Dereli Graphics Finalizes Orders for 21 KODAK CTP Devices at drupa

Highlights clear trend towards digital technology in rapidly growing Turkish market

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY, June 11 — In a move that highlights how important digital technology has become in the Turkish market, Dereli Graphics, Kodak’s Istanbul-based distributor finalized orders for 21 CTP devices at drupa 2008.

Dereli Graphics is a long established company, serving not only commercial printers but also packaging and digital printers in Turkey, and has been working together with Kodak for just one year.

“The breadth of the Kodak digital portfolio and the quality, reliability and consistency across the range that these devices bring to the market, has shown our Turkish customers the advantages of moving to digital,” comments Mr Ahmet Dereli, owner of Dereli Graphics. “We believe that this is just the beginning, and that many other Turkish printers will follow suit after the sale of this number of devices during the drupa exhibition.”

The twenty-one CTP devices that have been sold are a mixture of the KODAK MAGNUS 400 Platesetters; KODAK MAGNUS 800 Platesetters; a KODAK MAGNUS VLF Platesetter; KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS Thermal Platesetters, and a KODAK THERMOFLEX Wide Platesetter featuring the sleeve option.

The KODAK MAGNUS 400 Platesetter is a productive 4-page CTP device using Kodak’s Thermal Imaging Technology, delivering high throughput, efficient plate handling, and ease of use for commercial printers. It images 16 or 21 plates/hr. with optional advanced automation.

The MAGNUS 800 Platesetter is a B1 device which provides high-quality imaging using KODAK technology and produces up to 40 plates per hour. New engineering and software deliver greater performance and reduced downtime. The modular design allows for advanced automation with an autoloader with a single-cassette unit holding 100 plates or a multi-cassette unit that can hold up to 500 plates. A semi-automatic device is also available, featuring ContinuousLoad that allows for continuous platemaking.

The KODAK MAGNUS VLF QUANTUM Platesetter produces quality imaging with repeatability, reliability, improved functionality, and increased speed for large commercial and packaging printers. It is one of the fastest fully-automated VLF Platesetters on the market, capable of imaging 27 80-inch plates an hour. Featuring premium KODAK SQUARESPOT Thermal Imaging Technology with 10,000 dpi optical resolution, the VLF CTP device delivers the sharpness and consistency to enable high-linescreen or FM screening.

The KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS Thermal CTP Device comes in five speeds, ranging from 60 to more than 240 plates per hour to suit newspaper printing facilities of all sizes. It delivers fast, reliable imaging with a standard file format interface for newspaper production systems. It is available with semi-automatic or fully automated plate loading and unloading. The machine-to-machine accuracy of KODAK SQUARESPOT Thermal Imaging Heads, combined with the binary nature of thermal imaging, achieves consistent and repeatable halftone dot structures.

The KODAK THERMOFLEX Platesetters are available in Narrow, Mid, and Wide formats, and give printers and converters outstanding imaging quality and process control. All devices feature industry leading imaging systems, including KODAK HYPERFLEX Ready Imaging Technology for flexo, to deliver high impact, repeatable print results. In sleeve mode, the THERMOFLEX Wide Platesetter supports both seamless photopolymer sleeves as well as digital plate-on-sleeve imaging applications. The unique quick-change feature enables a single operator to switch the THERMOFLEX Device from sheet mode to sleeve mode in a matter of minutes, without the need for any auxiliary equipment.

Media Trust Ltd. has over 300 employees and publishes the national newspaper, The Daily Trust, in northern Nigeria. The company also operates a commercial printing business.

UK’s Printhaus Orders KODAK MAGNUS 800 QUANTUM Platesetter at drupa

Printhaus takes workflow to the next level with latest versions of the KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System and KODAK INSITE Portal Products

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY, June 7— Printhaus, a leading U.K. commercial printer, ordered a new KODAK MAGNUS 800 QUANTUM Platesetter at drupa 2008. The Northampton business that delivers everything from creative concepts to direct mail and fulfillment, also signed on to upgrade to KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System Version 4.0 with connections to KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal System to improve web communication and collaboration with customers.

“Printhaus promises our customers that we’ll stay ahead of the technology curve. These investments will further improve our productivity and help us meet even tighter turn around times,” said Kelly Harris, Managing Director, Printhaus. “The new PRINERGY System with connectivity to INSITE Software will keep us keep moving with our customers’ requirements to do more business over the Internet. We’ll be able to link with our existing MIS system, so we expect to automate many processes.”

The KODAK MAGNUS 800 QUANTUM Platesetter employs a new, advanced thermal head that generates double the laser power of earlier MAGNUS Platesetters. The new thermal head not only increases the speed of plate production, but also provides broader imaging latitude and higher stability in case of plate sensitivity variations. KODAK Platesetters utilize KODAK SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology to minimize the impact of routine prepress variations, and deliver stable and reliable plates that stay within tight print manufacturing tolerances.

The KODAK MAGNUS 800 QUANTUM Platesetter has an output capacity of up to 60 eight up plates per hour and uses KODAK STACCATO Screening for high quality color reproduction. Printhaus will also be deploying the KODAK Multi-Cassette Unit, which can hold up to 500 plates at a time. The company is looking forward to improved productivity, automation and imaging performance from this new installation.

For Printhaus, which is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2009, the MAGNUS 800 QUANTUM Platesetter and PRINERGY software purchases are the next step in a long partnership with Kodak. Printhaus was the site of the first U.K. commercial installation of the PRINERGY System in 2000 and has been making plates on KODAK Platesetters for years.

“We’ve got a long history with Kodak, so we’re looking forward to the reliability and consistency of Kodak service that we know comes with these investments,” Harris said.

MPG Impressions Places drupa Order for KODAK MAGNUS 800 Platesetter

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY, June 6 — UK sheet-fed printer MPG Impressions has signed an order at drupa for a new KODAK MAGNUS 800 Platesetter along with an upgrade to its current KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal System and KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System, which will enable an extremely high level of workflow automation to be implemented at the Chessington site.

“We’ve had tremendous reliability from our existing KODAK Platesetter, which has output more than 350,000 plates during the last six years,” says managing director Mark Croucher. “We’ve also had first class service from Kodak, so it was the obvious choice for this latest investment. The KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System is already at the heart of MPG Impressions, and is regarded by many in the industry as the most reliable internal file format on the market. It drives not only our CTP facilities but our EPSON inkjet proofing equipment as well as our presses.

“With PRINERGY Workflow System Version 4.0, including Kodak’s digital connectivity software, we will be able to implement an even higher level of efficiency, while Kodak’s intelligent Rules Based Automation feature will allow us to easily achieve effective automation at every level. This will include sending work to the digital presses with greater efficiency and integrating the job details held on our OPTIMUS MIS to create a more effective overall prepress workflow. We already operate a KODAK MATCHPRINT Inkjet Proofing System and with our prepress, digital proofing, litho and digital printing facilities all accurately color calibrated, we are able to provide a very versatile print service to the benefit of customers.”

