Digital Co-Existence: It’s in Compart’s DNA

Digital Co-Existence: It’s in Compart’s DNA

By Carro Ford Weston

If DNA is the building block of life, then digital co-existence is the DNA behind everything Compart Software does.

Compart is known for software that helps companies with conversion of document data streams for better output management. Compart solutions like DocBridge Mill provide deployment flexibility and true platform portability. In other words, digital co-existence.

“We are highly focused on mission-critical, high performance enterprise print streams and formatted output. We are not comfortable with the 'integrated stereo' approach of doing a little of everything. Instead, we stay focused on our core competency,” explains Mark Maragni, Vice President of Sales, Compart North America.

This total concentration on digital print files and output formats makes no distinction whether customers are managing or combining mainframe B&W statement output, generating Windows customer service correspondence, creating Mac-based full color promotional material or even launching a hybrid transpromotion statement. Digital co-existence further realizes the promise of document output management by:

·         providing tools to optimize output for different channels

·         postal and production optimization

·         quick fix capability without rebuilding entire processes

Data is Core Strength

"We have the benefit of knowing there is a company out there that takes pride in being able to interpret and understand data” said Jose Gutierrez, Director of Implementations and Professional Services at EPSIIA Corporation. The company uses Compart DocBridge Mill to assist in managing complex structured print data from clients and prepare it for electronic archive and presentment. "They know data is their core strength and that is what they spend their time doing 100 percent."

“We are variable document-driven down to our DNA, making us fully accountable for all aspects of our solution,” Maragni explained. “Digital co-existence is central to our basic development philosophy.” Indeed, the foundation of Compart product architecture is based on digital co-existence. A single code base covers all PDLs and resource handling for consistent results on every operating system. Broad support for global standards includes Unicode, color handling, impositioning, PDF/A and more.

Co-existence with Accountability

Responsible digital co-existence starts with accountability: Compart directly develops and supports the DocBridge family of products with few exceptions. This unusual differentiator allows a high degree of product control and provides the flexibility to react to market changes or support the product without involving third parties.

This product philosophy is built around a German idea of “Fertigungstiefe” or vertical depth of knowledge, and it is realized by full control over all aspects of development. “The result of close ownership is internally developed products backed by our deep support bench. We live with these products from beginning to end,” said Maragni. Knowledge runs deep, and in fact, half the Compart team works in technical and development roles.

"Compart is dedicated to the data," said Gutierrez. "Their approach provides the flexibility to work within our established workflow." This translates into confidence that EPSIIA can in turn meet its customers’ data challenges and pursue new business opportunities.

Compart has one focus and one focus only – digital co-existence. As a result, customers can focus on their businesses, without worrying about the compatibility of their data.

Digital Co-existence and Business Flexibility

Businesses of all kinds use document composition tools to create more effective communications for direct marketing, statements and hybrid “transpromo” applications. We develop interactive and multi-channel communications to drive marketing and CRM campaigns. To personalize with relevance, we leverage information stored in ERP, CRM and legacy systems. And because of these sophisticated document strategies, we face an ever-more complex array of data formats. No matter what the application, channel or production environment, it involves bringing together many kinds of data.  And with the added pressure of economic uncertainty, using the resulting output effectively is critical.

For print production and data service providers, this is a daily challenge. Finding a way to seamlessly accept and manage any data format is imperative for maintaining a productive, profitable business. This requires “digital co-existence” where diverse data formats can co-function on production floors, across the customer base and between our vendors. Digital co-existence isn’t a buzzword. It’s a real requirement that customers of Compart Software know and appreciate.

Data-Neutral Output Management

Compart Software achieves digital co-existence through a data-neutral output management philosophy. Legacy, mainframe, promotional, archive and web-enabled traffic feed into the same integrated document production toolset. Service bureaus and PSPs can be ready to efficiently process their workflow, no matter what job big or small comes in through the door or the online storefront.

A flexibly deployed, data-neutral output management solution brings consistency and efficiency to management of older programmed applications, constantly changing variable applications and shifting organizational structures. Such control is possible when a production workflow can reliably recognize, aggregate, optimize and process almost any data stream on multiple operating systems, By taking the next step and orchestrating multiple data streams from a central point, companies also increase productivity, efficiency and accountability. Operations staff and call centers have more control over their work. They can make last-minute output or job priority changes without affecting applications or resources.

Compart software helps companies convert document data streams to achieve more precise output management. Output can be optimized for different channels, postal requirements and production efficiencies. Compart supports well over 20 input and output formats, an unmatched library that allows customers to work with almost any data stream. This unfettered format support gives print and data operations smooth, integrated workflow across their document and data handling processes.

