those materials – based on specific internal environmental conservation goals.
These key aspects are:
- Workflow and Optimization: Organizations can gain greater efficiencies through process management and job/site optimization. This may include commingling, householding, and Print On Demand (POD) solutions, ultimately reducing consumption through better datastream preparation, paper and inventory management, device consolidation and utilization.
- Selective Print and Suppression: Companies can see immediate efficiency gains by printing only what is needed and avoiding printing waste by implementing selective print and suppression rules and lists. By viewing jobs before they are printed and ensuring reprints are done on the most suitable printer, users can drastically reduce the amount of unnecessary pages printed.
- Mail Prep and Distribution: Companies can save significantly on paper, energy and especially transport through address optimization, localized printing and alternate delivery methods. By mailing only to proven and correct addresses, maximizing sorting methods, distributing work locally and offering non-paper document delivery, organizations are poised for great efficiency gains and increased ROI.
What is found in many cases is that most organizations that are not currently leveraging the benefits of an end-to-end workflow solution can benefit significantly by implementing one. A comprehensive workflow can increase automation, enforce business rules, streamline productivity and achieve better device utilization — which will reduce raw inputs, enabling stronger environmental conservation throughout the operation.

MCS Announces Page-Width Line Scan Option For MCS Output Camera System At Graph Expo 2010
MCS Booth 4511 - McCormick Place, Chicago, IL -- MCS, Inc., the leader in industrial and mailing inkjet and camera systems, is showing its new MicroVision Line Scan camera, designed and manufactured by MCS, Inc. specifically for the mailing and printing industry.
As part of the MCS Output Camera System and MCS Perfect Match family of camera systems, the Line-Scan Camera enables multiple areas of a piece to be decoded utilizing a high-resolution scanning line of 2000 pixels. The camera and lighting have a compact footprint and mounting system to allow integration with common inserters and transports. The software provides for integrity checking, logging and matching of IMB codes, numbers and alphanumerics along with graphic and logo recognition.
Common applications include verification and matching of UPS Intelligent Mail Barcodes, document form numbers, envelope types and verification of logos - all in line with an inserter or other production device. The Output Camera System will also manage inserter pocket verification, double-insert detection, sequence verification and control a high-speed divert system for uptime optimization. The MCS Line Scan and Output Camera System are fully compatible with Perfect Match 6.0 systems. In addition, MCS' full line of camera solutions provide logging/auditing of production information including time and date for all pieces.
These features enable production mailers to conform to the rising demands of integrity in the industry. The increase of sensitive information in the mail stream along with marketers demanding full accounting of solicitations has raised the level of integrity and accountability in most mailing campaigns.
MCS President and CEO, David Loos, commented on the new Line Scan Camera for the Output Camera System : "About fifty percent of the mailing companies I speak with have been faced with losing a customer or job because of an actual, or perceived, error in mail integrity." Loos continued: "This addition to our product line helps prevent these errors for a wider variety of jobs - and at the highest production levels."