MPG Impressions is one of the largest independent litho and digital sheetfed printers in the UK. During the last two years it has been significantly expanding its customer base, which now includes corporate, commercial and design agency clients as well as directory, fine art and publications work. The company, which has gained ISO14001, FSC and PEFC accreditation, operates a comprehensive selection of multi-color B1 HEIDELBERG presses, including eight and ten-unit models.

“We operate in a sector where quality, productivity and reliability are taken as given and areas such as the environment and sustainability are major issues amongst today’s print buyers,” says Mark Croucher. “This is why technologies such as Kodak’s SQUARESPOT Thermal Imaging is so important, because it provides a level of consistent quality that reduces wastage during press makeready and ensures stability during the print run.”

First UK Sale of New KODAK GENERATION NEWS System is made at drupa 2008

UK’s Archant Print selects two thermal digital platestters to increase speed and throughput, and attain ability to print FM Screening using Staccato

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY, June 5 — Kodak has announced the first UK customer for its new GENERATION NEWS System – Kodak’s new thermal computer to plate (CTP) solution. Norwich based media company Archant, the UK's largest independently-owned regional media business, placed the order for two Z Speed variants on Kodak’s booth at drupa - the world’s largest printing exhibition. The investment also comprises the powerful open standards workflow management system, KODAK NEWSMANAGER and KODAK PRINERGY EVO Software, a powerful PDF workflow management tool for high performance newspaper prepress, which enables a flexible, automated workflow from edition plan to plate production.

Archant, which already uses KODAK NEWSETTER Systems and KODAK THERMALNEWS GOLD Digital Plates, made the investment in the advanced GENERATION NEWS Systems in order to increase capacity and maximize throughput of its newly expanded facility.

Archant Print’s Managing Director Nick Schiller says, “Recent expansion of our print operation required increased capacity and redundancy, so we took the decision to strengthen our existing technology with Kodak’s new GENERATION NEWS Systems.”

The GENERATION NEWS Platesetter has multiple plate cassettes, enabling fast plate loading and unloading of multiple plate sizes. The system can load up to 1600 broadsheet plates or 800 panorama plates while running continuously with no operator intervention. Integrated plate size selection, slip sheet removal, and three point registration are all automated to eliminate errors.

“Archant was the first company in the UK to install Kodak’s NEWSETTER System and we are pleased to once again be the first to purchase Kodak’s next generation of thermal platesetter”, continues Schiller. “We have always been extremely impressed with thermal technology and this latest investment in Kodak’s breakthrough GENERATION NEWS System is set to further strengthen our capabilities as each platesetter will enable us to image 268 broadsheet plates per hour at 391mm width and at 1270 dpi.

“As a high-performance newspaper printer, it is also vital that our entire workflow is managed efficiently. The impressive attributes of KODAK NEWSMANAGER Software will afford us further new productivity enhancing benefits by automating and managing the production of plates, thereby delivering greater versatility and freeing up resources”, he adds.

The GENERATION NEWS Platesetter also features Kodak’s unique Squarespot Thermal Imaging Technology, which has been adopted from the commercial environment and provides consistent dot accuracy and tonal stability. This enables Archant to achieve up to 200 lpi and implement KODAK STACCATO Screening Technology.

This is set to deliver further benefits to Archant’s print operations by enabling higher screen rules; sharper linework; excellent reverse type and legibility. The Thermal technology minimizes early dot wear on the plate and eliminates variation found in visible light and UV systems.

“Now that ‘semi-commercial’ printing has become an unstoppable trend in future newspaper press investments, this type of solution will become invaluable”, says Jack Knadjian, Vice President Publishing Market Segment, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. “The GENERATION NEWS System will provide our customers with the quality and stability they require, without having to sacrifice the productivity and plate automation that are demanded for newspaper deadlines. As such, it offers a ‘no compromise solution’ that combines the best attributes of both visible light and thermal systems.”

The KODAK GENERATION NEWS Systems will be installed at Archant’s Norwich printing facility, which together with its Ipswich site, prints the majority of the group's newspaper titles and offers a contract print service. As a whole, the Archant Group employs 2600 people throughout England and has an annual turnover of £194 million.

DocBridge Pilot Highlighted at drupa

Compart will be a sponsor of the drupa Innovation Parc with a booth in the Document Management section (Stand 7.01/Hall 7) from the 29th of May until the 11th of June in Düsseldorf Germany. DocBridge Pilot will be highlighted, Compart’s flagship solution for postal and production optimization with multi-channel delivery capabilities.

And secondly, Compart has recognized and leveraged this trend over the years by shifting its focus towards output management. DocBridge Pilot enables both the print service providers and print centers new planning and organizational control in their day to day production. No matter the run size, DocBridge Pilot can recognize print files and formatted output on a document level, then optimize, convert, process and post the output, securing a leadership position in the output management field.

As part of the output management focus, Compart is also represented at the PDF/A Competence Center and the AFP Consortium stands. The enables visitors to see the different ways Compart can enable efficient archival, enterprise output and full color workflow support throughout the Document Management Parc.

Pitney Bowes’ Emtex® Software Introduces Production Intelligence™ Architecture to Link Print and Mail for a More Efficient Mailstream Workflow

Integrated end-to-end solutions capture intelligence at every touch point, transforming business intelligence into real value

Kings Langley, UK, 20 May 2008 — Pitney Bowes Emtex Software, the leading provider of Output Management (OM) and Automated Document Factory (ADF) solutions, announces the new Production Intelligence architecture. Production Intelligence provides a new strategic architecture to integrate print and mail workflow to improve document production control, integrity and efficiency. It automatically gathers real-time data about every aspect of a print and mail operation and connects islands of information, enabling operations to schedule, control, track and manage jobs, resources, devices and operators. Print and mail operations can now use a single dashboard to control, manage and track production workflow and measure performance and enforce benchmarks for productivity, service level commitments and compliance requirements.

Until recently, even the most forward thinking print and mail operations attempted to tackle document production improvement initiatives as two separate departments, focused on collecting critical print and mail data to derive key performance indicators to maximize performance. However, most are often stopped short due to manually intensive data collection processes, lack of data consistency, and the need for internal IT assistance.

The Production Intelligence architecture is designed to expedite and facilitate efficiency and integrity across the production print and mail environment and to the enterprise for an optimized mailstream so business users can spend less time looking for information. The new platform integrates production print and mail environments by unifying diverse production control systems so every mail piece can be identified, tracked, routed across its lifecycle, from printing and inserting to reprinting, tracking and delivery. As a result, the collection, monitoring and tracking across both environments provides key stakeholders with critical job workload planning and modeling tools, job and resource forecasting and scheduling, SLA management, and end–to-end job and mail-piece tracking.

“As customer communications become more challenging, and as production processes get more complex, the Production Intelligence architecture unifies and automates business-critical processes and helps companies capture the business intelligence to accelerate performance and profits. Facilities can fine tune their workflow to unlock productivity and create a super-efficient mail stream,” said Pete D’Amato, Vice President of Global Marketing and Product Management

With the new architecture in place, operations can centralize scheduling, tracking and management of jobs, resources, devices and operators. A single dashboard provides a unified view of the full print and mail operation. The result is a simplified way to detect inefficiencies and errors. Operations can improve productivity, eliminate waste, achieve better resource utilization, grow capacity, increase profitability and reduce costs.

