Océ Partners with DocuFORM to Introduce Océ VPConvert Software
New software simplifies conversion of VIPP® data streams to industry-standard formats
September 11, 2007, Chicago, Illinois – Océ, a global leader in digital document management and delivery, announces a strategic partnership with DocuFORM GmbH, a global provider of data conversion solutions. As a result of the alliance, Océ can offer customers the benefits of Océ VPconvertTM, software designed to help them convert Variable Data Intelligent PostScript Printware (VIPP) data formats into industry-standard Postscript® language and PDF formats. With new Océ VPconvert software, customers are no longer limited to a single workflow vendor – they are free to choose workflow options independent of the origin of the data stream.
With new Océ VPconvert software, Océ extends its reputation as a leader in providing a wide range of conversion and open standard solutions that enable print providers to process virtually any data stream in all types of workflow environments – from the office to the data center to the in-house print room and commercial print shop.
The VIPP format is a- page description language and data merge application based on PostScript language and used to migrate line printer applications to PostScript output, enabling the separation of variable and static parts of printed pages to produce personalized documents. However, for years, print shops have wrestled with the challenges of manually coding VIPP commands and programming VIPP jobs for production printing and publishing applications.
Océ VPconvert software transforms native, line- and database mode VIPP print files seamlessly into PostScript and PDF formats, while maintaining all job ticket data. With this plug-and-play solution, users can directly print VIPP data streams without having to reprogram or rewrite the original VIPP application. As a result, customers who work with VIPP files no longer need to undertake expensive application redesign efforts to convert the files into another format.
"This product complements our proven range of connectivity and conversion tools for non-Océ data streams and environments," said Océ Director of Professional Services, Erik van Deurzen.
"For DocuFORM, this partnership represents a tremendous opportunity to develop new market segments by providing print professionals with a superior solution for printing VIPP applications in terms of technology and performance. I am convinced that this product and our cooperation will be well received in the market," said President and CEO of DocuFORM GmbH, Martin Denk.
Océ VPconvert software will be available in two versions. It will be offered as a standalone Microsoft® Windows® product for Océ midrange and high-volume cut-sheet printing systems. For very high-volume continuous-feed and high-performance cut-sheet printing systems, a Linux®version will be offered as an add-on module that integrates seamlessly with Océ PRISMAproductionTM workflow. Océ VPconvert software for Windows is scheduled for general availability in October 2007. Océ VPconvert software as an integrated component of Océ PRISMAproduction software is scheduled for general availability in February 2008.

New Models for KODAK VERSAMARK V-Series Printing Systems Expand Opportunities for High Volume Monochrome and Color Applications
CHICAGO, Sept. 11—Data centers and commercial printers that produce high volumes of black and white (B&W) documents now can choose from three new cost effective models of KODAK VERSAMARK V-Series Printing Systems. To easily and affordably move from B&W to full color capability, these latest VERSAMARK V-Series Systems come with low risk color options in addition to their monochrome printing capability.
Ideal for customers that produce 2 to 7 million images per month, KODAK VERSAMARK VT3250, VT3350 and VT3400 Printing Systems offer roll fed continuous inkjet (CIJ) printing that can produce 512 to 1026 monochrome images (1-up duplex letter size) per minute, depending on the model. Color capability also varies by model, producing four over one process color images (1-up duplex letter size) at 512 to 1026 images per minute.
“By providing the ability to economically move high volume monochrome work from several roll fed laser devices to a single continuous inkjet printing system, these most recent models of the VERSAMARK V-Series Systems break new ground in the black and white market,” said Ronen Cohen, Vice President, Inkjet Printing Solutions, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. “With a minimal investment, the ability to use color with the system allows printers to build their color business with little financial risk”
The new VERSAMARK V-Series Systems are designed to meet the future needs of printers that use digital print to produce monochrome documents. The new models can help those printers reduce their cost of producing B&W documents by consolidating volume to one device and then using the same device to build their color business. The new models are offered with flexible pricing that provides the lowest cost for B&W page, as well as for color pages. The V-Series Systems handle high volume variable data print applications for transactional documents, print on demand, direct mail, books, and newspapers for both B&W and color applications.