Rich Functionality for Full Flexibility

When you can easily handle any type of data, you are empowered to take on business that would not be possible otherwise. Service providers can accept customer-provided files without lengthy re-engineering and programming trial and error. Banks can consolidate multiple production operations without roadblocks from integrating different data streams. “We couldn’t do what needed to be done for our financial customer without data conversion,” said Bill Nichols, Vice President of Marketing, Bluegrass Mailing. The company used Compart’s DocBridge Software to achieve the impossible for a banking customer. The bank had consolidated data streams from ten sites into one, and Bluegrass Mailing had no trouble using Compart software to convert the resulting data into manageable formats and production output.

Compart software solutions like DocBridge Pilot provide deployment flexibility and true platform portability to help companies operate with digital co-existence. DocBridge Pilot software universally accepts all documents and spooled print output, allows content modification and optimization, and then transforms data into practically any output format from AFP to PDF/A. Users can selectively perform multiple processes on data streams to optimize the output at piece level, not job level. The result is a recombination of output specifically prepared for web, archive or print production delivery, all with a less expensive workflow.  Print production is further optimized to capture additional savings based on production requirements and postage opportunities. The result is enhanced presentation and delivery capabilities without complicated programming and unnecessary workflow steps.

An Architecture Built for Digital Co-existence

Compart product architecture is founded on the concepts of openness, ecumenical digital co-existence and platform independence. The company is uniquely positioned as the only output management provider that delivers digital co-existence for extremely complex, heavy-duty digital production environments.

Compart has expertise in all types of data conversion plus years of experience developing its own technology. Compart further differentiates itself by supporting its own code, including PDF and PostScript. A single code base ensures identical output across all 14 operating systems, including all resource handling. A solid, established product nucleus allows continuous integrated evolution of Compart technology. This avoids the production problems caused by retrofitted products or piecemeal solutions that lack a cohesive, long-term perspective.

On a daily basis, print and data service providers must take in customer data for applications and data management activities. In corporate environments, central operations serve internal customers and lines of business that maintain their own data silos. Only data flexibility provided by the DocBridge software family can provide effective digital co-existence in mixed production and processing environments. Compart does this without requiring that users modify or rebuild entire processes. The result is maximum efficiency and output flexibility with fast job turnaround and business agility.

So Long to Silos: Digital Co-Existence and the New Document

By Carro Ford Weston

We demand more production efficiency, communications and marketing value from our documents today. We fill them with personalized messaging and images, and showcase the content with full color digital printing. We also want to take our existing but less perfect legacy documents and increase their effectiveness. Some complex variable documents are based on legacy data formats like AFP and Metacode or IJPDS for high-speed ink jet. Others may use the Office documents or the newer XPS format from Microsoft, maybe the open XSL-FO format, and there is the traditional PostScript color output. As digital color gains ground, it adds to the mix an even wider range of data formats for color output.

What does it take to make this all work together? How can service providers and others prepare without re-engineering huge chunks of their output workflow? It requires a toolset build around the idea of digital co-existence. Digital co-existence and a data-neutral output management solution offer the best approach, and it’s an approach Compart Software has helped pioneer.

A legacy of data standards

Compart has become a leader in output and data stream management, with a legacy built on years of experience helping customers handle the newer color output streams, as well as standards like AFP, IJPDS, PDF and Adobe PostScript. Since 1992, Compart product architecture has focused on growing one technological nucleus to process the market’s numerous formats and run on existing and future standards-based platforms.

Compart draws on this data-centric heritage in its work with specialized color output for the new breed of digital full color applications. To accommodate growing demand for full color, Compart recently expanded capabilities to include PPML, VIPP and VPS formats typically associated with color printers. These full color developments are part of a larger trend in the evolution of documents, as marketers realize the untapped potential in print and electronic communications.

Putting all data to good use

Given the growing complexity of variable documents, the growing use of color and expanded roles of business communications, there is no room for the limitations caused by data silos. Unfortunately, silos have been a common but ineffective presence in enterprise workflow. For a long time, IT owned transactional applications, and Marketing held data for promotional campaigns, while CRM controlled other customer content. Promotional materials may originate with graphic design programs and unstructured documents emerge from word processing applications. Transpromo applications demand a new approach that must consider all sources of formatted content. Yet they all need to be leveraged from a universal output management solution.  In other words, digital co-existence requires an integrated output management solution like DocBridge Pilot.

Compart is not constrained by data silos and has never made any distinction or limitations on how output is to be used. DocBridge Pilot breaks down data barriers so production and output delivery professionals can take the output of their existing tools and processes, while also integrating new document trends. By managing these disparate content sources, organizations can connect the output from any of their compositing sources and better leverage existing assets. Companies gain flexibility to make workflow more efficient and “content effective”, adding to the value and ROI of their technology investment. With digital co-existence, document production operations, print service providers, service bureaus and other can optimize their businesses without concerns about their source content. It’s digital co-existence for the “new document” and the old ones as well.