The new Production Intelligence architecture is available today.

Rich set of application technologies to accelerate production management and simplify job preparation

KINGS LANGLEY, UK, 6 May 2008 — Pitney Bowes Emtex Software, the leading provider of Output Management (OM) and Automated Document Factory (ADF) Management Solutions, expands its Production Intelligence™ architecture with Management Information System (MIS) Solutions for the transactional workflow environment. The first of many innovative featured-rich capabilities under the MIS Solutions offering as part of the new Production Intelligence architecture for the print-to-mail environment will be introduced inside the Pitney Bowes stand (Hall 4, Stand C23, Software Pavilion) at drupa 2008 - the world’s leading exhibition for the print media industry on May 29 - June 11, 2008 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The new solutions under the MIS Solutions umbrella include the P/I Wizard, P/I Scheduler and P/I Job Profiler. Together, these new products set the stage for new levels of enterprise intelligence not previously possible for the high-volume transactional market. Print and mail operations will be better able to address their daily business challenges; from optimizing workflow management processes to simplifying job preparation, easing the migration from monochrome to color applications, support for TransPromo migration, accelerated process automation, intelligent tracking, production forecasting, planning and scheduling, to production analysis and reporting.

The P/I Wizard, an intuitive document-driven browser-based interface simplifies job preparation for color, TransPromo and other applications. Users can apply barcodes, create piece-level tracking files, and index print files for processing integrity and regulatory compliance. Organizations achieve quality control with intelligent finishing and automated reprint processing. Users can easily create trans-promotional applications by taking advantage of pre-planned or remnant white space for targeted messaging. Legacy applications can be transformed into trans-promotional documents without any change to composition processes.

With P/I Scheduler, users can more accurately forecast, plan and schedule work using comprehensive job profiles and historical performance data. Production intelligence automatically updates as jobs progress from start to finish. Real-time analysis of performance indicators improves the speed, agility, responsiveness and effectiveness to help operations running at peak efficiency. Simplified workflow and process modeling help stakeholders apply “what-if” scenarios to help plan workflows to improve profitability and use assets and resources more effectively.

Businesses can now gain critical insight into job characteristics, print operation performance and efficiency with the P/I Job Profiler; providing in-depth, drilled down metrics for print job accounting at the image and/or sheet level, enabling companies to unlock the value of production data to achieve better process management.

“Our portfolio of Production Intelligence offerings with MIS Solutions, Output Management and ADF Management Solutions represent the most comprehensive architecture available to help customers optimize efficiency and integrity across the entire print and mail production environment,” said Peter D’Amato, Vice President of Global Marketing and Product Management. “With our MIS Solutions, businesses can leverage production intelligence to quickly make critical business decisions. Kodak Expands V-Series Inkjet Portfolio at drupa 2008 to Serve Mid Volume Data Centers

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY, Jan. 17-The latest expansion of the KODAK VERSAMARK V-Series Printing Systems portfolio brings higher resolution to Kodak's inkjet line and provides an affordable solution for the mid volume range of bill and statement producers.

The new KODAK VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System targets data centers with volumes of more than 1 million images per month of transactional, promotional and TransPromo documents, such as billing, account statements and direct mail. It operates at maximum production capacity of 1,090 A4 (letter sized) impressions per minute.

Launching at drupa 2008, the VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System employs drop-on-demand print technology with image resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, and eliminates the redundant process of printing full color shells for transactional statements and bills, reducing cost and production time.

The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System provides a cost effective solution for data center printers that serve their customers with short runs of high quality documents, as well as long run transaction and promotional materials. Low operational costs make this system particularly economical for applications like multipage financial statements, credit card bills and telecommunications invoices.

"The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System offers high print quality, low running costs, and mid volume production capability. It is the perfect complement to the VERSAMARK VT3000 Printing System and its high volume, ultra low cost position," said Ronen Cohen, Vice President, Inkjet Printing Solutions, Kodak's Graphic Communications Group (GCG). "As a scaleable solution provider, the VL2000 System will serve the current needs of mid volume data centers and Kodak will provide an easy path to the next level V series system as their volume requirements grow."

With roll to roll operation, the VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System can print images as wide as 18.67 inches, with a web speed of 250 feet per minute. United States and Canada list price for a two-up simplex configuration is expected to be less than $1.60 million. US&C list price for a two-up duplex configuration is expected to be less than $2.95 million.

The system supports the most common transactional and promotional print streams and is backed by Kodak's color management expertise. The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System requires a low level of operator involvement due to advancements in the user interface and system design.

"Data center customers can choose the KODAK System that's right for their operation from the industry's most economical solutions for a wide variety of print applications that require full variable data capability, such as TransPromo communications," said Pat McGrew, Data Center and Transaction Segment Evangelist, Inkjet Printing Solutions, GCG. "Kodak's experience with inkjet technology and color management meets the needs of today's expanding data center printing operations. Whether their production needs are in the thousands or millions of personalized statements, Kodak serves as a single solution source for mid and high-volume print providers."

The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System will be at Kodak's stand, D01, in hall 5 at drupa 2008. KODAK Products are backed by KODAK Service and Support. The company's stand, D01, in Hall 5 will showcase a wide range of hardware and software innovations that generate revenue, profit, growth, and business opportunities for print service providers and their clients, reinforcing print's role at the heart of successful communications campaigns under the banner of "print is powerful."

"We are excited about going to drupa 2008 with such a strong range of new products and featuring our complete Graphic Communications Group portfolio for the first time at a drupa event," said Philip J. Faraci, President and Chief Operating Officer, Eastman Kodak Company. "We listen carefully to our customers, and their requirement for a certain standard of quality, reliability and throughput, together with a known cost of operation, has been the driver for us in delivering offset class solutions to help them grow their businesses and take advantage of new profit opportunities."

Kodak is the only supplier with conventional and digital solutions operating within a comprehensive and proven unified workflow that intelligently automates and integrates business, data, color and production processes to provide customers with the highest levels of efficiency. In addition to its products and services for the commercial printing market, Kodak's exhibit at drupa 2008 will include scanners and software for document imaging applications.

Featured Solutions: Digital Printing

The KODAK NEXPRESS S3000, S2500 and S2100 Digital Production Color Presses bring a new level of modularity to the digital production color market, offering flexible front end options, input and output accessories, unique security application capabilities and on site upgradeability.

Small to mid-sized print providers that want to efficiently and productively produce short run digital color work, as well as incorporate variable data and in-line finishing, can choose from new accessories for the KODAK NEXPRESS M700 Digital Color Press. Options include a feeder module, finisher, saddle stitcher, booklet trimmer, puncher unit, document inserter unit, and a high capacity delivery configuration.