“As our customers cross the milestone of printing 90 billion images per year with KODAK Continuous Inkjet Technology in 2007, these new VERSAMARK V-Series Systems reflect our commitment to further expanding the scope of where our solutions add value in the marketplace,” said Isidre Rosello, General Manager, Transaction & Industrial Solutions, Vice President, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group, and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “The ability to provide a roll fed system for monochrome printing and lower risk color options expands continuous inkjet printing’s potential to deliver exactly the right solutions to our customers.”

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Canon U.S.A., the market share leader in digital color printing systemsi, and EFI (Nasdaq:EFII), the world leader in customer-focused digital printing innovation, today announced the newest element in the companies’ previously announced strengthened strategic alliance specifically focused on the needs of commercial print customers. The new EFI Fiery® Central powerful modular, PDF-based production workflow solution will be available in the fourth quarter of this year to Canon customers and will be demonstrated at Graph Expo (Chicago, Sept. 9-12) in Canon Booth 2400 and EFI Booth 3000. Fiery Central represents EFI’s next generation of digital print production workflow technology, leveraging the company’s legacy of customer success with the popular EFI® MicroPress, Balance™, and OneFlow® solutions as well as industry-leading Fiery digital print server technology widely used by Canon customers. Encompassing EFI’s unmatched expertise, Fiery Central enables print service providers in medium to high-volume print-on-demand environments, such as corporate reprographic departments (CRD), print for pay, and commercial printers, to increase job volume, decrease turnaround times and maximize equipment investment.
“Workflow integration, one of the Critical Six components of our imagePRESS Workflow Solutions program, is necessary in order for commercial printers to fully enjoy a profitable digital printing operation. By integrating the Fiery Central production workflow solution and EFI’s high-end production solutions with Canon’s imagePRESS C7000VP, users can better manage their end-to-end digital workflow and streamline monochrome and color production printing to further develop and enhance their digital business,” said Janet Cain, director and assistant general manager, Canon U.S.A., Inc.
“With Fiery Central, we’ve extended the Fiery power familiar to many Canon customers and now deliver an unprecedented production workflow solution that optimizes their resources and increases their production,” said Frank Mallozzi, senior vice president, worldwide marketing and sales, EFI. “Canon customers will find tremendous value in the newest addition to EFI’s robust portfolio of integrated products specifically designed to drive their increased competitiveness, efficiency and profitability.”
Readily enabling connection to multiple digital output devices of the print service providers’ choosing, Fiery Central is a powerful yet flexible solution that leverages Canon customers’ existing investment in Fiery technology and their familiarity with the Fiery workflow. Further, JDF connectivity enables a broadened range of integrated workflows. To address customers’ specific needs and expand as their workflow requirements change, Fiery Central comes in three modular components, Fiery Central Focus, Fiery Central Flow and Fiery Central Balance.
Fiery Central Focus, the base module, includes award-winning Fiery applications such as the EFI Command WorkStation® (CWS) interface, EFI Hot Folders to automate the job set-up process and reduce errors, and EFI Driver, which simplifies the process of setting up, submitting and monitoring print jobs. Customers are able to add on optional modules as their business grows.
Fiery Central Flow offers advanced digital prepress capabilities in a simple, cost-effective solution. Leveraging Fiery technology that delivers powerful capability via an intuitive interface, this module is icon-based and features a unique Visual Workflow to optimize productivity by providing job progress at-a-glance. Fiery Central Flow incorporates file conversion, preflight, spot color management, approval, routing and proofing processes into customizable workflows that can be edited and managed by users of any skill level to optimize resources and increase production. Fiery Central Flow automates manual tasks and provides print service providers with greater consistency and reliability.
Fiery Central Balance increases productivity by combining multiple devices into a “printer group” for optimized asset utilization. For complex documents, Fiery Central Balance routes jobs to one or more devices within the printer group for load balancing and maximum speed. With this module’s intelligent routing function, jobs can be split by volume, color/black and white and deployed to the best engine or combination of engines.
