ROI for 2D Encoding Applications

By Fraser Ross

Question:
How can I show a payback for the investment in a 2D encoding application?

Answer:
This is a question that comes up regularly with all of my customers. In fact, I have compiled a list of bullet points and have detailed them in a series of mailings to many of our Client companies. One of the strongest incentives for our customers is that 2D allows them opportunities to gain a marketplace advantage by using 2D codes on customer correspondence.

Here are a few of the points covered:

  • Enhanced customer service with deeply personalized mail
  • Identify premium customers for special offers
  • Speed up remittance processing
  • Minimize remittance data entry errors

When it comes to identifying a payback for a 2D system, the lst bullet point is one that has shown increasing promise for a few of my customers, as they develop applications for billing and remittance systems.

Because a -D symbol containing 160 characters, and encoded with COPI's CodeZ Matrix product, will create a symbol that is approximately ½ inch square, the impact on the printed document is minimized. As you can see, 160 characters is enough to encode most, if not all, of the customer information included in direct mail, invoices, payment stubs and billing statements.

If none of this information ever needs to be re-keyed, you can imagine the time savings over re-keying customer information. As well, think about what the value is to your organization in the virtual elimination of errors resulting in the inevitable re-typing operation.

Watch for more of these payback suggestions in future columns.