An extensive line of new front-end systems for NEXPRESS Presses, new versions for the KODAK NEXPRESS V and KODAK NEXPRESS Vp Front Ends, and a new NEXPRESS Vcs Front End will also be on display. The NEXPRESS V and Vp Front Ends, using the ADOBE PDF Print Engine, and the NEXPRESS Vcs Front End, using software from Kodak's Print On Demand Solutions (PODS) Group, fit seamlessly with the widest range of workflow applications.

The NEXPRESS S-Series Presses, namely the NEXPRESS S3000 and S2500 Presses, as well as the NEXPRESS M700 Press, will be on display. Glossing, fifth color option, and software and substrate flexibility make NEXPRESS Presses ideal for applications requiring outstanding quality, such as annual reports and photobooks. NEXPRESS Presses benefit from the KODAK Unified Workflow solutions and the unparalleled Operator Replaceable Component product architecture, which enables printers to optimize margins and productivity.

Print providers in the production cut-sheet black and white market can integrate new workflows, expand finishing services, and improve the overall reliability of their black and white operations with enhancements to the KODAK DIGIMASTER EX Digital Production Systems. New Print Production Software improves workflow efficiency by providing support for JDF capability, while expanded support for the integration of the KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System 5.0 extends connectivity to all digital production systems with a range of powerful new features designed for the specific demands of digital applications. New features include Smart Lists, a revolutionary job queue management tool designed to optimize productivity and provide operators with total bidirectional job visibility down to the KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Color Production Presses.

Print engine enhancements designed to improve overall performance to the DIGIMASTER EX Digital Production Systems also enable the ability to print on a wide variety of substrates. The addition of the Watkiss SpineMaster accessory to the DIGIMASTER EX System's booklet maker allows printers to finish documents with a high quality, professional appearance without the additional cost of perfect binding.

Inkjet Printing Systems
Through innovative technology enhancements in color, speed and quality, high volume inkjet printing has expanded into a wide range of applications such as direct mail addressing and imprinting, barcoding, newspapers, packaging, book printing and TransPromo communications.

Kodak will demonstrate the next generation of continuous inkjet technology as it displays the KODAK Stream Concept Press publicly for the first time at drupa 2008. The higher resolution, smaller ink droplet size, and faster generations of drops involved in Stream Technology will take inkjet technology to offset class quality, productivity and cost.

With Stream Technology, mild heat fluctuations of the surface of the ink results in the formation of ink droplets at high speed. Capable of producing 2,500 A4 (letter sized) pages per minute, Stream Technology uses pigment inks to provide permanence on coated papers and a range of other commercial printing substrates.

The latest expansion of the KODAK VERSAMARK V-Series Printing Systems portfolio brings higher resolution to Kodak's inkjet line and provides an affordable solution for the mid volume range of bill and statement producers. The new KODAK VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System targets data centers with volumes of more than 1 million per month of transactional, promotional and TransPromo documents, such as billing, account statements, and direct mail. The VERSAMARK VL2000 System employs drop-on-demand print technology with image resolution of 600 x 600 dpi and operates at maximum production capacity of 1,090 A4 (letter sized) impressions per minute.

KODAK Stream Concept Press and the VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System will be driven by new front ends from Kodak's PODS Group.

Another growth segment, hybrid applications, utilizes inkjet print heads mounted on offset presses to place variable data on materials as they're printed.

Featured Solutions: Prepress
Kodak's broad range of prepress solutions¸ including proofing systems, CTP platesetters, digital plates, and the widely accepted KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System for offset and flexographic printing, will be on display at drupa 2008.

Kodak offers digital halftone, inkjet and virtual proofing systems. The KODAK APPROVAL NX Digital Color Imaging System will be on display with a new set of extended gamut donors that meet the demanding needs of packaging customers. Additionally, Kodak will unveil new features of KODAK Proofing Software that allow customers in the commercial and packaging segments to successfully proof the most challenging color jobs both on popular inkjet printers and with the KODAK APPROVAL Digital Color Proofing System.

Kodak will also show a number of its industry leading solutions for digital plate production, including KODAK MAGNUS and TRENDSETTER Platesetters. KODAK Platesetters utilize KODAK SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology to provide exceptionally high resolution images and superior imaging stability. In addition, KODAK STACCATO Screening offers high fidelity, continuous tone images that exhibit fine detail and an extended color gamut.

At drupa 2008, Kodak will unveil the fastest and most productive addition to its KODAK MAGNUS 800 Platesetter line. The KODAK MAGNUS 800Z QUANTUM Platesetter images up to 60 8-page plates per hour at the highest image quality available in the industry. In addition, the platesetter has a new, advanced thermal head that generates double the laser power of its MAGNUS Platesetter predecessors.

In response to the emergence of the extremely wide format market and the adoption of presses with formats as wide as 80 pages and beyond, Kodak will introduce an XLF platesetter in the first quarter of 2008. The KODAK MAGNUS XLF 80 QUANTUM Platesetter supports extremely large formats up to 80 pages. The MAGNUS XLF 80 Platesetter is based on the market leading KODAK MAGNUS VLF Platesetter, which is the fastest fully automated very large format platesetter on the market. The MAGNUS XLF 80 Platesetter will offer all of the features that are critically important to wide format commercial printing operations, including high speeds of up to 48 plates per hour at resolutions of 2,400 dpi.

For packaging converters, Kodak is expanding the capabilities of the KODAK FLEXCEL NX Digital Flexographic System. The FLEXCEL NX System will now be able to produce plates up to a maximum size of 800 x 1067 mm, allowing converters to use it for a broader range of applications. The FLEXCEL NX Digital Flexographic System is designed to deliver greater latitude on press, improving the consistency and repeatability of the printed result. Capable of high resolution flexographic printing, it provides previously unachievable offset class print quality on a wide variety of substrates, including paper, flexible film, foil, and label stock.

Kodak is a global leader in digital plates and at drupa will demonstrate significant advances that strengthen this position. Visitors will be able to see the latest innovations in Kodak's no preheat positive plate technology.

In addition, drupa visitors will see technology advances that support sustainability. Currently, KODAK THERMAL DIRECT Non Process Plates help customers reduce environmental impact by eliminating the need for a plate processor and processing chemistry. Customers can lower their water and electricity usage and remove the negative environmental impacts of chemistry transportation and disposal. Building on the success of THERMAL DIRECT Non Process Plates, Kodak will expand the family of plates that support sustainability. New plate technologies will allow a broader group of printers to move toward a positive green footprint and extend the non process technology to other segments of the printing industry.

In addition to introducing new CTP solutions, Kodak announces that it will expand its plate manufacturing facility in Xiamen, China, with the addition of a second production line. Opened just two months ago, the state of the art facility produces both digital and conventional printing plates. The opening and expansion of the Xiamen facility is in response to the growing demand for KODAK Plates worldwide, as well as part of Kodak's commitment to provide plate production close to customers and tailor product to local needs.

Featured Solutions: Unified Workflow
Kodak's efficient, comprehensive Unified Workflow solutions, which intelligently automate and integrate business, data, color and production processes for both conventional and digital production, will be featured at drupa 2008.