EFI offers several additional options across the three modules. The Compose feature eases job composition and make-ready by allowing users to visually assign and communicate page-level attributes and tabs to any printer. Impose reduces production time and errors by allowing WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) display for nearly any imposition scheme and by creating templates for simple, scalable workflows. EFI Scan improves the job process by scanning black and white and color documents to the workflow. Additional engines can be added individually to accommodate changing production requirements. Collectively and singly, these features, combined with the Fiery Central modules, help print service providers produce complex documents easier, faster and more efficiently.

Kodak Earns Two Must See ‘em and Six Worth-a-Look Recognitions at Graph Expo
CHICAGO, Sept. 10—New and previously introduced products from Kodak received a combined total of eight Must See ‘em and Worth-a-Look citations at Graph Expo 2007. Winners in the program, sponsored by the Graphic Arts Show Company and conducted independently by the PrintCom Consulting Group, were selected from almost 6,600 products and announced during the Executive Outlook Conference on September 8.
Must See ‘ems products and services represent the technology that will impact all types of printers. Products that don’t have as wide an application or broad impact on the industry yet are important for niche markets or selected groups of printers or converters are recommended to Graph Expo visitors as Worth-a-Look.
The KODAK NEXPRESS S3000 Digital Production Color Press and KODAK Web-to-Print Solutions earned Must See ‘ems. Worth-a-Look recognition went to the KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal System 5.0, KODAK INSITE Creative Workflow System 3.0, KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System-Dashboard, the KODAK FLEXCEL NX Digital Flexographic System, and the KODAK TRACELESS System for Anticounterfeiting.
The KODAK VERSAMARK D-Series Printing Systems were designated as Still Worth-a-Look, which goes to past Must See ‘ems that remain broadly important but that are now somewhat less compelling than the Encore selections.
“The prestigious Must See ‘ems serve as an unbiased guide to products and services that Graph Expo attendees should plan to learn more about,” said Jeff Hayzlett, Chief Marketing Officer, Kodak’s Graphic Communication Group. “Our eight recognitions in various categories reflect our efforts to develop products that can help our customers win wherever they play across the broad spectrum of the industry.”

New Océ PRISMAprepare Document Preparation Software Brings Cost Reductions and Time Savings to Preprint Workflow
September 10, 2007, Chicago, Illinois – Océ, a global leader in digital document management and delivery, introduces Océ PRISMAprepare TM software for robust clean-up, extensive automated layout options, soft proofing and basic preflighting. Capabilities include optimized PDF-based workflow, simplified book manufacturing, easy corrections and clean up, media flexibility and color printing features that reduce programming costs.
"PRISMAprepare unleashes the full power of Océ cut-sheet production printers and will let both in-house printroom and commercial users offer new applications and services, while saving time and reducing errors" says Eric de Goeijen, Vice President, Product Marketing, Océ North America, Inc. Corporate Printing Division.
"With PRISMAprepare, Graphic Arts users gain a comprehensive tool that can streamline and automate some of their most time-consuming manual tasks," noted Guy Broadhurst, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing, Océ North America, Inc., Commercial Printing Division. "As a result, they can complete jobs in less time and at lower cost, while maintaining high quality standards."
Océ PRISMAprepare software includes color splitting and merging to reduce printing costs. Color and black and white data and output are automatically separated and merged without costly device programming. Combined color and black and white jobs can be produced far less expensively than by traditional methods that require programming for each application. The new software also offers advanced features for merging jobs from multiple digital and analog sources, making it easier for users to build complex documents.
The PDF standard is a foundation of many Graphic Arts applications, and Océ PRISMAprepare offers three PDF workflow modes: "simple and easy" for frequent tasks, "extended" mode with access to integrated Adobe ® Acrobat ® Professional and selected plug-ins, and "expert touch" mode for specialized jobs using any third-party applications that support PDF. Users can choose the level best suited to each job’s requirements. Océ PRISMAprepare adds further value by keeping PDF files printer-independent. Customers can work with this market-standard format without being locked into proprietary workflows and workarounds, and they can continue using their existing workflow without any changes. Both Océ and non-Océ printers are supported for PDF output, securing customers’ investments and simplifying output management.
