List of Handsets Preloaded With QR Reader Continues to Grow

By Joe Barber, Chief QR Officer at the CodeZQR division of Computer Output Print & Internet (COPI)

The list of manufacturers supporting QR Codes continues to grow.  LG recently announced that they will be pre-loading the ScanLife reader on all their new camera phones worldwide.  LG is the third largest manufacturer of cell phones in the world having shipped over 100 million handsets in 2008.

The LG announcement comes on the heels of the launch of the Apple 3G I-Phone and the HTC/Google G1 phone last year.  These handsets both support QR Code readers and their users have been utilizing these applications in large numbers.  Nokia and Samsung have also been shipping many models with QR Code readers pre-loaded for several months.

Since over 80% of all handsets sold in North America today have a camera, the pre-loading of the readers on the phones makes a lot of sense for the manufacturers and the carriers.  It adds a tremendous utility to the phone.

Now that so many people have the tools needed read QR Codes, it should only be a matter of time before marketers start to utilize this communications tool to an even greater degree.

Based on the excitement surrounding CodeZ QR I think that day will be here real soon.