A series of new features and functions in the KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System 5.0 allows users to process static and variable data printing (VDP) jobs through the same workflow, manage end to end color on multiple devices, and automate complex routines in print production workflows. GWS signs contract with El País for the supply of a 32-page heatset press

Graphic Web Systems, the Dutch supplier of web presses, technological solutions and turnkey projects, has signed a deal with El País of Uruguay for the supply of a 32-page heatset press. Herewith El País and GWS have intensified the already existing partnership.

Last year El País placed an order with GWS for the supply of a double width MAN Colorman press. This press will be delivered in the third quarter of 2008.

Initially El País had planned to equip the Colorman with a heatset application or UV drying system for its insert and commercial production. A thorough study proved that the installation of a separate commercial heatset press would be more economic and would give a better quality product. GWS will supply a Goss M850 32-page press to be installed at the new to be erected newspaper printing facilities of El País.

Eric van Kessel, Commercial Director at GWS: "We truly believe that there is a market for the supply and retrofit of drying systems to newspaper presses, but in most cases it is hard to find the technical and economical justification to live with a compromised solution somewhere between coldset and heatset. In most of the studies we carried out, a used stand-alone heatset press proofs to be the better solution from a technical and economical perspective. The study at El País turned out to be no exception. The supply of this heatset press gives a clear split between coldset and heatset production. It will give a higher print quality and the press system will certainly be utilised for subcontracted printing jobs which could not be printed on a hybrid double width newspaper press".

The Goss M850 is currently being reconditioned at the GWS facilities in the Netherlands and will be ready for delivery at the end of the summer of 2008.

Standard Horizon Features Intelligent Post Press Automation at drupa

(Andover, Massachusetts) – Under the theme “Think Intelligent Automation,” Horizon International will showcase a broad range of highly automated post press solutions at drupa 2008 in Dusseldorf, Germany. With headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, Horizon has 550 employees and operates the largest facility in the world devoted to manufacturing folders, binders, collators, stitchers and cutters.

“Intelligent Automation” refers to Horizon’s longstanding development philosophy, built on deep technical expertise in all finishing processes combined with a comprehensive understanding of the critical operator steps needed to produce professional-quality cut sheets, folded signatures, saddlestitched booklets, and perfect bound books.

For example, some automated folders still require an operator to measure each panel and input the dimensions before the changeover can begin. “Intelligent” Horizon AFC folders use an intuitive, icon-based color touchscreen that prompts the operator for sheet size and desired fold pattern. Using this data solely, the folder calculates all necessary set-ups and can perform a fully-automated changeover in under 30 seconds.

“Horizon has an outstanding reputation as a world-class innovator in post press,” says David Reny, Managing Director, Standard Finishing Systems, Horizon’s exclusive North American distributor. “Best-in-class Horizon automation has brought new levels of labor-saving efficiency to bindery operations of all sizes, so customers are excited to see the latest developments.”

Horizon also brings intelligent control at the network level, with full JDF compliance, via the i2i Bindery Control System. Job parameters can be entered at a central control console and then called-up by any Horizon finisher on the network. Every machine on the Horizon stand at drupa will be i2i-connected, enabling fully-automated set-up, job tracking, productivity and work-in-progress statistics, error reports, and more. The Horizon i2i system can also be interfaced with most MIS systems for seamless JDF/JMF interoperability.

Horizon Folders at the Forefront
Standard Horizon folders are highly regarded world-wide for reliability, fold quality and performance. The line continues to grow, with important new folders and accessories slated to premier at drupa:

- AF-406T6A – small-format (maximum sheet size 15.7 x 25.6) 6-buckle folder with pile feed and suction head has an optional 6-buckle second unit that can be added straight or cross-wise. This provides application flexibility, especially for the insert, outsert, and pharmaceutical markets.

- AF-566F – six-buckle folder accepts sheets up to 21.9 x 33.4, includes pile feeder with suction head, and has an optional 4-buckle second unit that can be added straight or cross-wise for maximum application flexibility. This buckle-buckle format addresses an established need for the North American market.

- CCD-AFC / CCD-AF – CCD camera options for AFC folders enable sheet-by-sheet verification reading from the top, bottom, or both to insure 100% integrity of folded signatures inside and out. Any double-pulls off the press that slip into the bindery can be caught during folding. This eliminates the possibility that sheets printed one-side-only and folded image-side-out end up as blank book pages. This level of quality check assures ISO 9001 compliance.

The extensive fleet of other Standard Horizon fast-make-ready paper folders and accessories, all equipped with intelligent automation and touchscreen control, will also be shown.

Horizon Binders Break New Ground
Standard Horizon binders have captured a significant share of the short-run, print-on-demand book market with steady innovations which continue at drupa 2008. Building on the market success of the popular BQ-270 single-clamp binder, Horizon has added a large color touchscreen and an ergonomically-designed digital caliper, making the new BQ-270C even more efficient and productive than earlier models.

The Standard Horizon BQ-470 four-clamp binder, featuring interchangeable EVA / PUR adhesive tanks and unparalleled automation, now has two new accessories. Operators can use the SI-470 digital caliper to measure book thickness and automatically transfer this data to the binder for automated set-up. The other accessory is the new PM-470 Pre-melt tank, for operator convenience and longer runs between adhesive replenishment.

The complete Standard Horizon book binding product line will be on display, ranging from short-run print-on-demand binders up to the 15-clamp CABS 5000 production perfect binding line with in-line three-knife trimming.

Technology Demonstrations Offer a Window Into the Future
Horizon will also show technology demonstrations of a next-generation saddlestitcher and a new hardcover book system, which are expected to be commercially available sometime in 2009.

Horizon’s Biggest-ever drupa
drupa 2008 marks the largest-ever exhibit of Standard Horizon products in Europe, with nearly 13,000 square feet devoted to state-of-the-art finishing solutions. JDF interoperability will be demonstrated with industry-leading partners, and Horizon solutions will be shown on several partner stands, including HP Indigo, Pitney Bowes, Punch Graphics and Xerox. Attendees are invited to arrange a private equipment demonstration tailored to their application requirements by pre-registering for the Standard VIP Program at www.sdmc.com/drupa.

Lasermax Roll Systems Announces New High-Speed Stack System at drupa 2008

Ljungby, Sweden (April 30, 2008) – Lasermax Roll Systems will be demonstrating the first modules of its new LX700 product line for roll-fed digital printers at drupa 2008. This demonstration will be in their stand B61 in Hall 6 and will showcase significant advances in technology for cutting and stacking forms in-line with the fastest continuous feed digital printers.

“The LX700 product line is being developed to support the increasing requirements of new digital printers and the anticipation of even greater speed increases in the years ahead,” says Bill Carroll, President and CEO for Lasermax Roll Systems. “The system that will be shown in our stand at drupa also includes several new capabilities for handling lightweight paper in response to increasing needs by our customers.”