Océ PRISMAprepare software allows easy one-click book creation, with productivity-enhancing capabilities for Graphic Arts applications like training manuals, product guides and technical materials. It creates spine captions easily and flexibly and can generate duplex-printed tabs with up to three lines of text. Using pre-defined criteria, the software automatically calculates adjustments for creeping and spine captions. These laborsaving features also work with custom sizes and multiple-up impositioning. At each step, the soft proof is updated, so users have the most current version and can eliminate hard proof costs. Graphic Arts operations can maximize productivity and gain more revenue from high-margin book publishing opportunities.
Océ PRISMAprepare software fits data to a unified WYSIWYG layout, superimposing pages virtually for operators to check and correct placement of content or binder holes with accurate results. This makes it easier for users to monitor their work and make more accurate decisions about document layouts without incurring unnecessary proofing and testing time.
In addition, Océ PRISMAprepare software supports a variety of media. Default media settings with definitions of formats, paper thickness and colors simplify the process of selecting the appropriate substrate, with automated adjustment of relevant print settings.
Océ PRISMAprepare software is generally available directly from Océ.

“Xerox’s technologies continue to impress. The company consistently delivers innovative products and services that help their customers simplify their processes and grow their business,” said Bill Lamparter, president, PrintCom Consulting Group.
“Must See ‘ems” awards went to two Xerox products and solutions: the Xerox DocuColor® 8000AP Digital Press and a technology demonstration of the VIPP PRO Publisher software. The Xerox Nuvera® 100/120/144 EA Digital Production System was awarded a “Worth-a-Look” and the Xerox Nuvera 288® Digital Perfecting System was honored with an “Encore Must See ‘ems.”
The awards are selected by a panel of 16 print industry consultants and non-vendor related program participants.

Must See ‘ems:
Xerox DocuColor 8000AP Digital Press
Building on the award-winning Xerox DocuColor 8000 Digital Press platform, the DocuColor 8000AP has an "All Weights" mode that sets the press to run at 80 pages per minute, regardless of paper stock, weight or type, up to 110 lb. cover (300 gsm). A "Single Weight" mode, which varies the print speed based on the paper stock, lets print providers achieve a glossier look and feel. The DocuColor 8000AP handles a wide range of media including coated and uncoated papers, transparencies and synthetic materials. It delivers unparalleled rated speed and adapts to individual job requirements, helping customers realize additional profits while maintaining exceptional image quality and color management options on every job.
VIPP PRO Publisher software technology demonstration
The Xerox VIPP PRO Publisher is the latest addition to the Xerox FreeFlow® Variable Information Suite. The new Adobe InDesign plug-in was created to satisfy the design needs of the graphic community, while also producing premium print performance output using VIPP PRO. The Xerox VIPP PRO Publisher allows print providers to use the familiar, simple, graphic-rich InDesign software as the basis for adding variable text and images to documents such as postcards, statements and invoices, brochures and other customer communications. The Xerox VIPP PRO Publisher allows graphic designers to work in a familiar and sophisticated design program and realize performance benefits including exceptionally fast printing of VDP documents.
Worth-a-Look:
Xerox Nuvera 100/120/144 EA Digital Production System
The Xerox Nuvera EA Digital Production System delivers offset-quality images and reliability beyond the industry standard set by Xerox’s DocuTech systems. With the highest resolution of any digital monochrome system on the market – 1200 dpi and 156 lpi – the Xerox Nuvera EA DPS uses innovative technology such as cyclone cleaning to remove excess dust, producing sharper detail and more realistic pictures.
The Xerox Nuvera EA platform uses Xerox’s patented, chemically-grown EA Toner. Extremely small particles provide a smooth, consistent offset matte finish, finer lines, sharper text and halftones, and deeper solid blacks than traditional toner. Developed in Xerox research labs, EA Toner enables longer production runs, requires less energy to manufacture and generates less waste. The Nuvera EA system also offers broad substrate flexibility, including coated stock and a sheet enhancement module to automatically ensure the sheets of paper stack perfectly flat. The platform is also designed to meet the EPA’s rigorous new ENERGY STAR® requirements.
Encore Must See ‘ems:
Xerox Nuvera® 288 Digital Perfecting System
New tandem engine architecture makes the Xerox Nuvera 288® Digital Perfecting System run two-sided prints twice as fast – 288 impressions per minute – with image quality equivalent to offset printing standards, making it ideal for high-volume transactional printing and book publishing, especially scientific, technical and medical manuals. “Pass Through Programming” technology keeps one engine running even if the second is stopped, ensuring maximum productivity and uptime.
