Clear Communication in Healthcare (or Anywhere)
A Little Goes A Long Way!
Recently my company underwent a change in healthcare providers and in researching the various options for me and my family I discovered some statistics that even for me ---- a long-time champion for personalized communications ---- was staggering.
The research, conducted by Watson Wyatt WorkUSA in a 2004/2005 study, started with the following statement:
?When firms communicate the value of employer benefits to employees, satisfaction is more than twice as high as when they do not.?
The basis for this statement? Interviews of 17,600 employees in 2005 who were asked how they perceived their healthcare coverage. Their responses were then analyzed against the actual healthcare coverage each employee had. The results are best demonstrated in this example of the Watson Wyatt WorkUSA matrix.

Employees who understood their benefits plans were much more likely to be satisfied with their programs!
Now look at how communication affected the turnover rate of top employees.
I point out this report to enforce the value of delivering information that is as relevant as possible to the recipient. Much of what consumers receive today is not much more than a data dump onto a piece of paper, a web page or a PDF.
Take some time to understand what would be valuable to your audience. You might be surprised at how little you need to do to help!