The LX700 is being designed and built around the highly successful LX500 platform. Since 2001, the LX500 products have provided unprecedented reliability to digital print operations. Today, the LX500 products have the largest market share worldwide (for digital pre and post-processing) and demand for the products continues to increase. “The ultimate introduction of the LX700 products to the market will expand on the proven technology of the LX500 products providing additional capabilities as well as ensuring speed compatibility with new digital printers in the years to come,” states Carroll.

Lasermax Roll Systems is currently developing two versions of cutting and stacking solutions for its new LX700 product line. The first is targeted at the commercial print market and has many special features designed to reliably cut and stack lightweight paper at very high speeds. This is the version that will be demonstrated in their stand at drupa 2008. The second version is targeted at both the commercial print and transactional markets to run applications in standard paperweights at high speeds or with frequent stack deliveries.

These LX700 stacking solutions will be capable of operating in-line with the highest speed roll-fed digital printers to produce 1-up, 2-up, 3-up or 2-up merged stacks from a wide range of media including lightweight paper with or without tractor feed holes. Both solutions use a new stack alignment section to guide sheets and separate 2-up or 3-up stacks. Jobs or book blocks can be automatically offset within the stacks for easy operator handling. New stacking technology also includes an internal accumulation during delivery cycles, which drastically reduces or eliminates the need for a large web-buffering device after the printer.

Operating at significantly higher speeds, the LX700 solutions will initially support printer speeds up to 600 feet per minute using improved rotary cutting technology for maximum reliability and accuracy. The cutter design includes a reject gate to divert “waste sheets” created during load routines, incomplete jobs, and with many of the current color digital printer models.

Many other productivity enhancements have been incorporated into the LX700 products with an overall design focus on maintaining maximum control of the paper through the entire web path both within product modules and the paper loops between modules.

The LX700 line will be capable of an in-line connection to third party finishing equipment to produce signatures, saddle-stitched booklets, perfect bound books or newspapers in-line with the printer. This is especially important to the commercial print market and to service bureaus to provide a complete end-to-end document solution.

As with the LX500 products, the LX700 line will continue to include user-friendly, touch-screen control panels, ergonomic designs with easy-to-reach operator adjustments, a guided support system, on-board diagnostics, and a UP3i compliant interface.

Lasermax Roll Systems is the worldwide leader in automated paper handling, processing, and vision-based quality control systems for digital print production. Its products are manufactured in Sweden and the USA, and are installed in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Lasermax Roll Systems Announces In-Line Punching / Perforating System

Ljungby, Sweden (April 30, 2008) – The Lasermax Roll Systems 300 Processor series in-line punching and perforating system for high-speed digital printers will be unveiled at drupa 2008. The 300 Processor series includes models that operate before or after the printer to punch tractor holes, cross perforations, vertical perforations, or even custom punching patterns.

“At drupa 2008, we expect continued momentum for roll-fed digital color printing technology,” says Hans Eliasson, Vice President of Engineering for Lasermax Roll Systems. “As these printers improve and become more accepted, we expect an increased demand in the market for in-line paper processing solutions. This will be driven by an expectation from our customers to eliminate their use of offset printed and processed forms.”

With digital color printing, customers will be able to purchase plain paper stock for all their jobs and can perform any required punching or perforating at the time of printing. Purchasing unconverted paper and processing in-line can result in significant paper savings. This will be especially important for Service Bureaus who stock pre-printed rolls for many different customers.

The availability of digital color printing will also accelerate the migration of standard statements into TransPromo applications, which can include personalized marketing offers, reply forms and coupons. The 300 Processor’s dynamic perforating capability will play an important role in maintaining the best possible appearance of the final TransPromo statement. Perforations are created only where needed and additional pages in the statement will not have excessive perforations.

The 300 Processor series currently includes four standard models, with capabilities including tractor hole punching, file hole punching, fanfold cross perforating, and dynamic cross and vertical perforating. Tractor holes or perforations in fixed intervals are created before the printer. Dynamic perforating for payment slips and coupons is performed after the printer. All models utilize a controlled paper infeed and outfeed section to maintain precise registration of the web.

Lasermax Roll Systems is the worldwide leader in automated paper handling, processing, and vision-based quality control systems for digital print production. Its products are manufactured in Sweden and the USA, and are installed in more than 50 countries worldwide.

"This exhibition clearly demonstrates EFI's dedication to leading the industry transition from analog to digital and from black & white to color printing. Visitors to our booth will find many ways to improve productivity and reduce cost, while at the same time generating new revenue streams with new customers and new applications as they 'Print to Win'."

EFI will also hold a press conference at drupa on May 29th at 1300 hours in Room 14, CCD South, Messe Düsseldorf. Company executives will discuss business strategy and results, overview the company's portfolio of integrated solutions, and make additional announcements. Visitors to the EFI stand will have the opportunity for hands-on demonstrations and discussions with EFI professionals to learn how the wide range of solutions listed below can have an unmatched positive impact on their businesses.

Fiery
EFI will showcase next-generation Fiery technology, already the industry's leading color digital print server with more than 15 million users worldwide.

The Fiery open platform readily integrates into any technology environment and delivers new revenue opportunities, such as high-value variable data printing (VDP), with more options than any other digital print server in the industry. It also serves as a gateway to third-party technologies and EFI products, such as Colorproof(tm) XF for proofing and Digital StoreFront® for web-to-print, as well as to EFI business management software and prepress solutions.

At drupa, EFI will feature first time demonstrations of the newest Fiery innovation to maximize customer efficiency, including Fiery integration with the Adobe® PDF Print Engine (APPE) and Microsoft® XPS support newly developed by EFI. The Fiery's APPE integration augments existing Fiery PDF support, adding choices for customers to natively support PDF transparency across their workflows and to precisely print PDF files that match what they see on the screen during the content creation process. The technology EFI has developed in-house to process Microsoft XPS ensures that Fiery users have the ability to print Microsoft Vista Office documents with improved transparency and colour rendering, as well as smaller file sizes that speed processing and minimize network congestion. EFI's color management system delivers consistent output across both the APPE and Microsoft XPS environments.

EFI will also announce new Fiery innovations in make-ready as well as enhancements to its intuitive user interface, and demonstrate new highly efficient, productive Fiery-driven workflows that solve customers' most difficult print production challenges. This next-generation print production server will be demonstrated in powerful combinations with Fiery® Central, EFI's production workflow, management and sophisticated make-ready solution; Splash® Mac OS X-based workflow solution; EFI® Color Profiler Suite, a profiling solution for graphic arts professionals; and MicroPress®, EFI's raster-based color and black & white workflow solution. These distinctive workflows include:

  • Professional Color Workflow, to optimize color from input to print. This demonstration features Fiery, Fiery® Graphic Arts Package Premium Edition, and Color Profiler Suite;
  • Automated Make-Ready & Production Color, featuring EFI MicroPress, demonstrating the efficient production of complex jobs;
  • Variable Data Solutions that unify variable data workflow, featuring Fiery and third-party VDP software from DirectSmile® and XMPie®;
  • Productive Document Workflows, featuring Fiery's Impose and Compose options for efficient editing and assembly of static and variable documents prior to RIPping for final output without the need to modify native files, including adding or deleting pages, preflighting to check for errors and late-stage PDF editing;
  • Unique Mac-Based Color Workflow, featuring Splash, Fiery, and the Impose and Compose options for a Mac workflow from Creation to Production;
  • Integrated Workflow Solution, featuring Fiery Central, Digital StoreFront®, PrintSmith(tm), Colorproof XF, and JDF integration, for efficient integration of job submission, management and printing.

