2D and Document Security
Question – How can a 2D code secure my document?
Answer – Just about all companies I speak to on a daily basis have a concern with their information and document security in general. You may have read a recent story in eNews about the initiatives being taken by The Department of Defense in this area. For many companies, this is a major concern, and they are always looking for ways to add a level of security to internal and customer documents.
COPI has a statement of direction to add the ability to encrypt information with a digital signature prior to passing the information to our Codes encoding subroutines.
Since I do not know your specific applications, I can explain a little about digital signatures – they allow you to ‘scramble’ information that can only be de-cryptic with the appropriate key, often known only to the issuing company. Once this scrambled information is they passed to the 2D encoder, it is secured within the 2D symbol itself. It cannot be decoded without a 2D scanner, and even when decoded, it must be decrypted using a standard, and also the public or Private key of the owner’s information.
Possible uses for this could be to secure private information such as SSN #’s on health forms, (as required by HIIPA), Verification of information for Voter registration by duplicating the printed information, in the insurance industry could be used to ‘sign’ each page of a contract or policy as part of the overall contract, and allows for the ability to cross reference the printed information on a document with that in the 2D symbol for verification.
If you have a unique application that you feel might be a candidate for this, please let me know.