The award-winning Xerox offerings are on display in Xerox’s booth No. 1219.

Océ PRISMA Prepress Tools Expand Capabilities for Graphic Arts Market
Enhancements increase productivity across Graphic Arts workflow
September 10, 2007, Chicago, Illinois – Océ, a global leader in digital document management and delivery, announces numerous productivity enhancements for Océ PRISMA TM software modules, resulting in more effective Graphic Arts workflow. Users improve their ability to manage, convert, and direct digital print workflow, and as a result, they achieve greater productivity and cost savings.
Document Designer Advanced Increases Usability
Océ Document Designer Advanced software supports high-powered variable data printing for personalization, transpromo and other customized applications, with modules for data processing, design and broad output support. The latest enhancements improve designer productivity in variable data applications. The designer can now see values of variables actually calculated during runtime. This process can be run at either the design station or at production, giving both designer and production manager the chance to test the job without running it through production.
Other enhancements support greater usability and faster application development. The graphical user interface has been updated with new icons and colors to create a more usable design environment. The new Multiple Properties Change modifies multiple objects simultaneously, saving time and increasing accuracy. Enhanced "find and replace" lets users replace text with text or a variable, useful for replacing placeholders in imported document flows like Microsoft ® Word or Quark ® applications. In the past, designers had to look for each keyword and then insert a variable. A new Language Flows option simplifies creation of multi-language documents by making the language selectable by one data variable. Other new features in Document Designer Advanced include a DirectType ® plug-in, sheet multiplexer, PDF / variable passwords and PDF / digital signature support.
PRISMAweb Software Improves Online Service
As more businesses move to online service environments, Océ PRISMAweb eases the transition and provides long-term productivity and usability. As part of a single platform solution, Océ PRISMAweb software is tightly integrated with other PRISMA workflow components for process and output management, print management and manifesting. New PRISMAweb improvements simplify work for the print buyer through streamlined workflow and greater operational efficiency. Graphic Arts and other businesses benefit from improved print purchase approval processes. A tax calculator for regional regulations simplifies the print buying experience. Shipping Method Groups show only applicable shipping options, reducing mistakes and layers of interaction.
Limited approval groups can be established to control document content access and modification. This gains importance as Graphic Arts operations take on more applications using variable customer data output. In addition, it simplifies streamlines ordering and approval, which contributes to better profit margins. The new stock library reduces set up time for new accounts, which in turn ramps up revenue streams more quickly. It also simplifies maintenance of large stock libraries at customer sites. The tabular GUI makes it easier to see, search and sort all information at one glance. Improved asset management with a single Visual Information (VI) database for multiple templates simplifies deployment and automatically synchronizes source database and templates. This reduces work and improves data accuracy.
DPconvert for Seamless DigiPath Conversion
Océ DPconvertTM software transforms DigiPath® RDO files without altering the original job ticket information, so Graphic Arts operations can confidently transition existing RDO volume to Océ workflow and printers. The newest version supports newer Digipath v4.0 and FreeFlow Makeready® v3.0 versions and enables conversion and connection to the Océ PRISMAproductionTM server for output management, direct impositioning schemes, enhanced PDF conversion and compatibility with all resources referenced by RDO documents. Enhanced color support now extends to full color and HSV color definitions to better prepare Graphic Arts operations for the growing interest in color applications.
DocSetter Software Facilitates Workflow Productivity
Océ DocSetterTM software provides a highly competitive solution to Digipath and FreeFlow Makeready software. With the latest version, Océ DocSetter users gain interoperability capabilities for seamless workflow conversions. RDO import improvements include faster reading of TDF or TIFF files for greater productivity in mixed environments. Enhanced support for color applications assigns Océ CustomTone® custom colors, transparent overprinting, new color mode settings for Océ PRISMAproduction workflow, color separation using PostScript® and PDF imports, and import of full color PostScript and PDF files. For more efficient scanning, Océ DocSetter Version 3 allows document separation without barcodes or separation sheets, reducing consumables costs and the need to program barcodes.