EXHIBITOR REGISTRATION AT drupa 2008 REFLECTS INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS

Four months before the start of drupa 2008, print media trade fair, the exhibitor registration reflects the international market situation and industry developments. Consequently, the leading technology producing nations will be the most strongly represented countries at drupa 2008: Germany (745,100 sq. ft.), Italy (148,200 sq. ft.), the U.S. (142,600 sq. ft.), Switzerland (130,500 sq. ft.), Netherlands (99,100 sq. ft.), Japan (89,200 sq. ft.), the UK (80,000 sq. ft.), Belgium (70,800 sq. ft.) and Spain (68,600 sq. ft.). Exhibit space booked by emerging industrial countries such as China and India has increased considerably: by 300% for China (84,700 sq. ft.) and 60% for India (25,900 sq. ft.).

With over 1,800 exhibitors on over 1.8 million square feet of exhibit space, 400,000 expected visitors and some 3,500 journalists from around the world, drupa 2008 will be larger than ever before. “These figures once again underscore drupa’s status as the world’s No. 1 trade fair for the print and media industry,” commented Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. “No other event has as profound and all-encompassing an influence on the economics and technologies of the print media industry as drupa in Düsseldorf. What the Olympic Games mean to athletes is what drupa means to the print media industry.”

In the age of Internet and digital media, the competitiveness of print is a recurrent theme of discussion. But the facts show print to be as solid as ever. “Today more paper, cardboard, foil and other materials are printed than ever before. The annual global total is almost 500 million tons,” pointed out Albrecht Bolza-Schünemann, President of drupa 2008 and President of Koenig & Bauer AG. At drupa 2008, the international supplier industry will present an abundance of innovations, integrated solutions and market-ready refinements that could give printed products the edge in competition between the media. “The feel, emotional power and high quality of printed products provide a substantial competitive advantage over electronic media, for example, at the point of sale, in brand communications, personalized mailings and large-format advertising,” added Albrecht Bolza-Schünemann. In addition, new growth markets are opening up due to electronic printing (the keywords here are security printing and brand protection) and networked communications (e.g. interactive campaigns).

Whether sheet-fed or web-fed offset, gravure or label printing, digital or screen printing – all these technologies will be highlighted in XXL format at drupa 2008. With over 322,900 square feet of exhibit space reserved, this product category will be the largest, followed by bookbinding and print finishing on more than 118,400 square feet, prepress and pre-media (over 96,800 square feet) and packaging production/paper converting (over 80,300 square feet).

Compared to drupa 2004, the area for digital solutions has expanded by about 107,600 square feet of exhibit space. The two new halls 8a and 8b will play a central role in this segment. Together with Halls 5 and 9, this will be the stage primarily for exhibitors with a focus on this product category (e.g. Agfa-Gevaert, Canon, Eastman Kodak, Epson, Fujifilm, Hewlett-Packard, Konica Minolta, Ricoh Company, Xerox Corporation).

The other drupa 2008 pillars will be:

  • Halls 1 and 2: Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Polar-Mohr
  • Halls 3 and 4: printing, materials, services (e.g. Presstek Europe Ltd., Sakurai Graphic Systems Co.)
  • Hall 6: PrintCity with MAN Roland, its network partners and other international exhibitors active in print finishing
  • Halls 10 to 12: paper converting, packaging production (e.g. Bobst S.A.)
  • Halls 12 to 14: bookbinding, print finishing (e.g. Horizon International Inc., Müller Martini)
  • Halls 15 to 17: printing machinery, bookbinding and finishing (e.g. Cerrutti Officine, Ferag AG, Goss International, Koenig & Bauer AG, Kolbus GmbH & Co. KG, Komori International, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ryobi, Windmöller & Hölscher KG)
  • Hall 12: used machinery market with over 70 dealers

drupa 2008 ANCILLARY PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

Visitors to drupa 2008, print media trade fair, can look forward to a first-class ancillary program. Seminars, workshops, talks, individual tours of the trade fair as well as special presentations such as the “drupa innovation parc presented by HP” and “drupacube” add up to unparalleled knowledge transfer for international experts. “The ancillary programme is a key building block in the overall drupa concept and the ideal complement to the exhibitors’ technology offerings,” said drupa Project Director Manuel Mataré. The program’s individual building blocks are modular, allowing them to be freely combined according to visitors’ interests. “Our priority is achieving a target-group-specific appeal. Print buyers and those on the creative side, for instance, will be in their element at the drupacube while printing and media service providers will be able to ask specific production-related questions on the Highlights Tours. Decision makers will be able to probe new lines of business at the Compass Sessions. drupa has an appropriate answer to every question!” explained Manuel Mataré.

drupacube
With the drupacube, drupa 2008 will for the first time provide a special event aimed at the print buyer target group. Here the spotlight will be on printed products – with one key difference. At drupacube, the focus will be on marketing-driven applications for printed products - the technology that makes this possible will play a secondary role. This gives marketing and publishing directors, production managers, account executives and creative directors the possibility to get a compact overview of the potential of printing in the marketing mix. “With this tool, we intend to attract print buyers to drupa in greater numbers. Undoubtedly, many of the exhibitors also have products catering to this target group. But at a technology trade fair such as drupa, this type of information is often in danger of being overshadowed,” noted Manuel Mataré. “The drupacube acts as a portal for print buyers by providing concise infotainment on everything concerning print communications and directs them to the exhibitors’ stands.” Symposia and workshops will address the most diverse topics, with each day dedicated to a specific motto. For instance, one day will focus on newspapers and/or magazines, another day it will be on direct marketing, catalogs and corporate communications. Also planned are symposia addressing brand protection, green printing and the relationship between the arts and print. For more information, visit
www.drupacube.com.

drupa innovation parc
With its 160 exhibitors on some 32,000 square feet, the “drupa innovation parc presented by HP” in Hall 7.0 will be the hotspot for new software technologies which open the door to online interfaces and production opportunities for the printing industry. “Following the highly successful debut at the last drupa, we have optimized the concept and will be offering topic-based visitor guidance,” remarked Bernd Zipper, coordinator of the drupa innovation parc. The following eight theme parks will address the latest forward-looking technologies:

  • “printbuyer integration parc powered by AlphaPicture”
  • “creative production parc”
  • “jdf experience parc powered by Heidelberg”
  • “document management parc”
  • “pdf + xml production”
  • “digital picture parc”
  • “online communication parc”
  • “print + publishing parc powered by Agfa”

Talks, live demonstrations and daily special events will complement the dip exhibits.

