2D and Remittance Processing

Fraser Ross

Fonts And Barcodes

The purpose of Fraser's column is to educate the high volume transaction industry on the value of automatic identification on their documents. Specifically, the column will focus on current barcoding techniques, whether linear on 2D, as well as emerging developments in the Automatic ID industry.

2D and Remittance Processing

Question – How much information is encoded and what size will a 2D symbol be ?

Answer – The direct mail and remittance activities of many companies represents a very labor intensive process that involves time and money, as well as delays that the use of a 2D code can reduce.

For remittance processing, much more information can be included in the 2D symbol than traditionally is included in the OCR scan line currently used. For example, a code that includes a unique identifier (account number), statement date etc. as is currently use, will take less than ½ inch square on the document. This may free space to be used by marketing messages, or sumply to reduce the overall size of the document. Reducing the size alone has a potential for huge savings in postage and handling.

For direct mail, much time is spent processing return mail. This activity often takes the form of re-keying information about the respondent. A 2D barcode containing 170 bytes of alpha-numeric data, will be encoded into a symbol approximately .7 inches square. This symbol can contain all of the information required for the return request, and much of the information that is currently re-keyed, eliminating the time and cost of that activity.

I would live to hear your ideas on how you imagine this exciting technology might help your company. Please feel free to send me your thoughts.