Highlights Tours
In order to give trade visitors an overview of individual industry themes, guided tours highlighting current developments will take place. These topics will range from workflows, Web and print to offset and digital printing as well as packaging production and finishing. The Highlights Tours take visitors to six or eight selected exhibitors on each tour. In addition to German and English, the tours will for the first time also be conducted in Chinese, Spanish and French. In addition, the “Technology Guides” will provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant topic in brochure format. Exact dates for the tours and registration are available online at www.highlightstouren.de.

Compass Sessions
The Compass Sessions are two-hour intensive workshops staged daily on topics regarding technology and new lines of business in the printing industry. The themes will range from digital/inkjet printing, offset printing, pre-media and Web-to-print solutions to digital workflows, printed electronics and packaging printing. Each Compass Session will be devoted to a different theme. Held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and combined with a light breakfast, they form the ideal start for the drupa day. Further information can be found online at www.compass-sessions.de.

DOXNET on site
DOXNET, the independent European association for digital printing and document management professionals is inviting visitors to the “DOXNET on site” event in the Congress Center Düsseldorf (CCD-East) on June 4. Professor Frank Romano from the U.S. will speak on the latest trends in printing techniques, especially digital printing. Ralf Schlözer (Director of the On Demand Printing & Publishing Service Europe at InfoTrends, the digital printing and document management industry’s leading market research and consulting company) will discuss market trends and developments in the field of transpromos. Talks by major European users outside of Germany on the market situation and development opportunities in their relevant countries are also planned. DOXNET President Peter Dehm (T-Systems DDM GmbH) will report on the association’s activities and goals.

PEFC event: trend towards certified wood and paper products
Society’s growing concern about environmental and climate issues has led to a step-up in demand for certificates of origin. “Green procurement” – the sustainable acquisition of materials – is experiencing a boom in printing as well. As a result, demand for certified wood and paper products is on the rise. A similar trend is noticeable in the number of PEFC-certified printing operations which increased ten-fold in 2007 to 46. To do justice to this surge in interest, PEFC Deutschland will organize a comprehensive information event at drupa 2008 in the afternoon of June 10. Aside from an in-depth talk, activities will focus on discussions that address the topic from various different angles. Through this forum, PEFC aims to appeal primarily to representatives of the printing industry but also to production managers, advertising experts, publishers, logistics professionals and consultants. A concrete, targeted invitation, outlining the finalized program will be sent out before the start of drupa. The latest information can be found at www.pefc.de.

Fourth FSC Global Paper Forum in Düsseldorf
On June 9 and 10, the 4th FSC Global Paper Forum will be staged in during drupa 2008. The forum is an international get-together attended by FSC players from the worldwide paper and pulp sectors who gather to examine market opportunities. Forum discussions, workshops and information on all the latest developments in the FSC paper sector form part of the event. The following basic themes will be covered:

  • Success: good brands on good paper
  • Opportunities: bringing together supply and demand for FSC paper
  • The impact of FSC certification on forestry, conservation, trade and legislation
  • New FSC standards for the chain of custody

Further information can be obtained at www.writingthefuture.org

Print and media industry forum
Current market developments, entertaining panel discussions and the exchange of news and views with colleagues are central to the industry forum that will be staged by the German Printing and Media Industries Federation (bvdm) in cooperation with IKB Deutsche Industriebank AG on June 5 at 6:15 pm. High-calibre representatives of the print and media industry will present views from a range of different perspectives. Participation in the industry forum is free of charge, but those interested are asked to register. It is anticipated that the program and registration form will be available starting February 2008 at www.bvdm-online.de. The forum language will be German.

drupa 2008 to Feature “drupacube” for Print Buyers

For the first time, drupa 2008, print media trade fair, will offer a special event for print buyers: the drupacube. Just as in the other 19 exhibition halls, the spotlight at drupacube will also be on printed products – with one key difference: at drupacube, the focus will be on marketing-driven applications for printed products - the technology that makes this possible will play a secondary role. But at a technology trade fair such as drupa, this type of information is often in danger of being overshadowed,” explained Manuel Mataré, drupa Project Director. “The drupacube acts as a portal for print buyers by providing concise infotainment on everything concerning print communications and directs them to the exhibitors’ stands.”

The drupacube will feature symposia and workshops on a variety of topics, each day dedicated to a specific topic (for example one day will be dedicated to newspapers and/or magazines, another day to direct marketing, catalogues and corporate communications). Also planned are cross-sector symposia addressing themes such as brand protection, green printing and the relationship between the arts and print. “We plan to engage people in the topics they have to deal with every day,” commented Manuel Mataré. To ensure this, the relevant associations have been asked to assist with the planning and design. The following associations have already committed to the project: the German Direct Marketing Association (DDV), Forum Corporate Publishing (FCP) and the media production association (f:mp). Newspaper, magazine and free sheet publishers have also given their support to the concept. In addition, the drupa organizers are consulting with numerous drupa exhibitors on how their print-buyer-relevant information can be combined with the presentations in the drupacube.

The drupacube will be located in a pavilion off the fairgrounds but in its immediate vicinity – in front of the Congress Center South. The site of the drupacube sets it apart, making it clear that it serves as a separate access point to the trade fair for a specific target group. Integrated into the regular trade fair activity, it would have become another stop along the way instead of a portal.

The layout of the drupacube will make it possible to celebrate each of the print segments individually. During the day, new production technology for catalogues can be explored and at night, a party for those in charge of catalogues can be staged. This event concept can only be realized off the fairgrounds. By providing not only information but also stylish entertainment, the drupacube ties in perfectly with the city of Düsseldorf and its innovative Media Harbour.

Six Degrees of Separation

It is said that we are all connected by six degrees of separation. DRUPA created a new chain of six degrees when past and present owners of a Goss Community newspaper press met by chance on the Graphic Web Systems stand in Hall 6 C45.

Mr. Mahgoub Erwa, the owner of Al Sudani Newspaper in Sudan was on the GWS stand to sign off the commissioning of the six tower press when a previous owner, Fernando Sanz of RecoPrint came onto the stand. Eric van Kessel, Commercial Director at Graphic Web Systems was surprised but delighted by this chance meeting, “It looked like it was staged managed but I can assure everyone it wasn’t!” he said.

Graphic Web Systems had sold the press in 1997 to Snr. Sanz’s company in Madrid to contract print the Financial Times. The press had been a mixture of mono units and two highs but GWS re-configured it into a six tower press for this prestigious contract. RecoPrint sold the press in 2001 to another Madrid printer. When they decided to sell the press GWS were contacted to organise the sale.

For many years, GWS had been in close contact with the Sudanese newspaper Al Sudani, trying to help them overcome a most unusual production problem. The paper was printed in Jordan and had to be flown daily to the distribution centres in Sudan. Mr. Erwa’s wish was to bring production of the newspaper to Sudan but he needed a press capable of high colour content, which was proving difficult to find.

Naturally he was delighted therefore when GWS tipped him off that this Community was coming back onto the market. Despite opposition from South America and Eastern Europe, Mr. Erwa moved quickly to secure the press in a deal which included GWS being responsible for the dismantling and installation.
